National polls are meaningless at this stage in the election

| One would think that Gallup, Pew, Rasmussen, every sufficiently wealthy news organization and anyone else interested in conducting a poll would be familiar with the basics of the American electoral system. Why they all insist on continuing to waste precious ink on national polls, then, is completely mystifying. Gallup's latest poll of registered voters reports that former Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are tied nationally, 48 to 48 percent. Gallup's latest poll of likely voters, based on a complex set of assumptions about voter turnout, has Romney leading Obama by

Comments: LOL - With Romney in the lead in virtually every national poll, they suddenly want to ignore them - as if the national poll has no relation to the state-by-state polls.

National polls are meaningless because zero is losing. The press is outright members of the zero campaign. They are so in the tank! The founding fathers are rolling in their grave.

Losing means polls and Electoral College are both horrible, antiquated things. Winning means they are both products of genius, and American as apple pie.
You just have to laugh at this point.

JournOlism and JournOlists are quickly becoming meaningless....The MSM has no credibility nor integrity. Their Partisan Selective Fact Reporters, Bogus Fact Checkers, Political Activists Incognito, Biased Spin Doctors, Ruthless Character Assassins & Obama-approved Goobermint Mouth Pieces are the laughing stock of our Nation. Given their quickly identifiable transparent and small behavior, JournOlists are becoming widely known as the "UnCronkites of Our Generation." I find the hard copy of their "news," diatribes and rhetoric best suited to line the inside of bird cages.

What a concept....the idea that, for example, a 4 or 5 point difference in overall popular vote would not necessarily translate to an Electoral College win??
Mathematically possible perhaps, but HIGHLY unlikely for there to be differing overall results when there is a 2% difference or greater in the popular vote totals.
So the national vote totals continue to tell us something important about the overall state of the race. And, as noted already, some of the swing states are very similar demographically to the national voting profile, and very likely to have results that are similar.
The author of the article is blowing smoke; perhaps since he is a Ph.D, it may be pipe smoke from a faculty lounge.

I used to subscribe to this mantra, until I learned that national polls generally ARE predictive. That's why pollsters regularly do the generic ballot question, asking respondents if they will vote for the R nominee or D nominee for Congress. It does help predict what the composition of the next Congress will be.
My understanding is that an outcome such as 52-47 nationwide won't produce an electoral college outcome that differs from the popular outcome. An outcome of 50.5 to 49.5 might.
Why this should be I should probably leave to the Michael Barones of the world to explain. But I'll offer a guess that the swing states do not vary all that much from national polls. This is what makes them swing states ... and why national polls do matter.

As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

Thousands of students and law enforcement officers from across the country have packed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus to honor fallen MIT Police Officer Sean Collier who was remembered as a joy-filled, caring and compassionate man who believed kindness could change society. MIT set aside 15,000 seats at Briggs Field and every one was filled, with law enforcement officers making up two-thirds of the heartbroken audience. Collier, 26, of Somerville, was killed in the line of duty last Thursday as authorities closed in on Boston Marathon bombing suspects and brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Cambridge.

There are many unanswered questions about the motivations of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. But it is becoming increasingly clear that they were inspired by faith in a radical Islamist ideology. Dzhokhar has told investigators that, among other things, he and his brother wanted to defend Islam, while Tamerlan´s social media accounts are replete with clips by extremist clerics. As the investigation continues to unravel the seeming paradox of how two apparently normal young men could commit acts of violence, classmates, neighbors and relatives of those who knew them have expressed surprise and disbelief.

BEIJING - A confrontation involving axes, knives, at least one gun and ending with the burning down of a house left 21 people dead in China´s troubled far-west region of Xinjiang, a government spokeswoman said on Wednesday, calling it a "terrorist attack". It was the deadliest violence in the region since July 2009, when Xinjiang´s capital, Urumqi, was rocked by clashes between majority Han Chinese and minority Uighurs that killed nearly 200 people. Nine residents, six police and six ethnic Uighurs were killed in Tuesday´s drama, said Hou Hanmin, spokeswoman for the Xinjiang government.

