The incredible destruction left behind by Hurricane Sandy provides a gut check to those who want to privatize most, if not all, federal services. Even Republican presidential candidate Mitt “the myth” Romney released a statement, which seems to support the robust presence the Federal Emergency Management Agency is taking in ongoing recovery efforts in the impacted cities and towns along the Eastern seaboard. “I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters,” the statement read.
Comments: Clueless Clive demonstrates how "progressives" use a natural disaster to demonize Republicans.
It depends on whether you are Red state or Blue state. Ask the folks in Texas about FEMA. Ask the folks in Kentucky about FEMA. Where Obama has votes to buy, FEMA comes in. Where there is no advantage, forget it.
The ground reality, and I can say this with confidence, is there isn't any "love" for FEMA, American Red Cross, Andrew Cuomo, Shelly Silver, et al, in Freeport, Long Beach, Point Lookout, the Rockaways, Staten Island, etc. In fact, seeing all these politicians on the air, or, in actuality hearing them on the transister radios, is only infuriating people in these areas more.
Clive should pay me a visit on Long Island, and I will give him a ride and ask him to stand on a soap box in the middle of Long Beach, Long Island to sing his praises for FEMA and the government. He will be lucky if he is pelted only with four-day rotten tomatoes by the time he's done.
I guess Clive is unaware of Staten Island as well. Or even lower Manhattan. FEMA ain't doing the trick and the mayor the NYC is sloughing off his responsibilities. He'll blame FEMA at some point, but right now he's not doing his job while depending on them.
They. Can't. Do. It. It's not that they set out to be horrible, it's that it's an impossible task for a federal agency. It needs to be state and local. I'm so sick of these stupid columns slobbering over an organization that has proven itself not up to the task again and again.
Mitt the Myth? Your one-sided prejudice isnt showing, is it?
Did you forget Barry Soetoro, the Liar, the Marxist, the Con Man, the Phony, the Doper, the Drug Dealer, the Incompetent, the Mistake-prone idiot(My Muslim Faith, Navy Corpseman, 57 states, I'll balance the budget, I'll be transparent, and of course....Libya!).....did you forget all that? Or do you morons want our great nation to continue to suffer under this group of incompetent fools like Barack Hussein Obama, Mmm mmm mmm, and his pal Joe Bite Me and that Pig in a Pant Suit? HUH? Wake up!
It's amazing how the people of the uppa US are helpless and whining for everything from big brutha, and resorting to crime at every opportunity. Contrast this with the tsunami in Japan 2 years ago. This Sandy thing is nothing in comparison and NYC is already falling apart. So much for liberalism.
FEMA is the embodiment of incompetent, bloated, useless bureacratic disaster - without a hurricane.
Come on people - this was a Cat 1 storm and is only a problem because there was WAY too much construction directly on the coast in areas where it is very predictable that a storm will wipe out ANY structure every 20-50 years. This is like building on a railroad track and being shocked when the train comes. Just a scheduling issue, WHEN not IF.
The article is obviously biased baloney from an idiot.
I think that the storm has helped cement the sense of dependency in those areas most affected. Certainly states like NY, MD, and NJ now cling even more tightly to Big Government - confusing the federal government photo ops with the actual state and local emergency efforts. So those states are likely to go even more for Barry than before. So we can expect to see the national numbers swing more in Barry's favor but most of that would be padding the margin of victory in already very blue states.
However VA was only brushed and should stay in the Romney column. Romney should still carry all the southern swing states - VA, FL, and NC. However, the storm may cost him NH as it was only leaning in his favor. PA now looks out of play: The people in greater Phili have probably filled their collective diapers over the past several days. The Holy Priests of Climate Change have also added to the storm hysteria - and many now claim that the storm could have been avoided if we had only had more wind farms in place - and of course Barry is the wind-farm president.
Uhhh, as Rush has been pointing out today, for all the Leftist heart-flutter over Big Government, what has been the one most-praised action Obama has taken? It's -- gasp! -- waiving the FEMA screening process. That is, the big, right step by gov't has been getting gov't out of the way!
#16: The storm, more so the storm response, may hurt Obama not help him. If people [especially highly-dependent types] find "gov't help" falling badly short of what's they need, it may push down already tepid interest in voting, even turn some voters to Romney.
There have been trying times when men of foresight, faith and conviction have helped us to transcend the frailty of our human condition and to soar mightily as if we were gods. This moment in time would seem tailor-made for the appearance of such a person. The civil war in Syria, in which that country´s brutal leader, Bashar al-Assad, is beset by opponents who are just as brutal, cries out for someone to show us with clarity, charity and certainty what should be done for the good of country and the world.
