Here's why Barack Obama's closing
argument seems so familiar

Investor's Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

Barack Obama, who clearly prefers campaigning to live in the White House over actually working in the White House, enjoys his last full day of campaigning today. Sadly for him, this is Obama's last campaign. But as he promised Russia's leaders during that disturbing hot mic moment in March, if reelected, he'll have a lot more flexibility to give them stuff after he's finally finished with U.S. voters and beyond anyone's reach. The Democrat has given up on Florida and North Carolina.

Given the self-fulfilling, self-importance of the national media, anything of lasting political, social or economic importance by definition must happen in or be somehow tied to Washington, D.C. This media myopia helps explain the "surprising" news stories that regularly seem to burst on the national scene when, in fact, they´ve been percolating a while in states and cities around the country. [Snip] It is admittedly no easy task to professionally monitor what´s happening locally in 50 far-flung states, especially given the contraction of resources at traditional media news-gatherers.

It would have been interesting to be a waiter at the Jefferson Hotel last evening as Democrat President Obama dined with a dozen Senate Democrats after so angrily and thoroughly denouncing said chamber and said Democrats a few hours earlier. It was a mortifying day for the Chicago machine Democrat, unaccustomed as he is to fellow party members defying their titular head. Five Democrats joined 41 Republicans against 54 other Dems to defeat expanded gun purchase background checks in a vote requiring 60 to pass. Such checks were once considered a virtual gimme for the Oval Office shotgun buff.

In one of those ceremonial pageants the Brits invented, Margaret Hilda Thatcher´s funeral unfolded this morning on the old streets of London to the sounds of the classical music she loved and Bible verses in St. Paul´s Cathedral. So great was the global appreciation for the Iron Lady who led Great Britain from 1979-90, that 2,000 dignitaries attended, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. This was the monarch´s first funeral of a former prime minister in nearly a half-century. [Snip] Alas, in a sad slap at its closest European ally, the American president sent no one from his administration.

The bloody scene looked more like Kabul or Baghdad Monday afternoon. But it was downtown Boston on a bright, shiny holiday at the finish line for the Boston Marathon. There, two trash can bombs went off, injuring scores and killing three, including an eight-year-old boy. The awful spectacle was doubly shocking to Americans because, Fort Hood aside, homeland terrorism has been largely thwarted since 9/11. To maximize the impact of their deadly cowardice, terrorists plan their deeds not for, say Mile 18 of a marathon.

Fellow Americans, it´s an honor to speak with you. I’m Jackie Walorski, and I’m a new member of Congress from Indiana’s Second District. Monday is April 15th, so hardworking families are sitting around their kitchen tables putting the finishing touches on their taxes. It’s always a stressful and time-consuming exercise, figuring out how much we have to hand over to help cover our government’s bills Unfortunately, many of the leaders you send to Washington want to make this time of year even harder.

Hi. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the President. I’m just a citizen. And as a citizen, I’m here at the White House today because I want to make a difference and I hope you will join me. My name is Francine Wheeler. My husband David is with me. We live in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. David and I have two sons. Our older son Nate, soon to be 10 years old, is a fourth grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our younger son, Ben, age six, was murdered in his first-grade classroom on December 14th.

This year, we mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War -- a time when thousands of our prisoners of war finally came home after years of starvation and hardship. A group of our POWs emerged carrying a large wooden crucifix, nearly four feet tall. They had spent months on it, secretly collecting firewood, carving it using radio wire for a crown of thorns. It was a tribute to their friend, their chaplain, their fellow prisoner who had touched their souls and saved their lives -- Father Emil Kapaun. This is an amazing story.

One of the privileges of being a journalist for so many years has been the opportunity to witness some historical events in person. Now, of course, anyone can experience events once reserved for only a few. More importantly, I have discovered over time, has been the opportunity to talk with some of the most interesting people around, to probe their minds and learn to think in ways I had never imagined. No mind more so than that of Eugene Kennedy, a former priest and professor emeritus at Loyola University, who’s an expert on history, the church and human nature.

Late as usual, President Obama unveiled his budget Wednesday for the next fiscal year, a 5.5-pound document that outlines $3,800,000,000,000 in spending, another $100 billion whacked from national defense, billions more poured into (union) construction and another $580 billion in additional taxes squeezed from the country´s wealthy because they still have some. Obama´s budget is politically DOA, of course. Tired of waiting, the House has already passed one. Last year´s Obama Opus didn´t garner one single vote from any member of either party in either chamber. But stacks of budget books make good B-roll for TV cutaways.

Despite the endorsement of President Obama, Robin Kelly easily won election Tuesday night in a special House election to represent Illinois´ troubled Second Congressional District. The sprawling urban-suburban district, containing Chicago´s ugly South Side, was formerly represented by Jesse Jackson Jr., who like a number of Illinois politicians will be residing in a federal penitentiary for a while. In fact, the last three incumbents of the Second District´s seat have moved on to prison cells, as have some recent governors. But that’s probably coincidence.

President Obama was on again Monday about gun laws, not enforcing the existing ones. But getting some new ones, any new ones so he can claim some kind of political victory after all of the promises and vows he made in the emotional days last December. But Obama wasn´t working on the senators from his own party who will actually determine the fate of these measures. That would be political leadership. No, Obama was out of town again, up in Hartford for a photo op with Connecticut legislators and some Newtown families.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

Mark Kelly, the astronaut husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on Thursday upbraided senators who voted against gun legislation by saying they voted “out of fear.” ”If that vote had been a secret ballot, I bet you it would have passed with 80 votes,” Kelly told reporters. He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

We are still speculating about virtually everything right now, but I feel as though I need to explain why I find the quick and easy conversation about Muslims being radicalized in America to be so illogical and laced with bigotry. Of course, there is a global violent jihadist movement, loosely organized, that wants to recruit young men to influence policies at home and abroad and perhaps usher in the global caliphate. That ideology motivates some Muslims to kill innocent people. But you´re allowed to be a radical Muslim in America.

After all the controversy – it was too much, and too expensive; it would be marred by protests – this morning’s funeral for Lady Thatcher in London was a splendid and memorable affair, which did her memory, and her country, proud. It was a moving, dignified and pitch-perfect occasion: unmistakably British, and a fitting send-off for the country’s greatest post-war prime minister. Big Ben fell silent – for the first time since the funeral of wartime leader Winston Churchill – and tens of thousands of admirers lined the streets to applaud Lady Thatcher’s coffin
