There couldn’t be a worse time for trouble with the in-laws for Senate candidate Josh Mandel of Ohio. Mandel, a Republican, is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and has come out swinging for conservative values, including opposition to gay marriage and gay military members. Headline split by staff.

The article is misleading. It says, "But Mandel’s views are, apparently, unpopular with those closest to him,..." This and the headline imply that people he might be expected to have Christmas dinner with disagree with him enough to make that disagreement public. But the very next line says, "...as members of his wife’s extended family expressed..." It never tells us how closely these people are related to his wife. Are they first cousins? Second cousins? More distantly related? It also gives us no idea how often they have seen Josh. They were at his wedding. Have they spoken to him since?

So evidently, if you marry into that family, you have no right to your own views. WOW, and Ellen Ratner, is there anyone more odious? Who do THEY think they are not allowing him to have an opinion that doesn't match theirs? Slimeballs all, and Oh SO tolerant!

I read this some months ago; it is nothing new. His wife's family seems to have difficulty with anyone who disagrees with their opinion. This is illustrative of liberal's lack of tolerance for others. I personally agree with Josh Mandel and also have had a gay member of the family. There was no lack of caring for him in spite of the differences of opinion. I find this big splash in the newspaper on election day to be no more than dirty politics with a complicit newspaper. Alas!

That didn't sound like they slammed him. It just sounded like they were disappointed in him.
Very different sentiments. I honestly don't have a problem with gay marriage being recognized by the state. But it should be a state issue--not Federal. I don't think it threatens traditional marriage at all. Either way, gays can still get married in their church if the church will perform the ceremony--it just isn't recognized legally. If you stopped the church ceremonies, then you would truly be infringing on their rights. At this point, not recognizing it by law, does not infringe on their rights. But it is kind of sad that they have to go through extra legal hoops to get the same protections.

Let´s talk about the mom who regrets her children. Last week, the Daily Mail published a first-person story by Isabella Dutton, a 57 year old mother of two who declared her children to be "the biggest regret of her life." Since the Daily Mail is possibly the internet´s leading purveyor of "human interest in hating other humans" stories, it goes without saying that the article incited (and was intended to incite) a monstrous tsunami of scorn.

The execution drew protests from human rights groups concerned about the growing use of capital punishment in such cases. Headline split, source corrected.

Marton Gyongyosi, a leader of Hungary´s third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament. If the U.S. government ends up careening off the "fiscal cliff," Republicans in Congress stand to shoulder most of the blame, according to a new poll released Tuesday. A majority of Americans said in a new, post-election poll that they do not expect President Barack Obama and members of Congress to reach an agreement to avoid the effects of the fiscal cliff, the combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to take effect at the beginning of the year.

Updated 6 p.m. ET - Republicans' efforts to undo President Barack Obama's health care reform law appear to have come to an end, as House Speaker John Boehner described it Thursday as the "law of the land." In an interview with ABC News, the nation's top elected Republican seemed to indicate that Congress wouldn't engage in the type of repeated repeal votes the way it had in the past two years. Boehner's office provided a transcript of the exchange: Sawyer: A couple of other questions about the agenda now. You have said next year that you would repeal the healthcare vote.

Two republican candidates who sparked a furore with comments about rape have been lost their election bids as the Democrats look set to defend their majority in the US senate. Missouri Republican US senate candidate Todd Akin, who was criticised in August for comments about "legitimate rape," has been defeated by Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill. Until the rape comment, Mr Akin was considered the favourite to beat Ms McCaskill in a state that has trended Republican and voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. An unexpected glitch almost caused one central Pennsylvania voter to cast his ballot for the wrong candidate, highlighting concerns about voter fraud in a number of states on an already tense Election Day. The Election Protection coalition, for instance, has reported ballot scanning problems in Ohio in Cleveland, Dayton, and Toledo. "I initially selected Obama but Romney was highlighted," writes Centralpavote on YouTube, of the glitch in central Pennsylvania. "I assumed it was being picky so I de-selected Romney and tried Obama again, this time more carefully, and still got Romney."

In 2011, the journalist Mara Hvistendahl published Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men, detailing the societal effects of sex-selective abortions that target women the world over and resulted in the absence of perhaps more than 100 million girls who by now should have been born. But Hvistendahl soon learned the downside to uncovering what many believe to be a shocking trend in human rights offenses: people will want to do something about it. And so she lashed out, declaring that “anti-abortion activists

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

In the opening sequence Rod Serling informs us: "A monster had arrived in the village. On Thursday, in the midst of ongoing national debate over prospective gun control and comprehensive immigration legislation, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said that he didn’t need the approval of a majority of his own party to move forward with legislation. Referring to the so-called Hastert Rule, named after former House Speaker Denny Hastert (R-IL), which dictated that House leadership not bring up any bill for a vote without the support of a majority of the majority party, Boehner said, “Listen: It was never a rule to begin with.” Then, realizing the gravity of admitting