Testifying about the proposed attack on Syria before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on September 4, Secretary of State John Kerry said, "With respect to Arab countries offering to bear costs and to assess, the answer is profoundly yes. They have. That offer is on the table. ... In fact, some of them have said that if the United States is prepared to go do the whole thing the way we´ve done it previously in other places, they´ll carry that cost. That´s how dedicated they are at this. That´s not in the cards, and nobody´s talking about it, but they´re
How much of a mess has Obama made of the Middle East? The following two maps tell the story, five years ago versus today. (Maps courtesy Martin Weiss, Weiss Research) As you can see, five years ago, the Middle East was mostly stable, with theocracies and military dictatorships prevalent, paid for with piles of U.S. taxpayer dough:
Appearing on ABC News´ This Week on Sunday (August 11), tycoon Donald Trump had this exchange with interviewer Jonathan Karl: Karl: But you don´t still question he [Obama] was born in the United States, do you? Trump: I have no idea. Karl: But even at this point? Trump: Well, I don´t know. Was there a birth certificate? You tell me. You know, some people say that was not his birth certificate. I´m saying I don´t know. Nobody knows. And you don´t know, either, Jonathan. You´re a smart guy, you don´t know, either. Karl: I´m pretty convinced he was born in the United States.
The economy is still puttering along, which is to say it is still not strong enough to help a lot of average Americans. (Snip) The bottom line approach is not easily embraced by many Americans. There are those of us who continue to labor under the belief that work is a means of self-expression and that a job should contribute to the wholesome growth and sustainability of family and community. I believe the majority of Americans still hold to this view, but what would happen if our society as a whole resorted to the corporate model of life, that is, pursuing it through the bottom line?
I don´t normally display lawn signs or bumper stickers during political campaigns; I usually keep my voting preferences to myself. (That´s the point of secret ballots, right?) But the November 2012 elections got me charged up to the point where I felt the urge to do something public, and since my friends already knew how I felt, I didn´t think I would be divulging any secrets by doing so.
In Part One of this series, published on Monday, I used the word “Watergate” seven times, openly comparing the scandalous Obama administration to the scandalous Nixon administration. I didn’t know the half of it. Just hours after Part One ran, we all learned the disturbing news of the rogue Justice Department wiretaps on the Associated Press. Now, even the liberals in the MSM are in an uproar, and the chief target is Attorney General Eric Holder.
"Benghazi-gate," "IRS-gate," "AP-gate" -- it would seem the intrepid investigators in the dinosaur media, in an effort to repair their shredded reputations, are finally catching up to the truths known months or years ago to those of us who get our news from the internet. (snip) Hey, dinosaurs, now that we have your attention, we have a hot tip for you: there´s one big Obama lie that´s two years old that you completely missed. In fact, you suppressed the truth.
The reason the city rose to international prominence last week quietly left Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors in a nondescript van as night fell Wednesday. The unmarked van carrying the body of suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev glided out into the busy Main South traffic and past the throng of media vehicles that had been camped out in front of the funeral home for almost a week. One of a group of vans that had moved in and out of the parking lot that night, the van belonged to the mortuary.
I found myself in a group conversation that included one of the more instantly recognizable media figures -- someone who personifies the phrase "mainstream media." Since this isn´t something that happens every day, why not make the best of it? Why not ask this VIMP (Very Important Media Person) a question or two on the topics that I frequently criticize the press for not covering? The problem was how to do so without unduly alarming the poor thing. My favorite kinds of questions might be distressing to VIMPs who never ask them, or even seem to think of them.
Many in the American Jewish community are aghast to discover that President Obama is planning to appoint former Senator Chuck Hagel to serve as Defense Secretary. If you want the skinny on how Hagel has come to be known as one of the few ferociously anti-Israel senators in the past generation, Carl from Jerusalem at Israel Matzav provides it. Meantime, all I can say is I don’t understand how anyone can possibly be surprised. (snip) Obama isn’t stupid. He picks fights he thinks he can win.
It is hard to gain perspective in the heat of an election battle, particularly when the power of persuasion is driven not by the clarity of an ideological vision, but by the billions in political advertising dollars. Perhaps that is why throughout this bitter and torturous presidential campaign, which began the moment President Barack Obama was elected in 2008, the battle has primarily been fought on economic grounds — one side arguing that the economy which tanked in 2008 was getting better, the other saying it was not, and both sides saying the government needs to reduce spending.
