We want people to be safe; but it is noteworthy that the basic infrastructure - rail, bus, subway - was closed down first.

Meanwhile our TV shows NY'ers going to work without any rain.

Because of its HUGE size, the amount of heavy rain in it, a 'high' to the east and a winter storm coming in from the west both of which will hold Sandy in place dumping all that rain over heavily populated and low-lying coastal states for several days after it makes landfall, #3. If you check out the weather maps and the explanations it is obvious why this is a 'super storm'.

We've had some pretty intense rain and winds here in Nassau County on Long Island and the worst of this is another 10-12 hours away.

I'm more toward the middle of the island, roughly ~90 above sea level, but those closer to the shore (East Rockaway, Freeport, Long Beach, etc.) are in for a very hard time. And I am not talking about those with homes on the beach. Anyone south of Sunrise Highway (the highway that runs from the east to west along the South Shore of LI) is going to be in for a hard time.

I'm pretty well prepared, food, water, coolers w/ice, etc., generator is good to go, couple of extra 5gal Jerry Cans, my "evil" SUV has a full 25gal tank, and the AR is ready to go for any wannabe looter Hobgoblins (a highly unlikely contingency where I live - but no so much for those in Freeport, Long Beach, etc.)

#7 I've been within 35 miles of the landfall of three cat 3 or higher hurricanes. Forgive me for being unimpressed with this one so far.

New Yorkers, those who scoffed at Katrina victims...it's pay back time!

No heavy rain yet in New York City but we already have closures and flooding on the Major Deegan, FDR Drive and Hutch. Tunnels are closed. No ferries, buses or trains running. Bridges will close at 60 mph winds.

#8 Just heard on local radio that the south shore is being hit. Roads are flooding. People are being rescued from homes including many in Freeport, Long Island. Hope you and family are okay. Lots of resuers, no one is in immediate dangers. They are just moving them back.

Wow, #11, get a grip. New Yorkers who didn't send cash, piled water, canned goods and clothes into U-hauls and headed for the Gulf. Skilled contractor did the same, hoping to help people rebuild rebuild.

The geography (Ldotters still know what this is) of the NJ, NYC, and Long Island shorelines show that a prolonged storm surge, high tide, and storm water runoff will combine to produce flooding. This is similar to what happen to New Orleans when Katrina, combined with the coastal geography, caused flooding.

Best wishes from this Gulf Coaster to all those subject to the storm.

Better to be a sissy and evacute than be a dead hero. Don't take chances.
