Win or lose, Obama faces electoral disaster

| WASHINGTON — The United States has held 56 presidential elections. In four of them the loser had more popular votes than the winner, but lost in the electoral college. Only once, in 1876, did the losing candidate (Samuel J. Tilden, a Democrat) receive an absolute majority of popular vote and still lose the election (to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes). That could happen again this year. Republican Mitt Romney currently holds a lead over President Obama according to several polls, that lead taking him to just over half of all voters in Gallup and Rasmussen polls.

Comments: Will we see the worst possible outcome? Obama losing the popular vote decisively but winning the electoral college.

Didn't Algore win the popular vote in 2000? I guess he may not have received 50% plus one vote for the absolute majority of votes.

I think (and hope) that Mitt wins both. He will win the popular vote even losing California. The red states like mine (GA) will go heavily in the numbers for him. Keep praying.

OP: The worst possible outcome would be if he won both. If Obama wins the electoral college but loses the popular vote then he won't be able to claim a mandate.

If the national polls bear out to be true and Romney wins the popular vote by a 52-47 margin, there is NO WAY Obama will win Ohio.
Ohio has always voted as the rest of the nation votes on average and I can't see them voting 6 to 7 percentage points out of phase with the rest of the country this time around.

If Obama loses, the liberals will have lost big. They had their chance with the Executive and Legislative branches to remake America and everyday Americans stood up to them in TEA party rallies all over the country and said "NO". They woke the silent, sleeping giant with their overreaching to concentrate power in their hands and it backfired badly for the Dems.

There is no way Obama will win Michigan. The only places he is popular are Detroit and Ann Arbor...the rest of the state is ready for our native son to sweep the state.

CAIRO — A court in Kuwait on Monday sentenced a prominent opposition politician to five years in prison for insulting the country’s ruler, a crime that leaders around the Persian Gulf are prosecuting with increasing frequency in an effort to stanch emboldened protest movements, or stop protests before they start. In the last six months, dissidents in Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been imprisoned on charges that included either insulting or disobeying the countries’ leaders. Bahrain’s cabinet on Sunday was reported to have endorsed a penalty of five years in prison for offending the king.

DHAKA - One night in February, Rajib Haider was set upon near his Dhaka home by five knife-wielding youths. His face was so lacerated that a relative who found the body wasn´t sure it was him until he called Haider´s cellphone and heard it ring inside a pocket. Americans think more frequently about the possibility of a terror attack against the United States than they do about the much more likely prospect that they will fall victim to violent crime or be hospitalized, according to a new study from the University of Maryland Monday. A new report published by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the university reveals that about 15 percent of those surveyed had thought about the prospect of terrorism in the United States during the preceding week, significantly more than the percentage who said

Speaking of things that make you want to die, you´ve most likely heard about the sad, horrible case of the unlicensed abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell, whose Philadelphia clinic was exposed last week as a house of horrors. Gosnell and eight of his employees are now on trial for the deaths of one female patient and seven newborns, born alive, only to be immediately murdered by Gosnell. The death penalty is on the table. Part of the hubbub involves the fact that the investigation actually began three years ago as an expose of potential prescription drug abuse

The JFK Library incident is reportedly unrelated to the explosions at the Boston Marathon. Reports indicate that it was just a fire, not an explosion. However, police are investigating video footage to see if the fire was caused by a bombing. Earlier today after the bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon police scanners reported a possible bomb at the library.

In the future, white-knuckle fliers may be able to blame those brutally bumpy flights over the Atlantic Ocean on greenhouse gases. Turbulence will be stronger and occur more often if carbon dioxide emissions double by 2050, heating up the atmosphere, according to a study by British scientists published last week in the journal Nature Climate Change. Turbulence is created by atmospheric pressure, jet streams, air around mountains, cold or warm weather fronts or thunderstorms, among other conditions. Severe turbulence is responsible for an average of 58 passenger injuries a year,

They said he would get a quick health check-up and be tagged, before being released back in the mountains.

Luke Nichter of Harker Heights, Texas, said he’s not a renter by choice. The Texas A&M University history professor’s $125,000 of student debt means he has no hope of getting a mortgage. Nichter, 35, who’s paying $1,500 a month on loans for degrees from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, is part of the most debt-laden generation to emerge from college. Two- thirds of student loans are held by people under the age of 40, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, blocking millions of them from taking advantage of the most affordable housing market on record.

The parents of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin clashed with emotional statements today, the one year anniversary of the Zimmerman´s arrest for shooting the unarmed Florida teenager. Zimmerman´s mother Gladys Zimmerman posted a two page letter online saying that her son was innocent and was arrested "solely to placate the masses." Hours later, Martin´s family and lawyer issued their own letter, stating the Gladys Zimmerman´s remarks were "disingenuous and disrespectful to the very system that is currently affording him every available opportunity to defend himself." A fisherman in Belarus was bitten to death by a beaver, and all he was doing was trying to take its picture, Sky News reports. The man spotted the beaver while fishing with friends at Lake Shestakov, but as he approached to take a photograph, the beaver bit him on the thigh. The animal managed to sever an artery, and his friends couldn´t stop the blood flow. Sky News helpfully reminds us that beavers can, of course, bite through trees. Beaver attacks are rare, though, and when they do occur, rabid beavers are generally to blame

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

On his Friday show, syndicated talk show host Mark Levin said that a Republican congressman is attempting to persuade one of his affiliates to remove his show from the airwaves. Although Levin would not offer the congressman’s name on air, he has been a vocal critic of various members of the House Republican leadership in the past. But Levin called the situation “fascism.” “Well, it has come to my attention that there is a Republican congressman out there who doesn’t like what I’ve been saying,” Levin said. “It has come to my attention that there is a

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.

The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;

Is media bias to blame for lack of Gosnell coverage? Or something far more banal? The trial of Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell would seem to have all the elements of a spectacular news story: shocking allegations, horrifying visuals, sympathetic victims. Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.

President Obama and I were college classmate at Columbia University, class of ’83. I know all too well how mindlessly liberal the students and faculty of that institution can be, and Barack Obama is certainly no exception. My time at Columbia made it crystal clear: liberals always believe they are morally superior. [Snip] It is in this cesspool of intolerance that Obama and his Marxist cronies hatched a secret plan to destroy our country. There are two things you need to know about Obama at Columbia University. First, he was Pre Law and a Political Science major- just like me.