Some Catholic priests under contract or GS (general schedule) to the military are not allowed to offer Mass or perform weddings, baptisms, and other religious functions on military property during the government shutdown, and if they do, even on a volunteer basis, they risk being arrested, according to the general counsel for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. About 25% of the U.S. military is Catholic, some 275,000 service members, but there are only 234-active-duty priests. To fill the gap, contract or GS priests are brought in. But under the rules of the shutdown, many of those priests cannot
National Park Service rangers are being ordered to “make life difficult” during the government shutdown, according to the Washington Times. After the shutdown began, park police have been barring tourists from a number of popular attractions nationwide, including the WWII memorial. Even privately-owned landmarks, such as Mount Vernon, are being told by the National Park Service to close their doors. The Times reported: The Park Service appears to be closing streets on mere whim and caprice. The rangers even closed the parking lot at Mount Vernon, where the plantation home of George Washington is a favorite tourist destination. That was after they barred
President Obama’s approval rating has dropped to one of the lowest levels in two years. Since the government shutdown Tuesday, Obama’s approval rating has slipped 3 percentage points to 41 percent, while his disapproval went up to 52 percent, according to Gallup’s daily numbers. Reuters also polled a 41 percent approval rating in the same time period. Rasmussen Reports said he had 46 percent approval, and Fox News recorded it at 45 percent. Gallup hasn´t recorded that low an approval rating for Obama since 2011. The pollster´s surveys in September showed 44 percent approved of the president’s job. The federal
Many celebs have taken to Twitter to voice their support for ObamaCare, but “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev took it one step further on Thursday, tweeting a topless photo to promote President Obama’s healthcare coverage plan. Nina Dobrev, who stars in the tween-friendly, supernatural CW series, wrote to her more than 4 million followers on Twitter: [Tweet, pic] While she appears to be the first to drop her top, the actress, 24, is the latest in a string of high-profile stars to get the word out about the controversial healthcare program, which opened for online enrollment Tuesday. Other Hollywood regulars who
Washington - President Barack Obama says that if he owned the Washington Redskins, he would "think about changing" the team name, wading into the controversy over a football nickname that many people deem offensive to Native Americans. Obama, in an interview with The Associated Press, said team names like the Redskins offend "a sizable group of people." He said that while fans get attached to the nicknames, nostalgia may not be a good enough reason to keep them in place. "I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people
Via William Jacobson, NBC´s affiliate in Washington, D.C. reports that police ordered tourists and Vietnam war veterans who were visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to leave the memorial at one point on Friday. After one group of veterans went around the barricade, "the park ranger told them the wall was closed," NBC´s Mark Seagraves reported. "Later another group of vets showed up and moved the barricades. At that point, the memorial filled with vets and tourists. That´s when police came and moved everyone out." The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is a black granite outdoor wall on which the names of the
She’s reportedly waiting until 2014 before she starts thinking about 2016, but Hillary Clinton, according to one national poll, is your front runner for the White House — by a wide margin. And Elizabeth Warren is your fastest rising star. The former secretary of state and first lady dominated last week’s new Quinnipiac University survey, which showed her gobbling up 61 percent of support and beating any Republican challenger — be it New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul or Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz — by anywhere from 13 to 23 points. But no one in Headline corrected by Staff.
According to Politico: Ted Cruz faced a barrage of hostile questions Wednesday from angry GOP senators, who lashed the Texas tea party freshman for helping prompt a government shutdown crisis without a strategy to end it. At a closed-door lunch meeting in the Senate’s Mansfield Room, Republican after Republican pressed Cruz to explain how he would propose to end the bitter budget impasse with Democrats, according to senators who attended the meeting. A defensive Cruz had no clear plan to force an end to the shutdown — or explain how he would defund Obamacare, as he has demanded all along, sources said. The
ObamaCare is attracting lots of window shoppers, but not that many buyers. Figures from the handful of states releasing information show that only a tiny fraction of the people inquiring about President Obama’s controversial, government-mandated insurance have actually agreed to buy it since the policies went on sale Tuesday. In Connecticut — where ObamaCare was predicted to send prices for individual policies soaring — 498 residents had completed applications for coverage as of midday Thursday, out of 85,000 unique visitors to the Access Health CT Web site and another 4,000 calls to its help line, spokesman Jason Madrak said. That works out to
President Barack Obama, already embroiled in a battle over a government shutdown, jumped into another dispute on Saturday - a long-running fight over the name of the Washington Redskins NFL team. Obama said that if he owned the team, he would consider changing the name, which American Indians and others have long pilloried as racist. "I´ve got to say if I were the owner of the team and I knew that the name of my team, even if they´ve had a storied history, that was offending a sizeable group of people, I´d think about changing it," Obama said
Helen Thomas covered 10 presidents, from Eisenhower through Obama, in her time as a White House correspondent. She also went on a date with one of them, it emerged during a memorial service attended by about 500 people Saturday at the National Press Club for Thomas, who died on July 20 at age 92. As told by Suzanne Geha, Thomas’s niece, who presided, Thomas arrived in Washington in 1942, at age 22, shortly after graduating from Detroit’s Wayne State University. United Press (later UPI) hired her in 1943. While working for UP, she went on a date with John F.
Near MOUNT PISGAH, N.C. — At a spot 5,000 feet above sea level and 20 miles from the nearest town, an innkeeper decided Friday to defy the federal government and reopen his lodge. That stand lasted about two hours as National Park Service rangers blocked the entrances to the privately run Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway after owner Bruce O´Connell decided to reopen his dining room, gift shop and country store at noon Friday for lunch. The federal government had forced the inn, in a leased building on federal land, to shut down at 6 p.m. ET Thursday
