| Scott Brown puts public safety over politics and this is what he gets: a headline saying he “pulls out” of a final election debate. This bizarre twist in the final full week of Brown’s Senate re-election campaign comes courtesy of the Boston Globe-led media “consortium” that apparently was the last to realize that holding a political debate just hours after Sandy ripped through Massachusetts was not a good idea. Millions were urged to stay in their homes. Schools closed. The stock market shut down. Hundreds of thousands are without power. The presidential candidates even stopped campaigning.

If there were an award for Most Constructive Shaming of the News Media, the clear winner would be Kirsten Powers, the brave Fox News pundit and Daily Beast columnist. Last Thursday, she called out the mainstream media for failing to adequately report on the ongoing trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who is charged with murdering seven newborn infants and a patient seeking an abortion. Powers’s USA Today piece provoked an instant response from many sheepish journalists. Megan McArdle of the Daily Beast acknowledged she “should have” written about the “horror Doc’s” clinic.

The day after the bodies of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were found, an anonymous email went to county officials threatening another attack if the writer’s demands were not met. My Times colleague Mark Mazzetti has a new book out that is getting a lot of attention, including some cinematic excerpts published in The Times, here and here. “The Way of the Knife” recounts the recent transformation of the Central Intelligence Agency from a traditional spying shop into more of a man-hunting paramilitary — custodian of lethal drones, sponsor of dark ops, employer of secret armies and shady contractors. As a rule, I avoid the weekly news magazines. They are filled with bad fiction disguised as “reporting,” and if I really feel the need to read mediocre prose I can always rely on the work of America’s growing horde of creative-writing professors. Nonetheless, I recently stumbled across a post in Time’s Swampland blog titled, “Obamacare Incompetence,” and succumbed to morbid curiosity. It seems that Joe Klein, a usually reliable Democrat hack, is deeply unhappy with the slow and clumsy implementation of the “Affordable Care Act.” Klein’s post focuses primarily on the implosion of Obamacare’s exchanges.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.
