| In our posts about Benghazigate, we have focused on (1) the failure of the Obama administration to provide needed (and requested) security in Benghazi, (2) the Obama administration’s refusal to call for military assistance when our personnel were under deadly attack, and (3) the adminstration’s unwillingness to speak honestly about the attack in the days following it and, it appears, even until this day. Conservative activist Howard Phillips passed away on Saturday of complications of Alzheimer’s. He was 72. Phillips was born and raised the Brighton neighborhood of Boston. Rising through the ranks of the GOP, Phillips became Chairman of the Boston Republican Party in the 1960s. Singer/songwriter Richie Havens died today at the age of 72. Havens grew up in Brooklyn singing with a choir in church and with doo wop groups on street corners. He crossed the river to figure out how to make a go of it in Greenwich Village as a performer until he signed a recording contract with Verve. In 1967 Havens seemed to materialize out of nowhere with Mixed Bag, a beautiful album of folk covers and original compositions. The album was full of striking performances, but none more so than Havens’s stunning interpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman.”

In the week since modest gun control died in the Senate, those of us who don’t think guns make the country safer have been inclined to blame a few cowardly senators whose votes could have shifted the outcome. Unfortunately, the problem is bigger than that. Contrary to what then-Sen. Barack Obama told us in his inspiring breakout speech to the Democratic convention of 2004, there is a blue America and a red America. In Obama´s Audacity of Hope, he stated, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in any ugly direction."
