Love Among the Ruins
Vanity Fair, by Graydon Carter

Original Article

Posted By:MissMolly, 10/31/2012 5:52:32 AM

When Season Three of Downton Abbey begins airing on PBS, next month, it will do so at the absolute peak of its fevered popularity. In its brief life, the series has become a veritable institution for its American fans. And assuming that there will not be a Romney victory in November, and that federal funding for public television (and for Big Bird!) will remain in place, one can assume that Downton Abbey’s fan base will only increase. It’s safe to say that the Crawleys and their downstairs staff are far better known than the man who created them all—

Comments:
It's not politics or hurricanes, just brain candy for those in need of a mental time-out.

This is what Graydon Carter writes about when he's not writing 5000 word screeds against the evil George Bush.

Sorry, I lost interest when the series got all political (bleeding heart liberal) in the second season.

Sorry to let you down, Graydon, but Romney WILL win in November, and he WILL see that Downton Abbey and Big Bird get off public assistance and thrive on their very own merits.

Years ago a friend pointed out to me that if embryonic cell research had ANY potential, private people/companies would be investing in it. Same for these shows.

I've never watched this, but Craig Ferguson, host of "The Late, Late Show" on CBS, has seen all three seasons. He used to be a big fan, but now he mocks it. He says that season one was great, season two was "eh," and season three was "Days of Our (BLEEPIN') Lives." I believe he also referred to season three as "a steaming pile of (BLEEP!)." The BLEEP button gets a good workout on his show.

Craig's description of "Downton Abbey" sounds like the trajectory of the quality of the writing at Vanity Fair.

Awwww.....leave those of us who enjoyed Downton Abbey alone. I thought I had outgrown soap operas, but this one is a goodie. Season 3 hasn't arrived on American television yet, though, so I can't speak to Craig Ferguson's opinion (I'm not even sure who Craig Ferguson is).

Downton Abbey is by far the best thing that I have seen on television in years. It is THE ONLY show that I deliberately tune into. It is a beautiful period piece full of quality acting, staging and costuming. There is nothing on American television that even remotely compares to the quality of Downton Abbey. Nothing! Period!

I've got some news for you, Graydon. 'Big Bird' is a mega multi-millionaire and doesn't need hard-working Americans to foot the bill for Sesame Street. "Downton Abbey" is a wonderful period piece, much better than the dreck foisted upon us by our own networks, and is so popular in the UK and in the US, it also needs NO public funding to air. Good telly can survive on its own.

I have a feeling that Downton Abbey, like the big yellow bird, needs no public funding. I believe the BBC is doing just fine and would find some other way to get DA to America, like...their very own cable station (which already exists). Graydon, dahling, you're all hot air.

Me & spouse love it -- but when I found out that Shirley McClain is going to play the American mother-in-law in season 3, I almost threw up. Why does this aging rat-pack groupie have to get her mitts into everything?

Will keep some Tums next to me when the opener starts in January. Not sure we can continue.

WASHINGTON – GOP operative Andy Parrish, a former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, is expected to tell an Iowa Senate ethics panel that her 2012 presidential campaign made improper payments to its state chairman. (Snip)Gilmore said Parrish can provide the ethics panel documentary evidence that Sorenson was paid $7,500 a month to work on Bachmann’s campaign, money that was funneled to him indirectly through C&M Strategies, a Colorado-based company controlled by Bachmann fundraiser Guy Short. Among the sources of the funding, Waldron contends, was Bachmann’s independent political organization, MichelePAC, also headed by Short.

LOS ANGELES—Last year, a curious letter arrived at the suburban home of a dark-haired boy with uncommon talents. The letter was from a group of veteran magicians, and it said the young teen had been chosen for admission into an elite magic academy. "I was ecstatic," Evan Alberto, 14 years old, recalls. Evan doesn´t live in a space under the stairs, and his parents never had to protect him from a powerful wizard. (Though they do drive him to a lot of baseball games.) One of the most shared messages on Twitter was a quote from American television host and Presbyterian minister Fred Rogers: "Look for the helpers. You´ll always find people who are helping." And it proved to be true. So many of the runners continued to run across the finishing line and onwards to the Massachusetts General Hospital, in a rush to give blood, that they had to be turned away. "Due to the generosity of our donors we don´t need blood at this time," wrote the Red Cross for Eastern Massachusetts on Twitter. But the volunteers kept on coming,

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court may have an unexpectedly decisive role in helping to determine whether 11 million people who are in the U.S. illegally are allowed to remain without fear of deportation. The nine justices who are debating the merits of a law whose provisions include preventing U.S. citizens from sponsoring same-sex spouses for green cards could, depending on their ruling, eliminate or fuel a lingering controversy that some immigration proponents fear might kill efforts to overhaul the nation’s immigration system. If the Supreme Court rejects a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act,

President Obama played his strongest card this weekend in the ongoing struggle over gun control legislation when he had one of the parents of the victims of the Newtown massacre deliver his weekly radio address. Francine Wheeler, the mother of one of the 1st-graders murdered at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in December delivered an impassioned plea for Americans to join in support of what she and the White House termed the president’s “common sense” proposals. The speech was both eloquent and deeply moving and, like the effects of some of the lobbying visits to members of the House

He should be ready to go,” cast member Scott Campbell mused during the clip. Captain Sig Hansen seems less concerned, suggesting Neese lost his boating job. “I am kind of not surprised that Elliot isn’t here this year,” Hansen said.

Austin, Texas - SINCE February, the North Korean government has followed one threatening move with another. The spiral began with an underground nuclear test. Then the North declared the armistice that ended the Korean War invalid. The young dictator Kim Jong-un followed with a flurry of threats to attack civilian targets in South Korea, Japan and the United States. Earlier this week, North Korea closed the Kaesong Industrial Complex, the only facility where citizens from North and South Korea work together. And now the North is openly threatening (and visibly preparing) to fire a mobile-launcher-based Musudan missile

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

Authorities on Tuesday revealed little new information about the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, the most high-profile bombing on U.S. soil in more than a decade and a tragedy that presents a new test for President Obama. Obama, like all Americans, is standing by, waiting for answers as to who planted two bombs improvised from pressure cookers at the finish line of the storied race, and why. Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
