| New York - Adam Frye got the news when he arrived at the Javits Center on Friday to pick up his packet of material for the New York City Marathon. The race was canceled. Blame it on Sandy. "I just flew out today," said Frye, who lives in St. Paul, Minn. "I think I'm a little bit shocked. I never really thought they would cancel it. I kind of feel like they waited to cancel it until people like me had already come so we could spend our money." He was out $250 for the race fee and $300 for the flight. Mayor Michael Bloomberg bowed to pressure and called off Sunday's race after promising repeatedly

FTA: Some runners at the New Yorker Hotel in midtown - just above the blackout zone caused by the superstorm - were in the lobby crying when they learned the race was off. One person was curled up on a couch, sobbing.
There will be other races. Do they understand the city is still reeling from a natural disaster?

I've been stuck on a high floor of a highrise apartment in Manhattan w/no power from Monday night until tonight.
One of the callers to a local radio show had a wonderful suggestion for the marathon route if Bloomberg insisted on not cancelling.
Change the route to run up the stairs of all the highrise apartments that have no elevator service and deliver food and water to all the residents who are unable to go up and down stairs in the dark.
When the electricity goes out - no pumps to bring water to higher floors, but the runners would have water handed them as they ran buy.

Agree with #1. Bloomberg should have called off the New York marathon immediately so that runners from out of the area would not travel to New York, only to learn that the marathon was cancelled at the last minute. The homeless in hotels reserved for marathon runners would not have been throwing hurrican victims out as well.

Ask FEMA for your money back.
Mixed feelings. It is tempting to to say 'boo hoo, poor you' to a person who can fly in to run a marathon when others have taken big losses.
OTOH this trip might have been a big deal to Adam. And Bloomberg did mess up him up; did any other official seriously think the marathon should be run?

Heard NY'ers saying on the radio they were being kicked out of hotels because out-of-town racers had reservations.
Maybe they can stay in the hotels now.
"Crying racers" - what a bunch of dips - yes they could run up the steps and deliver food to the old people.
Saw on TV the tons of bottled water in the park along with lots of booze. So we know who would be making the money.

Stuff happens. The race should have been cancelled as soon as the storm hit. Or earlier, based upon the predictions.
But those who went to New York should get their money back from the race organizers. And then they should be grateful that they have homes to return to. Many in the hard-hit storm areas do not. And others lost their lives. Disappointed race participants should consider themselves blessed.

The common thread that runs through these situations is how the selfish, inconsiderate and ill-prepared politicians are making stupid decisions that complicate and endanger the lives of everyone they touch.
It is unfair to blame the runners. They had no way of knowing what to expect. All of them said that they understood the reason for the race being cancelled, but they were treated badly, and inconvenienced, as well. The race should have been cancelled before Sandy ever hit land. Everyone knew it would be big. So much greed for the big money that the race would bring in. The race is cancelled, but the runners are here now, and the city will still get the money out of them.
What a horrible mess, for everyone.

I think you guys are being way too hard on these runners. Many of them likely saved up, or worked to find sponsors. This is a huge race that people train all year for. To them it's the Olympics. They were told the race was on (probably also told they wouldn't get a refund of entry fee if they didn't come) and they spent their money to come out and participate. Bloomberg should have cancelled the marathon on Wednesday when it was clear the city would still be having problems by the weekend. He blew it and now all these people are out thousands of dollars. Yeah, I'd cry too.
And they can't even get a 32 oz soda thanks to more of Bloomie's "leadership" skills.

I think Adam makes a great point and it's not far fetched for Bloomy to delay canceling the marathon after a large potion of their money was spent. The media justified keeping the race on because of the money generated. I think they were also trying to fake being Americans. We come together in tragedy and people like Bloomberg don't understand that mindset. He thought he could fake it but the pushback was too much and of course, like all liberal men, he was too wimpy to stick to his guns. No moral compass and no courage of convictions.

I can't even imagine the narcissistic attitude that would compel a marathon runner to fly into a city just hit with a major disaster and expect to be treated to fun and games and a run through all 5 boroughs. My initial reaction would have been to either just eat my costs and skip the race (not flying to NYC) or, if in NYC, find out how I could help those in need and re-channel my healthy body to do good for my fellow man.
And yes, I'm not just talking the talk. When Katrina survivors arrived in my city, I was out every day getting donations and helping to provide for their needs. No way I could just sit and focus on me with so much suffering around! What is wrong with these people, to have worried about a stupid race in this place, in this time?

With all due respect to Mother Jones´s conversation-leaker-in-chief David Corn, the recordings published today of a conversation between Sen. Mitch McConnell and some consultants disparaging Ashley Judd is not news. It´s the sausage being made. We´ve got full background here, but the toplines are this: Corn got hold of a conversation apparently recorded during a presentation by consultants to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell´s reelection campaign. The consultants were opposition researchers, hired by the campaign to ferret out damaging information about actress Ashley Judd, who at one point considered running against McConnell.

As he continues guiding the Senate toward eventual consideration of proposals to curb gun violence, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) invoked his father’s suicide Tuesday as he once again pleaded with Republicans not to block legislation under consideration. During his morning remarks on the Senate floor, Reid recalled receiving a 12-gauge shotgun ordered from a Sears catalog for his 12th birthday and made reference to incidents of gun violence in his home state of Nevada, including the 2010 shooting at a Las Vegas federal building. He also noted that as a young state legislator, he sponsored a bill

A homeless man, oblivious to President Obama’s passing motorcade, took BB gun practice in the nearby woods and refused to drop his weapon when confronted by Connecticut cops, officials said today. Obama was speaking yesterday at the University of Hartford when police, stationed along the president’s route to Bradley International Airport, heard noises coming from a nearby wooded area around 5:50 p.m., said Bloomfield police Capt. Stephen Hajdasz. A detective from the neighboring town of Simsbury ordered the man — identified as 27-year-old Joseph Stravinskas — to drop what appeared to be a rifle, according to Hajdasz.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
