fta: America is the last nation in the West in which acting right is more important than living well, and conversely its economic success derives from this because a herculean work ethic is inherent in this view. The American conducts himself in a way he imagines to be good and expects to become rich as a consequence. The European seeks only to become comfortable, and imagines he can vote himself to comfort on the labours of another. ~~~
It's a good point and that American ethic is one I was raised on and believe to this day. But as the years go by, it seems more Americans and illegals immigrants have latched onto the European belief that "what is mine is mine and what is yours is mine and I will vote in progressive liberal Democrats until they make that happen." Obama has been a prime example.

One of the men accused of plotting to derail a Canadian passenger train has challenged the Canadian legal system´s authority over him. Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, told a Toronto judge that "all of these conclusions" were based on the country´s criminal code, which was "not a holy book". He and co-defendant Raed Jaser, 35, are charged with conspiracy to carry out an attack and kill people. They are accused of plotting to bomb a train between New York and Montreal. [Snip] Mr Esseghaier told a Toronto court on Wednesday "we know that this criminal code is not a holy book. It´s

The thirteen-month-old sheep is so sure he´s a pooch he fetches sticks, balls, wears a collar and a lead and even jumps up on his hind legs. Lamo, who was rescued after being hit by a car when he was just a lamb, even tries to bark along with his doggy companions. Owner, Jennifer Jones, 45, who runs Rockfield Animal Rescue in Shropshire fed Lamo milk and brought him up with her own three dogs--a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Wallace, a Jack Russell called Judy and a Labrador called Poppy. She said: "Lamo was given to me as a terrified

Scientists have described the new bird flu that has killed 22 people in China as one of the most deadly influenza strains as it spreads to Taiwan. The H7N9 flu has infected 108 people in China since it was first detected in March, according to the Geneva-based WHO. Some 6,000 Chinese tourists visit Taiwan every day, putting pressure on Taiwanese authorities to step up their screening at airports to contain the virus. The strain appears to spread more easily to humans than SARS, a virus that caused panic when it started killing people in Asia a decade ago.

One of the Boston bomb suspects was added to a terrorism database 18 months ago at the request of the CIA, officials have told US media. The FBI has already said it investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, but had found no evidence of a threat. Tsarnaev was killed during a police chase last week. His brother Dzhokhar, 19, is in custody over the bombs. Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded when two devices exploded at the Boston Marathon on 15 April. A US politician earlier confirmed the bombs were set off by remote control.

The UK Independence Party and Nigel Farage are a problem for David Cameron--but he should avoid a lurch to the Right. Every so often, Britain is shaken by a new political force that articulates a sense of frustration at the old structures, or a yearning for something new. Sometimes these movements--like the Labour Party at the start of the 20th century--turn into a momentous presence that permanently transforms the national landscape. More usually they wither and fade. To begin with, the political establishment almost always ignores these new movements. This is because they articulate heretical thoughts that cannot be

Spain’s unemployment rate reached a new record of 27.16pc in the first three months of 2013 leaving more than six million out of work in the recession hit country. The number of unemployed climbed by 237,400 people during the first quarter in the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy, according to new data released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute on Thursday. The jobless figure is the highest since Spain’s transition to democracy after the death of dictator Gen Francisco Franco and is expected to worsen before year end. The new figures were worse than predicted by economists.

Lest anybody draw the idiotic conclusion that Britain´s 0.3pc rebound in the first quarter validates "naked" austerity, three quick points. 1) There has not been much austerity in Britain, whatever the Nobel fraternity in the US likes to think. It has been moderate, well-calibrated, at the therapeutic dose of roughly 1pc of GDP a year. The Coalition has retreated in any case. Spending on "Government and other services" added 0.5pc to GDP in Q1 and explains why the UK averted a triple dip. This was old-fashioned fiscal pump-priming. It was a coincidence that this magic spending happened to save

