So what will be remembered as the biggest political event of spring 2013? Naturally the death of Lady Thatcher must be the prime candidate. But there is another that has thus far consumed only a tiny proportion of the column inches that have rightly been expended on the passing of the Iron Lady yet may have more pro found and longerlasting consequences. I speak of the rise and rise of Ukip. The Eastleigh by-election, in which Ukip sensationally beat the Conservatives to second place, has of course registered in the national political consciousness.

For what it´s worth I think the BBC has no business censoring the music charts--even if it involves a song as insensitively timed and crassly-chosen as Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead! a) we should do everything we can to discourage this idea the BBC has of itself as a branch of the Nanny State. Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office.