The U.S. economy has recovered for households with net worth of $500,000 or more, a new study shows. The recession continues for almost everyone else. Wealthy households boosted their net worth by 21.2 percent in the aftermath of the recession, according to the study released today by the Pew Research Center. The rest of America lost 4.9 percent of household wealth from 2009 to 2011. Pew attributed the disparity to gains during that period in the stock and bond markets, benefiting affluent households, while the housing market’s decline hit others harder. The report underscores the nation’s growing income inequality

The Tax Policy Center has a new estimate of tax rates under President Obama´s budget in the next ten years. What won´t surprise you is that taxes are going up -- way, way up -- on the richest percentile. What might surprise you is that taxes are also going up on just about everybody else, too, despite the president´s campaign promise to not raise taxes on families making less than $200,000. Politico and other publications are making a lot of hay about these higher middle-class taxes, which mostly come from cigarette taxes and a new inflation measure called chained-CPI.

CARACAS - President Nicolas Maduro´s government declared a 90-day "emergency" in Venezuela´s electricity sector on Tuesday to speed up infrastructure work and equipment imports needed to prevent politically-contentious power cuts. Officials have blamed periodic blackouts on sabotage and excessive consumption, while critics say the sector is suffering from poor management and inefficiency following the late socialist leader Hugo Chavez´s nationalization of the sector. Maduro, who won a vote to succeed his former mentor Chavez this month, has promised a government of "efficiency" to tackle day-to-day problems like power outages plaguing the South American nation´s

Was the Boston Marathon bombing the result of an intelligence failure? That’s the question members of the House and Senate intelligence committees will be asking senior FBI officials at closed hearings on Tuesday. In particular they and other lawmakers want to know how Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s six-month trip to Russia in 2011 and 2012 could have escaped the FBI’s attention, despite the fact that he had already been investigated for possible extremist ties. Senate intelligence panel chairman Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California on Monday said she did not understand why the elder Tsarnaev brother’s visit

A bankruptcy trustee has sued Jon S. Corzine and other former MF Global executives, claiming they were “grossly negligent” in the lead up to the brokerage firm’s collapse. The action by the trustee, Louis J. Freeh, comes just weeks after he agreed to postpone the lawsuit and enter mediation with Mr. Corzine. It is unclear when those talks broke down. In the complaint filed in United States Bankruptcy Court late on Monday, Mr. Freeh took aim at Mr. Corzine, a former Democratic senator and New Jersey governor who became MF Global’s chief executive in 2010. Marathon bombings mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev was living on taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits even as he was delving deep into the world of radical anti-American Islamism, the Herald has learned. State officials confirmed last night that Tsarnaev, slain in a raging gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter. The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said those benefits ended in 2012 when the couple stopped meeting income eligibility limits. The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev is telling no tales. The older of the two brothers who committed the Boston Marathon bombings was likely the one who planned the attack, but when he died in a shootout with police just days after the blasts, his thoughts and motivations vanished with him. But the brain that was home to his angry mind remains, and in this case that may mean something. Tsarnaev was an amateur boxer who won the New England Golden Gloves competition as recently as 2009 and 2010. That speaks to a young man with a healthy sense

President Obama and the First Lady have come up with a crafty strategy to prevent their daughters from getting tattoos — and it banks on the girls thinking their parents are deeply uncool. “What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decide you´re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo. In the same place,’” Obama said with a smile. “And we´ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.” “And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that that somehow that´s

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Since the Boston bombing, much of cable news quite naturally has taken to discussing various issues surrounding terrorism and radicalization. Morning Joe on Wednesday was no exception. Joined by The Daily Beast’s Tina Brown, the panel also took a look at media portrayal — stressing that we can’t “demonize” all of Islam when we talk about radicals. “The whole family was becoming radicalized, and perhaps by their inability to fit in this culture,” Brown remarked, speaking about “home-grown” terrorism and the Tsarnaev family. As the discussion turned to what exactly “self-radicalized” means, James Peterson asserted,
