Election day: The journey, the
turnaround, the moment

Hot Air, by Erika Johnsen

Original Article

I realize it may be a little late for things like this, but as we all anxiously (not that “anxiously” even begins to cover the range of my distraught emotions right now) await the results that will start rolling in and taking shape later in this long day, I’ll admit that this vid from Team R actually brought me a moment of relative calm. (Snip for video)Whatever your predictions may be, and whether you’ll consider this either a parting shot or an opening preamble, everything that Romney’s voiceover imparts is everything that’s at stake in this election.

No more Dem cocktail parties for her… The president is great when it comes to platitudes. At Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., Obama laid out the “cornerstones” of what it means to be middle class in America: a good job, a good education, a home of one’s own, a secure retirement and affordable health care. He’s less adept at outlining the policies needed to achieve those goals. (Snip) A few examples will suffice. No. 1. Because Obama speaks with such authority, it often takes several repetitions before I realize that what he’s saying is total nonsense.

Oh, just a bit of fun this evening. President Obama was talking military issues at Camp Pendleton today when he referenced his wife’s and Dr. Jill Biden’s work on behalf of military families, only he couldn’t remember one of their names. Better Jill than Michelle, I suppose:(Snip for video)And, on Jay Leno’s show last night, the president showed a great interest in deepening the nation’s ports, but not a lot of geographical aptitude. If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida —

Ending a war is a good thing. Killing civilians a bad thing. Deliberately targeting civilians is murder, and is never morally licit, even in pursuit of a good thing such as ending a war. The tens of thousands of Japanese non-combatants we killed 68 years ago this week with two nuclear bombs were not “collateral damage” of military strikes. They were the intended targets. We hoped that mass murder would bring the Japanese emperor to surrender. It worked, and American and Japanese soldiers’ lives were probably saved by it —

In 1951, a doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital removed two thin slivers of tissue from a dying woman´s cervix. Cells from that biopsy would later multiply wildly and continuously -- a feat never seen until that time -- and become the cornerstone of research for diseases ranging from polio to Parkinson´s disease. The woman´s name was Henrietta Lacks. The cells, culled from her cancerous cervical tumor, are called HeLa. "Her cells were part of research into the genes that cause cancer and those that suppress it; they helped develop drugs for treating herpes, leukemia, influenza, hemophilia, and Parkinson´s disease,"

Why Santorum Isn’t and

Byron York notes that Rick Santorum isn’t being taken seriously as the leading candidate for 2016: And yet now, no one — no one — is suggesting Santorum will be the frontrunner in 2016, should he choose to run. As far as the political handicapping goes, Santorum’s 2012 victories don’t seem to count for much. York offers some explanations for why this is so, focusing mostly on Santorum’s social conservatism. It’s certainly true that Republican donors tend to see Santorum primarily as a social conservative, and a very vocal one at that,

This week Rick Santorum returns to Iowa for the first time since last year’s presidential campaign. For Santorum, whose victory in the 2012 caucuses started an improbable run at the Republican nomination, the visit will look like a campaign swing: an appearance at a party fundraiser, a visit to the Iowa State Fair, a speech at a gathering of social conservatives. Santorum hasn’t signaled whether he will run again in 2016 and is unlikely to make any sort of formal declaration soon. But the trip will certainly send the message that he’s getting ready to run.

Eight women from the National Women’s Veterans Association of America (NWVAA) have now stepped forward to allege that San Diego mayor Bob Filner has sexually harassed them, CNN reports. The NWVAA was formed as a safe haven for military sexual-assault victims, and almost all of the women who have now stepped forward were victims of such behavior while in the military. They allege that Filner used his position as a chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee to gain access to victims of military sexual assault because they were less likely to complain. Their encounters with Filner follow

“the Cold War’s been over for 20 years” During the 2012 campaign, Obama mocked Mitt Romney’s statement that Russia was our greatest geopolitical threat. In classic Obama style, he played a linguistic slight of hand, failing to distinguish “geopolitical” threat from other threats. Obama’s canned sound bite zinger of the debate was “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years” (h/t John Ekdahl, Jr.):(Snip for video)Romney did respond with the distinction about geopolitical threats, but such nuance was not sound-bite worthy unlike Obama’s dig.

