| One of the more melancholy moments of the presidential campaign occurred for me in a screening room. The film was Rory Kennedy’s documentary about her mother, Ethel — the widow of Robert F. Kennedy. Much of it consisted of Kennedy-family home movies, but also film of RFK in Appalachia and in Mississippi among the pitifully emaciated poor. Kennedy brimmed with shock and indignation, with sorrow and sympathy, and was determined — you could see it on his face — to do something about it. I’ve never seen that look on Barack Obama’s face. Instead, I see a failure to embrace

The crowd adored Obama, although not as much as I think he adored himself.
I feel like that mom who said repeatedly to deaf ears, "I'm telling you that boyfriend of yours is no good for you" ...and four years later, finally: "you were right Mom". It would be easy to say smugly " I told you so," but all I feel right now is gratitude that Richard Cohen is willing to write this.

Glad to see an obvious lib come around a little, but why are they so hard-headed? He has sympathy for the poor- that's a good thing-but many are directly responsible for their condition in life. I am sure Mr. Cohen is proud of his accomplishments and takes great pleasurec in them, but why can't he apply that thought to someone in poverty? Help them find something to take like you take pride in, sir and wait! Maybe they'll find pride and pleause in their success too. What is it with the disconnect of liberals?
It is, after all, exactly what he is complaing about with Obama. Sheesh!

Just like an abused wife; abused and misused she goes back once again expecting different treatment.
So goes the life of a liberal; like the religious zealot, who will make up excuses why, despite what he sees with his own eyes, the doctrine must be preserved. Above all liberalism is not to be blamed. Everyone will be thrown under the bus before the failed ideology can be at fault.
And they wait for the next liberal savior.

Biden is just as bad,he laughed at serious stuff during his debate. These people think if they laugh and smile all the time,it's reassurance everything's under control.
I remember Bush having a grim face all the time when he was president. He was visibly shaken after 911 with the bullhorn. Obama could never fake that kind of sincerity.
What's really funny is Obama's claim that he's for the middle class in the 2nd term yet it's the middle class that'll throw him out.

Something has changed. The 'poor' in Mississippi tend to be 350-400 pounds these days. Might be related to the meat, sliced bread and Pepsi diet financed by the taxpayers. Nothing breaks the heart like seeing a grossly overweight person riding a handicap shopping cart filled with steaks, donuts and Mountain Dew…and paying with one of those funny-looking charge cards.

Kennedy had huge causes. End poverty. End the war. He challenged a sitting president over Vietnam. It could have cost him his career. It did cost him his life.
I see Cohen is demonstrating his usual grasp of history. Apparently he never heard of Sirhan Sirhan or thinks he was a conservative knuckle-dragger protesting the Vietnam war. Then he cites Adam Clayton Powell and Charlie Rangel, two of the most openly corrupt politicians in our history, as validation for his theories!
The only valid point he got was writing of zer'O in the past tense.

If, during a commercial flight, the pilot and co-pilot became unable to fly the aircraft, reasonable people would inquire if there might be a passenger with a pilot certificate. Richard Cohen would instead want to know if that person happened to be a liberal. So it is with one who chooses to announce that he will vote for Obama.

I am always amazed — amazed — when anyone has the gall to dismiss, even laugh off, the suggestion that the right to keep and bear arms is a smart and necessary provision for a free society. Human history (not to mention current events!) is too chock-full of examples of nefarious regimes violently abusing and controlling their people, and the freedoms enjoyed by American citizens are the exception, not the rule. During a committee hearing of the Oregon state senate in considering their own state package of gun-control legislation last week, one testifier reminded the assembled lawmakers of one

Andrew Breitbart has become an iconic and beloved figure on the right, so it’s hard to imagine his eponymous empire could be in danger of losing conservative support just one year after his passing. But if recent events are a harbinger of things to come, that’s at least a possibility. It all started last October, when BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins penned a controversial piece, arguing the outlet was “plagued by an unusual degree of disorganization and rampant infighting…” The report might have been easily dismissed, had it not been soon revealed that Breitbart.com’s Dana Loesch was suing Breitbart.com

And now the last of them is gone. Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Pope John Paul II—three who won the Cold War and, it isn´t too much to say, saved the West (at least for a while!)—are no longer with us. Their examples remain. They knew what they believed but also knew they had to justify their beliefs, and that one could adjust prudently to circumstances without yielding on principle. They stood firm when in power, and they took risks to get there, challenging the conventional wisdom and the respective establishments of their nations or institutions.

Frustration is taking its toll in the liberals’ war against guns. President Obama, pushing his broad gun control agenda, said we should be ashamed if we’ve forgotten the Newtown shooting so soon. The New York Times opined that Obama is being shouted down by the “gun lobby,” even though he and Biden had been crisscrossing the country “…making a forceful case for a package of laws that would reduce gun violence.” That, of course, is the media narrative on gun control. For every issue there is a narrative: a set of assumptions and boundaries of thought

Mr. Samson has found what he says are perfect replicas of the French general´s gray overcoat, he has studied Napoleon´s native Corsican tongue and he has had himself crowned emperor of France, in a cathedral yet. Is it time to give up the fight against Obamacare? That’s a question some conservative health-care experts, pundits, and — more quietly — politicians are asking. In the first years after its passage, opponents had hoped that the Supreme Court would strike down the law or that a new president would sign its repeal before most of it took effect. But the Supreme Court decided to modify a few of its provisions instead of striking it down, and President Obama was reelected. Repeal is almost certainly off the table for four years. Obamacare will continue to be implemented.

As the bipartisan Gang of Eight works to complete a comprehensive immigration reform bill, there has been a growing consensus among Senate Republicans that the bill — so far seen by no one outside the Gang — should be the subject of multiple hearings and extended consideration inside the Senate Judiciary Committee. But on Sunday there were signs that consensus does not extend to the Republicans inside the Gang. Appearing on CBS, longtime immigration reform advocate and Gang member Sen. John McCain suggested the immigration issue is so familiar to lawmakers that multiple hearings will not be necessary.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