A woman died of cervical cancer after being refused a smear test because she was too young, her husband has claimed. Becky Ryder, who would now be 26, first visited her doctor aged 24, but her requests for the simple cancer test were turned down because she was under the recommended age of 25. Instead she was diagnosed and treated for a completely different complaint. It took 15 months of repeat visits to her GP before she eventually visited another doctor who finally diagnosed her with cancer. And despite months of intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy and receiving the all-clear, the

Whenever a bomb goes off in America or Britain, some liberals’ first reaction is to wonder whether stupid white people will go crazy and attack Muslims. Even while the dust of said bomb is settling, a certain breed of heartless commentator will shift his attention from those who were hurt in the attack to those who might be driven mad with racially tinged fury upon observing the attack: that is, the allegedly Islamophobic mob, the unenlightened public, for whom every Islamo-bombing is apparently a sign that Muslims are evil and must therefore be shouted at, spat on, and possibly punched.

The BBC reports a survey showing that violent crime has fallen dramatically in the UK in recent years. I must confess that I had never heard of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the organisation behind the first UK Peace Index. It appears to be linked to a global religious organisation dedicated to the promotion of world peace, and nothing wrong with that. But the idea that Britain is now what could be called a peaceful society is wishful thinking, though it depends where you start from. For a large part of our history, extreme violence was commonplace; but

The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Marathon bombings mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev was living on taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits even as he was delving deep into the world of radical anti-American Islamism, the Herald has learned. State officials confirmed last night that Tsarnaev, slain in a raging gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter. The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said those benefits ended in 2012 when the couple stopped meeting income eligibility limits. Russell Tsarnaev’s attorney has claimed Katherine — who had converted to Islam —

Internal emails in the week following the 9-11 anniversary assault on the U.S. facility in Benghazi show the White House and State Department removed references to al Qaeda and the mention of other recent attacks in Benghazi from widely distributed talking points used to explain the incident to the public, according to a new report from five House Republican committee chairmen released Tuesday afternoon. Citing administration emails provided to the House committees, the 46-page report claims that “to protect the State Department, the Administration deliberately removed references to al-Qaeda-linked groups and previous attacks

Tamerlan Tsarnaev is telling no tales. The older of the two brothers who committed the Boston Marathon bombings was likely the one who planned the attack, but when he died in a shootout with police just days after the blasts, his thoughts and motivations vanished with him. But the brain that was home to his angry mind remains, and in this case that may mean something. Tsarnaev was an amateur boxer who won the New England Golden Gloves competition as recently as 2009 and 2010. That speaks to a young man with a healthy sense

Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat - another claim contradicted by the latest revelations. Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire

President Obama and the First Lady have come up with a crafty strategy to prevent their daughters from getting tattoos — and it banks on the girls thinking their parents are deeply uncool. “What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decide you´re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo. In the same place,’” Obama said with a smile. “And we´ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.” “And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that that somehow that´s

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Progressive publication Mother Jones has revealed yet another secretly-recorded video of a Republican saying something newsworthy. This time, it’s of GOP pollster and frequent Fox News analyst Frank Luntz remarking that Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other right-wing talk radio hosts are “problematic” for the Republican Party’s efforts to reach out to other demographics and to fight the polarization of politics. The video was recorded on an iPhone while Luntz delivered a College Republicans-sponsored speech at the University of Pennsylvania earlier this week. Most of his speech reportedly consisted of his thoughts on how words matter — for

As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

Think of it as a horizontal townhouse. Most developers hype the sky-high verticals of their new glitzy buildings, but a new condominium called The Whitman — soon to be home to former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton - has a completely different selling point: It features the longest apartments in the city. The four-unit building stretches an entire block between E. 26th and E. 27th Sts. It takes almost 30 second to walk the approximate 250-foot central corridor. "The hallway is a wow factor," said Douglas Elliman broker Dina Lewis, who shares the listing with partner Melanie Lazenby, daughter of

The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.

The leftists at Mother Jones are brandishing another secret tape. Democrats have “got every other source of news on their side. And so that is a lot of what´s driving it. If you take—Marco Rubio´s getting his ass kicked. Who´s