To most people, he´s the former vice president of the United States. But in Liz Cheney´s underdog campaign for the U.S. Senate from Wyoming, he´s "Liz´s dad." That´s the only reference to Dick Cheney in her biography, which briefly mentions his 1978 bid for Congress but not his two terms as arguably the most powerful No. 2 in American history. And it reflects the backseat role he´s taking in his daughter´s bid to oust three-term Sen. Michael Enzi--his former fly-fishing pal--in the 2014 Republican primary. Top campaign advisers say there are no plans for the former vice president to campaign

Let’s follow the bread crumb trail. The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) represents the bureaucracy that staffs the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS. The NTEU also represents the bureaucracy that staffs the Federal Elections Commission. The FEC. The NTEU has a political action committee — the Treasury Employees Political Action Committee. TEPAC. TEPAC routinely gives over 90% of its contributions to Democrats (94% in 2012, 98% in 2010, 96% in 2008 and so on and on and on). Now. Over the last week, there has been a lot of buzz about a supposed CIA angle to the Benghazi story. Specifically, it has been alleged that a substantial number of CIA employees were on the ground in Benghazi, carrying out a mission that involved rounding up Libyan weapons and transferring them to rebels in Syria. Further, it has been reported that the CIA has leaned on its employees not to cooperate with Congressional investigations or the media, and it has been suggested that the CIA’s role in Benghazi may be related to the al Qaeda

President Barack Obama lashed out at Russia’s treatment of its small population of sexual minorities on Tuesday, but he downplayed the massive intelligence victory over the United States that Russian strongman Vladimir Putin won by helping engineer Edward Snowden’s defection. During an appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” Obama told host Jay Leno said he has “no patience for countries that try to treat gays and lesbians and transgendered persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them.” “I have been very clear that when it comes to universal rights, when it comes to people’s basic freedoms,

WASHINGTON — U.S. officials insisted Tuesday that extraordinary security measures for nearly two dozen diplomatic posts were to thwart an “immediate, specific threat,” a claim questioned by counterterrorism experts, who note that the alert covers an incongruous set of nations from the Middle East to an island off the southern coast of Africa. Analysts don’t dispute the Obama administration’s narrative that it’s gleaned intelligence on a plot involving al Qaida’s most active affiliate, the Yemen-based Arabian Peninsula branch. That would explain why most U.S. posts in the Persian Gulf are on lockdown, including the U.

The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking

Critics of the president are convinced that Barack Obama will do lasting damage to the U.S. I doubt it. Obama came to power in the third year of large Democratic congressional majorities. In his first referendum, he lost the House and he may soon lose the Senate; in other words, there followed a somewhat normal reaction against a majority party. Obama’s popularity rating is well below 50%, despite an obsequious media and a brilliantly negative billion-dollar campaign that long ago turned Mitt Romney into a veritable elevator-using, equestrian-marrying, canine-hating monster. Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney jumped into the debate over the GOP’s future Tuesday night, warning congressional Republicans against forcing a government shutdown in their quest to stop President Barack Obama’s signature health care law. Romney addressed more than 200 donors on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee at a fundraiser for the New Hampshire Republican Party, staged just four miles from the vacation home where he has spent much of the summer with his family. The event was closed to the media, but his office released his prepared remarks.

The U.S. State Department issued a global alert about the terrorist threat allegedly posed by Al-Qaeda in Yemen. The USA announced the closure of its missions in the Middle East and Africa, and their example was followed by France, Britain, and Germany. However, this was only an attempt to justify the activities of the National Security Agency.Last Saturday, right after alerting of the terror threat civilians and BOLO complex ("be on the lookout") that includes law enforcement and federal officials, President Barack Obama went to play golf, and then celebrated his birthday at the presidential retreat at Camp David.

In a rare diplomatic snub, President Obama is canceling plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next month. The decision reflects both U.S. anger over Russia´s harboring of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden and growing frustration within the Obama administration over what it sees as Moscow´s stubbornness on other key issues, including missile defense and human rights. Obama will still attend the Group of 20 economic summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, but a top White House official said the president had no plans to hold one-on-one talks with Putin while there.

President Obama is slated to deliver a speech later this month commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in which Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Obama will deliver his speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial — the same place where King spoke 50 years ago. The Let Freedom Ring ceremony will be held Aug. 28. "It’s obviously a historic, seminal event in the country. It’s part of my generation’s formative memory and it’s a good time for us to do some reflection,"
