| Bellingham - A fragmented nation and a fragmented audience for news is making the country more difficult to govern, PBS News Hour co-anchor Jeffrey Brown said during a weekend talk at Western Washington University. A generation ago, before cable news channels and internet news sources, most people got their news from the same small collection of sources: three major TV networks and a hometown newspaper or two, Brown said. People gathered around their televisions for the assassination of a president, a walk on the moon, and other major events. "It was an age of mass media news,

Comments: Ah, the good old days when the Liberals told the whole nation what the "Truth" was, and everyone just went along with it unquestioningly. How dare people escape the Liberal plantation!

Yea, it's always easier to live under a dictator...that way no one has to or has permission to think, do or excell. We're just a bunch of sheep grazing on govt. lands stolen from productive people of the past...How wonderful it must be for Libs to believe in this claptrap moronic vision.

Can this jerk even grasp the insanity of what he is saying? He longs for old days when people just believed what the propagandists told them? Well, guess what...we are a FREE people. We don't need people like him to tell us what to think. We've had enough and to spare. He and his commie friends can go to....

He longs for the days when the mass media would just tell the public what they felt we should know.
The mass media would lie to us... because they knew better.
Now we can find more info from the internet..and it is much more difficult to lie to us.
Jeffrey Brown misses the good old days...when ABC, CBS and NBC would spoon feed us what they felt was important.

Conservatives hear 'other' views daily...the regular networks and newspapers bombard us with left-leaning news. We really can't avoid 'other' views.

Gee, could it be that modern liberalism has systematically attacked everything we hold dear as Americans? Could it be that we are finally beginning to kick back at attacks on our religion, indoctrination in public schools, free speech attacks in universities, pollution of minds in entertainment, attacks on anything patriotic, everything made political, cheating and lying excused on every level, and on and on.
Now they say we are soooooo divided!! Duhhhh? Lets hope so!

One of the things that is clear in Stanley Kurtz's book "Radical in Chief" is that the purpose of a "community organizer" is to divide people into blocks and fragments that can be manipulated. The goal is to appeal to each block, but to get them to act so that the same goal is achieved in the aggregate. Obama has worked his whole life on fragmentation and he has been assisted by useful idiots like John Stark and his friends at PBS.

The fact that the false sophistication of the coasts and beltway, as amplified by the MSM, has been rejected defies their understanding. Socialism has been recognized and rejected once again.
A fragmented nation is perfectly acceptable when socialists have the whip hand.

In the history of western liberal democracy, the duty of the press [media] is to inform without bias, to assist the electorate to make wise decisions. And, given the truth the electorate will make good and wise decisions.
Our media, being nothing but lickspittle lackies of the left is derelict in it's duty and this dereliction is treasonous.
Hopefully, there will be a day of reckoning.

Intellectual diversity threatens leftwingers. Freedom of thought and freedom of speech must be endlessly attacked. That's why the Obamunists found the video to blame for Benghazi. Hillary immediately used it to promote government thought control. In this regard, Hillary Clinton is far more dangerous than Obama. Her thought control agenda goes back to her college days.

We the people are "fragmented" because we have more than 3 sources of news. And this author is a PBS stooge. We're "fragmented" because we KNOW what's up. We KNOW what the 3 sources of news are up to. Good old Walter C. Or how about Dan Blather? Oh how I miss them. I want to be whole again...not fragmented /s off.

Nope. It was about musicians coming back to Cuba and enjoying a better life after they had escaped to America SA.nd being disillusion with the USA.

All diversity is good - but some kinds of diversity are better than others.
The speaker commits the usual Straw Man fallacy. The claim is that a diversity of news sources is responsible for fragmentation of the electorate and that the fragments are insulated/isolated from one another. People do not, he says, hear or understand the views of others. Broader horizons and more -yes, more- diversity are urgently needed.
He is, of course, talking in code. His remarks must be deciphered for those who do not know the code. When liberals talk like this they are actually saying that conservatives are ignorant and prejudiced Neanderthals who need to be double dosed with corrective programming and have their phony alternative news sources, e.g. Fox News, shut down for keeps. When liberals lament political discord and incivility, their decoded message is that people who disagree with them should sit down, shut up and listen to reason, i.e. the liberal slant.
It's code, all right. The funny thing is that liberals usually do not know they are sending coded messages, but the rest of us have learned to crack the code as soon as they start talking. Usually people who take the trouble to encode their messages are trying to keep something secret from others, but in this case, liberals seem to be trying to keep something secret from themselves. They say things without understanding what they are saying. They do not possess the key to decrypt their own messages, hence in a literal sense do not know what they are talking about.

On his Friday show, syndicated talk show host Mark Levin said that a Republican congressman is attempting to persuade one of his affiliates to remove his show from the airwaves. Although Levin would not offer the congressman’s name on air, he has been a vocal critic of various members of the House Republican leadership in the past. But Levin called the situation “fascism.” “Well, it has come to my attention that there is a Republican congressman out there who doesn’t like what I’ve been saying,” Levin said. “It has come to my attention that there is a

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Few Americans can not answer this question: who is the worst domestic mass murderer in United States’ history? Due to the United States media, most are aware that Timothy McVeigh slaughtered 168 people with a bomb in 1995. Most Americans also know the names of our three most monstrous serial killers: “The Green River Killer” Gary Ridgeway, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy. The U.S. media is again responsible for the general awareness of these men; these stories deserved — and received — national attention due to our common interest in personal safety, the rule of law

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

Here is something I don’t understand: liberals are often revealed as vile, vulgar hatemongers–not all of them, of course, but far too many–yet they never seem to pay a penalty at the polls. Why is that? Margaret Thatcher’s death has been the latest occasion for the Left to show its true stripes. All across the U.K., there have been demonstrations–vulgar at best, and violent at worst. In Bristol, lefties celebrating a Thatcher “death street party” started fires, destroyed property and battled police: This evening in Trafalgar Square, liberals have turned out for a long-planned celebration of Thatcher’s death:

With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

Newtown killer Adam Lanza’s mother considered suing Sandy Hook Elementary School after teachers turned a blind eye to beatings from his classmates, a family member claims. The relative, speaking to the Daily News, claimed that mass murderer Lanza was taunted and attacked by fellow students at his childhood alma mater. “Nancy felt fiercely protective of him,” the relative said. “She was convinced the school wasn’t doing enough to protect Adam. It made her irate.” Nancy Lanza — gunned down by her 20-year-son to start his Dec. 14 rampage — even tagged along with Adam to school

The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;

TALLAHASSEE - Picture this: You´re in the left lane of the interstate, driving a little below the speed limit, when some guy zips up behind you and swerves past you on the right. Then you notice the blue lights flashing. You´re savoring the satisfaction of seeing a trooper actually nab an aggressive driver — until you realize it´s you he´s pulling over. This could happen, if not very often, under a major transportation package expected to be taken up in the Senate Appropriations Committee next week. Introduced by Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican, the bill is a 173-page
