Don't forget the NYT's 50 days in a row front-page-coverage of the Abu Graib underwear photo scandal. The biggest nothing burger ever and their coverage put our troops in more danger. While Abu Graib was not an election cycle story as Jonah cites here, I don't feel Benghazi is an election cycle story either -- its a flat out dereliction of duty and coverup thereof.

The biased media meme has become a broken record. The news now is that it is not news. It is probably useful to keep harping on it, at least for a while - but it is no longer interesting. It has become tiresome.

Journalists and the media seem determined to destroy every last trace of their credibility and to stain the reputation of their professions forever. They have no idea, it appears, of the grievous long term damage their blatantly partisan reporting does to their organizations. Or maybe they do. Maybe they have decided to go for broke, damn the torpedoes, etc.

They cannot continue in the way much longer, however. It reminds of those police chases in which a fleeing suspect runs over the stop strips and the tires begin to go flat but they refuse to stop, riding and bumping on the rims until control is completely lost and the car comes to a stop.

It is going to take years to repair the reputation of the media, even if a serious and sincere attempt at reform is made. They have squandered the most valuable and essential thing of all, the trust of their audience. It is astonishing that more of those involved and in academia do not seem to recognize this. What use do they think they will be, what function do they imagine they will serve, when nobody trusts them any more?
