MOONACHIE, N.J.- A huge tidal surge sent water overflowing a creek and gushing out of storm drains in two northern New Jersey towns early Tuesday, filling streets with up to 5 feet of water and setting off a frantic rescue effort by boats and trucks. Gov. Chris Christie said hundreds of stranded people were rescued when the tidal surge up the Hackensack River from superstorm Sandy resulted in water overflowing a natural berm. In Moonachie, a town of 2,700 about 10 miles northwest of Manhattan, police Sgt. Tom Schmidt said water rose to 5 feet within 45 minutes,

Growing up on LI we used await for the Passaic river to flood every spring and watch as residents row down their streets in boats - houses should have never been built that close to the river and the owners couldn't give away the houses.
really sad.

SEDONA, Ariz.- Arizona Senator John McCain welcomed Vice President Joe Biden to a summit in Sedona for a weekend of policy talks with leaders from around the world. (Snip) McCain and Biden have shared a contentious political relationship since the 2008 presidential election, when they were members of opposing tickets. McCain has been a sharp critic of the Obama administration´s handling of domestic and foreign affairs, but the two men joked and flattered each other on stage. "He´s the most likable and most frustrating one I´ve dealt with, and the best vice president," McCain told the crowd.

On the night of the West fertilizer plant explosion, the American Red Cross quickly arranged to open a shelter at a local campground. Not a single person showed up. That fact is a reflection of how tight-knit the West community is, said Mark Felton, executive director of the Red Cross’ Heart of Texas chapter. Most people affected by the tragedy were quickly offered shelter by friends or family, and that’s where the majority of them remain, he said. Nancy Shelton, for example, said the bedroom ceiling of the home she leases in West fell in after the explosion.

Scott Burgess, 51, took one last look out the back door of his home in West on April 17, wondering about the embers falling in the blackness like an impromptu meteor shower. His wife, Geri, swung her purse over her shoulder and reached for her cellphone. A neighbor had warned them about the fire at the nearby fertilizer plant, and they were preparing to leave. But in an explosive flash, their view of the world would change forever. Glass ripped into Scott’s left eye, rendering it sightless and causing agonizing pain.

Michelle Obama did not walk the E!-streamed red carpet before tonight´s White House Correspondents´ Dinner — she was already at home, of course — so our first glimpse of her black Monique Lhuillier gown came later, once dinner started. And damn does she look good. This is a sexier look on her than usual, with a sheer lace panel over her decolletage and a molded bustier-style top. She very wisely chose a dress that photographs well while she´s sitting down, Schiaparelli-style, with elaborate beading along her collarbone and fitted cap sleeves that flatter her arms. WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama joked Saturday about his plans for a radical second-term evolution from a "strapping young Muslim Socialist" to retiree golfer, all with a new hairstyle like first lady Michelle´s. Obama used this year´s annual White House Correspondents´ Association dinner to poke fun at himself and some of his political adversaries, asking if it was still possible to be brought down a peg after 4 1/2 years as commander-in-chief. Entering to the rap track "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled, Obama joked about how re-election would allow him to unleash a radical agenda. But then

A president of the United States showed up to Tammy Haddad’s garden brunch. Well, sort of. As a cute joke that made everyone in the crowd stop and pay attention, Haddad told those gathered that the president was in the house. “There’s a president here,” confirmed Democratic consultant Hilary Rosen. “Okay, then everyone stand up, put up your iPhones, ladies and gentleman, for the president of the United States,” said Haddad.Considering that David Axelrod had spoken just moments before, it didn’t seem like such a stretch that the real president might show up. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Lasry’s son, Alex, worked as a $42,000-a-year special assistant reporting to senior Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, while Chelsea Clinton did a three-year stint with Lasry’s Avenue Capital investment fund.

The unfailing reverence on the American right for Ronald Reagan is understandable. He was the only exemplar of modern conservatism to win the White House, and unlike liberal icons such as Roosevelt or Johnson or Obama, he presided over an economic boom and became beloved by voters not normally drawn to his party. No wonder that Reagan, long before his death in 2004, attained mythical status in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. But that myth has become a burden for the modern GOP. It has bound Reagan’s followers on the right to policies and positions that were

Unlike you, federal government officials are immune from charges of fraud. The executive branch, vested with all of the government’s prosecutorial authority and discretion, is not going to investigate its own operatives for carrying out its own mendacious policies. That is the story of last week’s Boston Marathon bombing and the frantic efforts of the bombers, the brothers Tsarnaev, to evade capture, shoot it out with police (two of whom they killed), and — we’re now told — detonate more bombs in Times Square. The Times Square non-attack is quite interesting.

President Obama´s weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. Our top priority as a nation must be growing the economy, creating good jobs, and rebuilding opportunity for the middle class. But two months ago, Congress allowed a series of automatic budget cuts to fall across the federal government that would do the opposite. In Washington-speak, these cuts were called the “sequester.” It was a bad idea then. And as the country saw this week, it’s a bad idea now. Because of these reckless cuts, there are parents whose kids just got kicked out of Head Start programs scrambling for a solution.

President Barack Obama on Saturday called on the US Congress to end the "reckless" and "dumb" budget cuts known as the sequester, and to adopt a plan of "smarter" cuts to fuel economic growth. Obama´s weekly address comes after Congress on Friday overwhelming approved a bill putting furloughed air traffic controllers back on the job, thus undoing one of the most high-profile effects of the so-called sequestration, the $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that took effect March 1 and hit federal spending across the board. Washington - President Barack Obama warned Syria on Friday that its use of chemical weapons would be a "game changer" for the United States but made clear he was in no rush to intervene in the civil war there on the basis of evidence he said was still preliminary. Speaking a day after the disclosure of U.S. intelligence that Syria had likely used chemical weapons against its own people, Obama talked tough while calling for patience as he sought to fend off pressure for a swift response against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. WASHINGTON — Russian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the Boston bombing suspects vaguely discussed jihad with his mother, officials said Saturday, days after the U.S. government finally received details about the call. In another conversation, the mother of now-dead bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, officials said. The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family. The Democrats proposed sequestration as part of a package to secure an increase in the debt ceiling, but they never expected it to go into effect. When it did, they felt double-crossed, apparently because they thought Republicans owed it to them to fold like a cheap suit, as usual. When the Republicans figured out that sticking with the sequester was a pretty good outcome–it represented a modest, but real, restraint on federal spending, which is what Republicans always say they want–the Democrats went to Plan B. It’s a strategy they have often used before: cut back

Washington - America´s blacks voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time, reflecting a deeply polarized presidential election in which blacks strongly supported Barack Obama while many whites stayed home. Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly, according to an analysis conducted for The Associated Press.
