Running on fumes: Desperate motorists'
grapple for gas becomes violent
as Guns pulled and North East
suffers enormous fuel crisis

Daily Mail [UK], by Beth Stebner

Original Article

With much of the tri-state area stuck in darkness for the fourth day running following the devastation of Sandy, the fuel situation has become even more dire, with desperate survivors bickering over their place at the pump, and some even brandishing firearms to get what they need. A man in Queens pulled a pistol on another motorist yesterday, and at nearly every gas station in the region, tempers are high and patience is thin. Others have reportedly resorted to pushing and shoving, adding to the mayhem in the stricken area. While fuel is slowly making its way toward the storm-ravaged

Comments:
Next time a tropical storm is in the Atlantic or the Gulf and headed for those of us in southern climes, please don't sneer when we post its location and remind people to keep their gas tanks topped up. This is why we post that reminder.

I so surprised that our strides toward wind and solar power where not able to prevent this desperate situation! o/s
Seriously, if this crisis does not open eyes in two deep blue states of the importance of fossil fuels to our daily lives, then all is for naught. Many times God uses a crisis to show us our errors.

I'm sorry, but this hysterical, panty-wetting type of reporting just makes me laugh:

Oh horrors! I heard some have devolved into giving "mean glares" while waiting in line...

These are the same people, when given a chance for a refinery a few years back, or some offshore drilling, played the 'Not in my backyard' game. Guess they'll have to depend on those poor old rednecks to get them out of this jam.

Long Islander here. No joke, it is that bad.

And as a prior poster pointed out, many of those now complaining are the same ones who are the NIMBY types who have opposed many of the measures (such as an offshore gas & oil terminal in Long Island Sound) that would have at least mitigated the effects of this storm.

Fortunately, I was prepared. My generator was ready and tanked up. I had a couple of 5gal Jerry cans full of gasoline, plus a full 25 gallon tank of gas in my SUV before the storm hit. I'll be fine for at least 3-4 days more.

I am frustrated with those who had the means and did not take even the most basic measures beforehand (buying/making ice, filling up cars and Jerry cans with gas), but, a large part of the problem is the government itself. Not in terms of providing aid, "handouts", etc., but the bureaucracy and enviroweenies. The Coast Guard was actually preventing barges from offloading fuel these past days because of fear of "debris in the water," that restriction has only been lifted in the past 12-24 hours, then we had to wait for a waiver from the friggin' EPA for permission to sell "whole" 100% gasoline in the region, instead of the 10% Ethanol engine kiling junk that we are forced to buy normally.

I just wish the government would get out of the way.

This is the collision of two principles of truth. First, survival of the fittest guy with a gun. Second, the law of supply of demand: I have a gun and I demand your supply. This is what our entire country is going to look like if Obama is re-elected.

Thank you for the good wishes. I am far more fortunate than those a few miles to my south on LI, and those in the Rockaways, Staten Island, Breezy Point, et al., and I will be fine.

As for the issue of guns. They are definitely out there, "illegal" and otherwise. I live in a tight knit neighborhood, featuring a number of law enforcement and others, and it has been quite civil and neighborly. Also, Long Island is hardly a "conservative" bastion, but you can own (and significant number do, including yours truly) semi-auto sports utility rifles (albeit lacking evil bayonet lugs and flash suppressors).

Aside from a few towns on LI that come to mind, there will NOT be any looting, and where it does happen it will be brought to a stop quite quickly if those that choose to do so choose "unwisely."

There will always be those who do not prepare or who act in a foolhardy mannner. They will always present the biggest danger/threat when society is pulling apart at the seams. If there is any lesson I hope people get out of this it is to be prepared at all times. That means, not necessarily to the extreme, having a plan and the preparations to confront the crises you can imagine and those you would rather not. Have a fire extinguisher in case of fire, food in case of hunger, water in case of thirst, fuel as a means of power, and firearms as a means of protecting you and yours from those who would think nothing of taking all that you have away from you by any means.

Obama to New York and New Jersey: ''Drop Dead!''

If only those two Democratic strongholds were swing states, Obama would be all over the place from Brooklyn to Hackensack ordering regulations lifted, emergency supplies airlifted in, free generators full of gasoline distributed.

But no, Obama is spending this crisis making empty speeches in Wisconsin after making empty promises in New Jersey. And now the storm-stricken area is left with empty gas pumps, empty store shelves, and empty cupboards.

And does anyone doubt that the empty-headed residents of New York and New Jersey will still vote for Obama on Tuesday?

With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.
