| New York — A media industry group says U.S. newspaper circulation was almost unchanged in the six months ended Sept. 30. The Wall Street Journal kept its position as the No. 1 newspaper. Its average circulation grew 9.4% to 2.3 million. USA Today was second at 1.7 million, followed by The New York Times at 1.6 million. Circulation at the Times grew 40% from a year ago. More than half of the Times' circulation was for digital editions Average daily circulation in the April-September period slid 0.2% for the 613 newspapers included in the semiannual study by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Not only is the WSJ in first but their circulation is based on paid subscribers. USA Today must be counting the ones left at your hotel/motel door. There is a small charge on your hotel bill for the paper that most don't notice. That's why they can tout it as 'paid' circulation so the Audit Bureau of Circulation can count it as a legitimate subscription.
When I was in the newspaper business the price of the paper could be no less than 50% of the regular price to be counted in your circulation figures. That was over 40 years ago so it could well be different today.

If this is true, why are they laying off people? Could it be for the greedy, 1% high-earner publisher could squeeze out more profits for...himself?

That's because nobody gets the paper anymore except Dr.s/Dentist's offices, or motels/hotels, so subscriptions have bottomed out and can't go any lower unless the motels or doctors go out of business.

Well it isn't because fewer people need newspapers for their bird cage crap catchers, it's due to the totally dishonesty in reporting and their Lib agenda.
I'm tired of eating their dog food...typical reader that kills their subscriptions. Readers gone, advertising down, paper in the trash...Buh Bye!

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Wednesday questioned how the Republican Party lost the black vote after a century with the GOP - from the Civil War to the civil rights movement - during a speech at the historically black college of Howard University in Washington, D.C. “How did the party that elected the first black U.S. senator, the party that elected the first 20 African-American congressmen, how did that party become a party that now loses 95 percent of the black vote?” Paul asked.

Mystery solved. It wasn´t an elf at all, but a father and son team who live on a boat in San Francisco Bay. Tony Powell and his six-year-old son Rio have taken credit for creating the whimsical tiny front door affixed to a tree in Golden Gate Park, according to the RichmondSF blog. Tony is a skilled craftsman with the chops necessary to shape and carve wood, the blog reported. He told the reporter the inspiration for the door came from the ages. “Of course people have given recognition to the creative spirits of nature for ages.

´We´ll have to see what the Howard students thought,´ Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul shouted from an elevator Wednesday afternoon, answering MailOnline´s question about whether his foray into winning the hearts and minds of black youths was successful. Paul, a Republican darling who is already laying the groundwork for a 2016 presidential run with a coming appearance in New Hampshire, had just wrapped up a two-hour appearance at the Howard University School of Business. Howard is among the U.S. colleges classified as ´historically black,´ and the audience of approximately 300 included few white faces apart from those belonging to reporters.

President Obama´s budget this week proposed $50 billion in new infrastructure funding. Joining Obama in this fight for more federal infrastructure money will be the American Conservative Union, likely funded by the government contractors who pocket those highway tax dollars. Republicans have always been unreliable on reducing federal spending. GOP politicians will crow about bloated budgets and dangerous deficits but then load spending bills with parochial pork. Republican talk of spending cuts almost always leaves the defense budget sacrosanct, with highway spending also receiving special treatment. The Tea Party revolt has blamed this GOP inconsistency for Washington´s budgetary incontinence.

President Obama has made a big show of the fact that his fiscal year 2014 budget supposedly cuts the debt by $1.8 trillion and cuts Social Security by adopting a new way of measuring inflation. Unfortunately, according to the Congressional Budget Office, Obama’s debt savings are only half what he claims and are achieved entirely through tax hikes. Worse his supposed Social Security cut actually raises taxes on middle class families. Here are the facts: According to Obama’s own numbers, his budget would leave the American people with a $19.03 trillion debt burden by 2023.

The National Rifle Association, which had disappointed Senate gun control foes for being slow to condemn the Toomey-Manchin background check compromise, late Wednesday stepped up their attack on the deal, threatening to include the measure on their powerful report card used to grade lawmakers. Several hours after gun control fans heralded the NRA´s initial reaction to the compromise as a "positive development," the organization´s chief lobbyist, Chris Cox, issued a letter to senators warning against voting to allow debate on the gun control legislation to continue.

Politico has an interesting story out today about Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Penn., headlined, “NRA Ally Pat Toomey Pivots on Gun Control Efforts” in the print edition and “NRA Ally Pat Toomey’s Gun Control Moment” online. The story details how the senator, who is up for re-election in 2016, is co-sponsoring compromise gun control legislation with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. He is trying to ensure that he has a moderate image in his purplish battleground state. The story notes: Toomey’s alliance with Manchin this week is just the latest example of his willingness to work with Democrats.

A Mississippi car company started by Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe failed to pay more than $16,500 it owed in taxes for two months, claiming confusion about whether the company was tax exempt. GreenTech Automotive paid its taxes earlier this week, plus nearly $500 in late fees, after The Washington Examiner made an inquiry to officials in Tunica County, Mississippi, about the company´s status. That inquiry led to discussions between company executives and county officials, and an agreement that the taxes would be paid. In the run up to the governor´s race, McAuliffe had frequently touted the electric car company

The number of Washington-area residents turning to federal disability benefits is soaring as they seek to escape a weak job market in a region already dependent on government spending. The amount of money spent on disability benefits for the 4 million residents in the District and its neighboring counties has more than doubled in the past decade, from about $25.8 million in 2001 to more than $55.7 million in 2011, according to Social Security Administration data. That´s thanks to thousands more residents receiving benefits. The number of Prince George´s County residents on disability rose 63 percent to 14,930 people in 2011,

Pyongyang, North Korea -- North Korea delivered a fresh round of rhetoric Thursday with claims it had "powerful striking means" on standby for a missile launch, while Seoul and Washington speculated that the country is preparing to test a medium-range missile during upcoming national celebrations. On the streets of Pyongyang, meanwhile, North Koreans celebrated the anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un´s appointment to the country´s top party post - one in a slew of titles collected a year ago in the months after father Kim Jong Il´s death.

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Is Anthony Weiner completely delusional? Or is he out of his flipping, sex-crazed gourd? Whatever big-busted fantasies crawl around the ex-congressman’s delirious noggin, la Weiner made his next goal as clear as the skin of the wholesome college students he craved: He relishes being Mayor Weiner. Please, shut up this clown. These days, the genitally obsessed Weiner has nothing much to do, except sit in his lavish Manhattan apartment and — the inhumanity! — change the poopy diapers of his 16-month-old son, Jordan. Worse, Weiner is living under a kind of house arrest, sentenced to take extreme grief
