| Encouraged by both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, millions of Americans aren't waiting for Nov. 6 to cast their secret ballot and will almost certainly set a new national record for early voting. In 2004, when Americans voted to allow Massachusetts to keep John Kerry as senator, about 20% of the popular vote was cast before Election Day. Last time, which was the first time ever two sitting senators faced off for the White House, 31% of Americans -- about 40 million of us -- voted before Election Day. This time, according to a newly-released Gallup Poll, about 36% of Americans indicate

I'm sorry, but I'm old school...you should vote on election day, not any other. If you can make it out to vote early, you can make it on election day...
That would also cut down on voter fraud, a favorite dem function.

Why not have "early Christmas" on the day after Thanksgiving, so we don't have to do all that stressful waiting until Christmas Eve to unwrap our presents. Can we Mom and Dad? CAN WE???

The Presidential campaigns should start on a certain date, should end on a certain date, and only then should voting be carried out on a certain date.
The way it is now there is too much room for fraud, both in early voting, and though the absentee ballot process. At it is now people can vote in New York and then drive to Florida and vote again. That's why the Democrats want as loose a voting process as possible.

I'm on the road, out of state on an irregular schedule, usually from Sunday afternoon til late Friday. Just by chance I happen to be home today and will cast an early vote for Romney this afternoon. Had I not been home I'd have had to take three vacation days to insure being home next Tuesday. I suspect that many early voters have equally valid reasons for using this option. I'd like to think that my right to cast a legal vote by this method is as constitutionally guaranteed as is the vote of those who know that they can vote on the first Tuesday in November.

So do people using absentee ballots only vote on the prescribed day then mail them in and then we wait a week or two or three until they all show up and then we find out who one? Some people will be traveling or know that they will not be available on the day of the election to vote. You do realize that naval vessels do not simply pull into port so the sailors can vote, right? States run elections. If a state wants early voting so be it. Seriously, now you want the big federal government demanding how the several states run their affairs? What happened to the importance of the 10th amendment.

If your absentee ballot didn't get where it needed to be by today, your vote won't be counted until 11/17.

There's a difference between 'early' voting and absentee voting.
Of corse, there should be provisions for voting absentee, but not because it's more convenient.
Get up early go to the polls before work. Leave work go to polls stand in line in dark to vote. Make an effort to vote. That's the way it use to be.
Put this back in place and see who wins elections. It may go a long way to solving some of our problems.

Because of the distance I had to travel to work, and the hours of voting in my area, the polls were closed both going to and coming home from work on the 2010 cycle. Today I happened to go to the county building for another matter and while I was there I voted. There aren't a lot of democrats in my county.

The bloody scene looked more like Kabul or Baghdad Monday afternoon. But it was downtown Boston on a bright, shiny holiday at the finish line for the Boston Marathon. There, two trash can bombs went off, injuring scores and killing three, including an eight-year-old boy. The awful spectacle was doubly shocking to Americans because, Fort Hood aside, homeland terrorism has been largely thwarted since 9/11. To maximize the impact of their deadly cowardice, terrorists plan their deeds not for, say Mile 18 of a marathon.

Fellow Americans, it´s an honor to speak with you. I’m Jackie Walorski, and I’m a new member of Congress from Indiana’s Second District. Hi. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the President. I’m just a citizen. And as a citizen, I’m here at the White House today because I want to make a difference and I hope you will join me. My name is Francine Wheeler. My husband David is with me. We live in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. David and I have two sons. Our older son Nate, soon to be 10 years old, is a fourth grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our younger son, Ben, age six, was murdered in his first-grade classroom on December 14th.

This year, we mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War -- a time when thousands of our prisoners of war finally came home after years of starvation and hardship. A group of our POWs emerged carrying a large wooden crucifix, nearly four feet tall. They had spent months on it, secretly collecting firewood, carving it using radio wire for a crown of thorns. It was a tribute to their friend, their chaplain, their fellow prisoner who had touched their souls and saved their lives -- Father Emil Kapaun. This is an amazing story.

One of the privileges of being a journalist for so many years has been the opportunity to witness some historical events in person. Now, of course, anyone can experience events once reserved for only a few. More importantly, I have discovered over time, has been the opportunity to talk with some of the most interesting people around, to probe their minds and learn to think in ways I had never imagined. No mind more so than that of Eugene Kennedy, a former priest and professor emeritus at Loyola University, who’s an expert on history, the church and human nature.

Late as usual, President Obama unveiled his budget Wednesday for the next fiscal year, a 5.5-pound document that outlines $3,800,000,000,000 in spending, another $100 billion whacked from national defense, billions more poured into (union) construction and another $580 billion in additional taxes squeezed from the country´s wealthy because they still have some. Obama´s budget is politically DOA, of course. Tired of waiting, the House has already passed one. Last year´s Obama Opus didn´t garner one single vote from any member of either party in either chamber. But stacks of budget books make good B-roll for TV cutaways.

Despite the endorsement of President Obama, Robin Kelly easily won election Tuesday night in a special House election to represent Illinois´ troubled Second Congressional District. The sprawling urban-suburban district, containing Chicago´s ugly South Side, was formerly represented by Jesse Jackson Jr., who like a number of Illinois politicians will be residing in a federal penitentiary for a while. In fact, the last three incumbents of the Second District´s seat have moved on to prison cells, as have some recent governors. But that’s probably coincidence.

President Obama was on again Monday about gun laws, not enforcing the existing ones. But getting some new ones, any new ones so he can claim some kind of political victory after all of the promises and vows he made in the emotional days last December. But Obama wasn´t working on the senators from his own party who will actually determine the fate of these measures. That would be political leadership. No, Obama was out of town again, up in Hartford for a photo op with Connecticut legislators and some Newtown families.

It´s a good thing this column is available online, so that residents of Memphis, New Orleans and Riverside, California can learn how unsafe their city is without having to venture outside. Those are the bottom three metropolitan areas where residents said they felt least safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood. From the safety of their little work cubicles somewhere, the number gnomes over at the Gallup organization have been accumulating data on perceived human well-being as part of their polling calls on many subjects. From that data comes the 50 most and least safe cities.

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.
