Does Obama’s FEMA Deserve Applause?
Commentary Magazine, by Jonathan S. Tobin

Original Article

As I wrote earlier today, there is little doubt that part of the reason why President Obama got a bounce of some sort from Hurricane Sandy is the perception that his administration did a much better job dealing with the emergency than President Bush did during Hurricane Katrina. This was largely the result of a complacent media that was content to portray the president as the hero of the occasion after his fly through New Jersey and the seal of approval he got from Governor Chris Christie. But Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani,

Katrina was totally underwater making rescue efforts almost impossible. NY didn't have this problem they pretty much had dry ground to operate on and still failed.

I hate when I hear a republican attack Bush on Katrina when the locale did nothing in preparation as well as Bush calling the gov. to call up the nat guard and she ignored it. Katrina also had a levee problem which turned into a worse disaster. How are you supposed to rescue countless 1000,s of people with water up to your eyeballs. There's no reason relief supplies couldn't have been airdropped into Staten Island.Along with getting generators to gas stations.

A terrorist country or even Russia can look at this storm and figure out whereto attack to bring this country to it's knees. The electrical grid is absurdly outdated.

Reply 2 - Posted by: BirdsNest, 11/6/2012 6:23:17 AM     (No. 8991390)

Did I read that those huge generators brought in for the marathon are still idle? Bloomberg may as well quit now, he is hated by the poor folks of Staten Island, those people he is supposed to be helping. And as for FEMA and the Red Cross, please. One is as inept as the other. And all the driveby media has been shilling for the RC....they have raised Millions for them. May as well burn those dollars because the victims of the storm will see little of that cash.

If FEMA had done such a great job, why are people in distress in NY and NJ?

Reply 4 - Posted by: keekng, 11/6/2012 6:28:53 AM     (No. 8991398)

Based on what I see, FEMA is much less responsive now than it was during Katrina. FEMA was hampered during Katrina by a mayor and governor who were both incompetent. That does not appear to be the problem this time, after all, obama showed up in his bomber jacket, that should have fixed things.

Reply 5 - Posted by: Fiesta del sol, 11/6/2012 6:35:46 AM     (No. 8991411)

Of course FEMA has been a success. Haven't you all heard that Chris Christie got recognition from Bruce Springsteen?

Reply 6 - Posted by: Judith, 11/6/2012 6:37:15 AM     (No. 8991417)

Leading up to katrina, the Bush government pre-positioned IN NEW ORLEANS, food, water, medical supplies, equipment and personnel. They were forewarned of the storm, just not of the political party that was willing to sacrifice lives for political power.
New York suffered from a similar hurricane last year. Sort of a rehearsal for this one. They had days of warning to get ready. Seems as though the federal government (dem run)and the local government (dem run, bloomberg walks, talks and acts like a dem)dropped the ball. And I see white and black faces in the crowds of people asking for help. SOP for this government....people suffer.

Reply 7 - Posted by: jinx, 11/6/2012 7:32:24 AM     (No. 8991514)

The MSM and FOX had boots on the ground after Katrina. They stood around yelling and crying over the poor people of NO and the horrible conditions in the arena. They made up stories about death and rape. They blamed Bush for sending Katrina to wipe out the Black population. Now, after learning from Bush's experience, Obama goes to NJ and hugs a few people including Christy. He is a hero. Go figure!

Liberals have built up government as the answer to everything. By doing so agencies such as FEMA are destined to fail in the eyes of the victims. These events are called natural disasters for a reason - they are disastrous to the victims no matter how well the government responds.

The best way to endure a natural disaster is to do your own planning. Liberals have discouraged such a mindset. How hard is it to keep a couple extra cases of water on hand? A couple of hundred well placed dollars can save a lot of hardship.

Ask the people of New York that are dumpster diving for something to eat? or ask why they don't have electric power? Ask why their own mayor wouldn’t give a damn about them but wanted the PR of a marathon?

Ask the people of New Jersey who are freezing and flooded waiting for another storm to pile on? Ask about the massive oil spill that has been going on for two days without any help?

Applause, they should be prosecuted but they did make it possible for Obama to get his photo op.

Fans of Glenn Beck are complaining about what I wrote yesterday about his speech at the National Rifle Association convention, where he used a giant image of Michael Bloomberg photoshopped into what appeared to be an image of Hitler with his arm raised in a Nazi salute and wearing an armband. The Beck crowd now tells me that it wasn’t Hitler’s picture into which the New York mayor was transposed but that of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin. They say that means I owe Beck an apology along with the Anti-Defamation League and others who were also outraged by it.

The Obama administration wants to consign the Benghazi terrorist attack to the history books, but this week three State Department officials will tell Congress that the Obama administration’s version of history is false — and that the falsehoods it told the American people were willful and deliberate. One of the whistleblowers, Mark Thompson, deputy coordinator for operations in the State Department’s counterterrorism bureau, was in direct, real-time communication with people on the ground during the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Libya, before he was locked out of the room. Yet despite his firsthand knowledge of how the attack

Parse the weasel words (“the impact of certain things”) and you’ll see that Dickey is blaming one man for the precipitous decline of right-wing talk radio’s profitability: Rush Limbaugh. We have seen in the Boston bombings case how terrorists depend on a network of sympathizers. But the Russian connection remains a mystery. The press should follow up on the Russian angle to the Islamic terrorist bombers story before President Obama gets carried away with cooperating with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The assumption by the media that the former KGB officer is genuinely interested in helping the U.S. solve its Islamic terrorism problem should be subjected to scrutiny. After all, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has been identified by KGB defectors as a Russian agent.

South Carolina’s suspense-filled special election between Republican Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch comes to a close Tuesday — and it’s anyone’s guess how it will end. Will enough Republicans hold their noses and vote for Sanford, despite their misgivings about his personal conduct, to put him over the top? Or are there enough energized Democrats in the heavily GOP district to carry the day for Colbert Busch? Colbert Busch seemed to be in the driver’s seat a week ago, but the late momentum has been with Sanford. The race is now so close — a weekend survey

President Obama has single-handedly kept thousands of American workers in their jobs by spawning dozens of best-selling books about how awful he is. But every once in a while, a book comes along that it would be foolish for Obama, or anyone else, to disregard. Vali Nasr´s The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy In Retreat, is the most trenchant criticism of the Obama administration I´ve yet read. Republican lawmakers, who have spent months seeking to tie President Obama to last year’s deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, are increasingly focusing their probe on a new target: former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. The GOP-led investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, assaults that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others now centers heavily on the State Department and whether officials there deliberately misled the public about the nature of the assault. Three State Department officials are scheduled to testify before a House committee on Wednesday about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.

There was tragic incompetence, plainly, in the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attacks, and even possibly some political calculation. John McCain is going to release a bill that would dismantle cable as it´s currently constructed, Brenden Sasso at The Hill reports. The legislation would force cable companies and satellite TV providers to give consumers an option to pick and choose which channels they get. This is called "à la carte programming," and it´s long been a dream of consumers who only want a handful of channels. McCain tried to introduce similar legislation in 2006 and it went nowhere.
