Sewage, Bacteria, Gasoline Found in NYC Floodwater

| Water is everywhere in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy – in basements, on the streets and in transit systems – but the one place that flood water is most dangerous is in your body. ABC News chief health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser collected floodwater and drinking water in some of the areas hit hardest by Sandy and had them tested at The Ambient Group lab. The floodwater collected in Lower Manhattan tested positive for gasoline and two types of bacteria found in sewage: E. coli and coliform. “Very dangerous,” Besser said.

I am really sorry for these folks in the NE, honestly, but those of us in FL, the East coast and the Gulf Coast deal with this almost every year. We may not have the massive population at the epi center but we have the lack of food and water and the bacteria in our water and general goo in our lives with no power-- when it is hotter than the hinges of Hades. I do pray for them everyday as I know what they are going through. But, they need to put on their big girl pants and do what needs to be done.

Our house on the Mississippi river flooded in 2011. We were on one of the highest spots so we only got about a foot, but the clean up was major. Lots of those people will not have flood insurance and those who do will get to deal with the government since they are the ones who are in charge of flood insurance. Prayers for them all.

On FB an coworker got messages from her sister in NY asking her stuff like where to go to buy food, water and cleaning supplies.
Other than food - have NY'er never heard of Home Depot & Lowe's? The pictures of convoys of HD and Lowe's truck heading toward NY are on TV.
You had one week to prepare and did not buy at least 3 days worth of food?
I want to be kind; but clueless does come to mind.

This is a 'dog bites man' headline...it's the lower Hudson and the East River, fer heaven's sakes! You're lucky you don't find garbage, tires, Norway rats and dead bodies. The two rivers are cleaner than they used to be but hardly the quality the Dutch found them in say, 1600. And then the floods pick up what's on the pavements.

I can just imagine the mess that has to cleaned out of those subway and higway tunnels. They'll have to de-contaminate them for months to kill all the bacteria and God knows what else that has been living in those places. YUKE!!! Imagine cleaning out all the dead vermin that have drowned in there...even worse, cleaning out where they went when the water rose too high! Texas looks mighty sweet.....

First of all, prayers for those who evacuated and have come back to find they've lost everything as well as those who never thought the flooding would be so bad and stayed.
Looking at the many pictures of flooded streets of Manhattan, Staten Island, etc., one thing jumped out: lots full of semi-submerged yellow taxi cabs.
Seeing random flooded cars on the streets is at least partly understandable; people forced to leave on buses, didn't believe the excitable weather forecasters, etc.
But to see a whole fleet of submerged cabs makes me wonder if the owner didn't see this as an opportunity to cycle out an old fleet and depend on government assistance to buy a new one. I know if those were my company's cabs, my first priority would be to have my cabbies drive them to higher ground until the threat had passed. Even if a flood never came, better safe than sorry.
As NYC recovers from one of the worst floods (if not the worst) in its history, cabs will be in more demand than ever. And this cab company will essentially be out of business.
Just wondering...

More than 3,300 crosses, Stars of David and Islamic symbols were installed on the National Mall Thursday as peace activists created a mock cemetery to honor victims of gun violence. Organizers said the number of markers was chosen to honor the victims of gun violence who have died since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. At 11:30 a.m., religious leaders from across the country -- including some from Newtown -- began a 24-hour vigil among the grave markers, a protest aimed at lawmakers as they began to vote on a set of new gun restrictions.

Like a lot of high school sophomores, 15-year-old Ashley Baldwin found a job. Baldwin, however, wasn´t working retail or fast-food. She was doing ultrasounds, administering intravenous medicine and, ultimately, assisting in abortions performed by West Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell. Baldwin, now 22, and the mother of a two-year-old, today told a Philadelphia jury hearing Gosnell´s murder trial of her unusual hands-on medical apprenticeship. She also told of seeing at least five aborted babies moving, breathing and, in one case, "screeching," after procedures at Gosnells´ Women´s Medical Society clinic at 3801 Lancaster Ave.

The House Republican campaign chief came under fire from senior members of his own party on Thursday after he split with party leaders in criticizing a Social Security change in President Obama’s budget that Republicans have long sought. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, on Wednesday called a proposed cut to Social Security a “shocking assault on seniors,” hours after Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) had praised the president for offering the same policy change, known as chained CPI.

Massachusetts prosecutors are dropping charges against a disgraced former Newton elementary school teacher who had been accused of sexually assaulting three children, saying they’re content to let him serve out a 45-year federal child-porn sentence — and that the victims’ families didn’t want to force their children into painful trial testimony. David Ettlinger, 35, will not be prosecuted on charges he abused two children in Suffolk County and one in Middlesex County, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone said in a joint statement today. “Given the length of the defendant’s federal sentence,

In documents obtained from the IRS by the ACLU under the federal Freedom of Information Act and posted on the website Wednesday, the agency’s attorneys adopt an extremely aggressive posture toward the requirements the Fourth Amendment might place on its criminal investigators who want to read email or text messages, or use GPS location tracking. “The Fourth Amendment does not protect communications

The State Department has acknowledged that five U.S. personnel killed in Afghanistan, including 25-year-old diplomat Anne Smedinghoff, were on foot when they were attacked by a suicide bomber, and not in an armored vehicle, as officials had told bereaved relatives earlier this week. The violent deaths of U.S. diplomatic personnel — and the State Department’s changing account of how they died — harken back to the debacle in Benghazi, Libya, where Islamist extremists killed four Americans in assaults on the U.S. diplomatic compound on Sept. 11. “We are able to clarify at this point that they were

Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic front-runner in the Virginia gubernatorial race, once made an outlandish claim that would make Mitt Romney cringe. At a debate during his failed 2009 campaign, McAuliffe declared he “created over 100,000 jobs—good-paying jobs with benefits and good wages. That’s what I’ll do as governor.” A Democratic rival scoffed that McAuliffe apparently had created more jobs than Microsoft´s Bill Gates. McAuliffe’s campaign on Wednesday did not respond directly to questions about whether he stands by the 100,000 jobs—the same number Republican presidential nominee Romney struggled to defend in the 2012 campaign.

They wanna give me jail time and a fine. Fine, let me commit a real crime.´ The song also includes lyrics boasting of his friendship with President Obama, adding: ´Obama said, ´Chill you´re going to get me impeached´

WASHINGTON— Gun control supporters have won the first Senate showdown over restricting firearms, rejecting an effort by conservatives to derail a package of gun curbs before debate could even begin. The 68-31 vote gave an initial burst of momentum to efforts by President Barack Obama and lawmakers, mostly Democrats, to impose gun restrictions following the December carnage at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Gun control supporters needed 60 votes to block the conservatives. The legislation would subject more firearms buyers to federal background checks, strengthen laws against illicit gun trafficking and increase school safety aid.

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.
