After A.L.C.S. Sweep, Tigers’ Stars Went to Sleep

| DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers saw a clear path to victory just once in this lopsided World Series. In the third inning of Game 4 on Sunday, when Miguel Cabrera lifted a home run to right field, the Tigers took a one-run lead against the San Francisco Giants. Even though they were facing elimination, the best-case scenario seemed plausible. (Snip) But the Tigers’ lead disappeared in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by the Giants’ Buster Posey, and they never got it back. Cabrera batted three more times after his home run, striking out against three different pitchers.
|
Comments: Leyland summed it up after the game when he said it was "no contest". His three stars didn't pull it off, but Cabrera blamed it on the time they were off, playing intersquad games, between the regular season and the Series. (Others could argue that a team that had played tough playoffs with no break could be fatigued.)
Leyland made no excuses. He just didn't think his team played as well as the Giants.

Here is a spirited article that really captures the essence of last night's game. It was fun!
Don't know about his "diminutive" description of some of the Giant's stars, but the article is a good one. And they did "come up huge".

I have been a Giant's fan since my father took me to see them play against the NY Mets at Shea Stadium one day, many years ago when I was just a lad (Willie Mays was the Giant's CF that day). I have followed them for more than 40 years - and more closely than most anyone who has never lived in San Francisco.
That said, I am continually amazed at how many people - especially the so called "experts" at the NY Times - who try to explain what happened at the World Series this year as deficiencies in the teams that happen to draw the Giants as their opponent. And so, the Tigers "stars went to sleep" and "peaked too soon" and, of course, there was "no way to tell how the extra rest affected the Tigers". I guess that must be what also happened to the Reds. And to the Cardinals. The fact that this fate would befall 3 teams whose opponent in each case was the same team - the SF Giants - must be a coincidence. And while he is not as charismatic as Ozzie Guillen or as dynamic as Bobby Valentine, their manager, Bruce Bochy, is a fine tactician and a gifted handler of players who wins a lot of games (including 2 of the last 3 World Series).
The Giants combine great starting pitching, a dominant bullpen, exceptional defense, and timely hitting to beat teams that the "experts" consider superior.
It is not so hard to understand.

The Giants played the playoffs the way they have been playing all year. Winning. They didn't have it easy. The other teams have been great. It was a good season to remember.

...yeah, yeah, and the Rangers "went to sleep" in 2010, and the Reds "went to sleep" after game 2 this year, the the Cards "went to sleep" after game 4. I don't know if it's the East Coast sports media bias against West Coast teams, or the time zone difference, but they just don't get it. The Giants have the best pitching staff in baseball, and their committment to signing nice people has proven itself. Period. After 2010, every other team went out and imporved their pitching. Big contracts for one or two sluggers is not the formula.

The very last pitch by Romo was a snapshot of the Giant in a nutshell. Romo had thrown nothing but sliders to right handers and completely baffling them with it. The when the best hitter sits on the pitch, Romo busted a fsstball right in the wheelhouse and Cabrerra could do nothing but look at. Bottom line, Giants were scrappy, tough, resilent and not afraid to challenge anyone.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Beautiful Rosa Parks sits alone in the Montgomery, Ala., city bus she desegregated, an image endlessly replicated, most recently on an American postage stamp issued in February to commemorate Black History Month and what would have been Parks’s 100th birthday.(Snip) President Obama voiced the familiar view that she was “just wanting to get home after a long day at work” and “may not have been planning to make history.” But as Jeanne Theoharis shows in her insightful biography, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks,” this perspective obscures Parks’s lifelong activism and “fierce determination.”

Leaders of the five BRICS nations plan to create a development bank in a direct challenge to the World Bank that they accuse of Western bias. The bank would use $50 billion of seed capital shared equally between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa but would undoubtedly be dominated by China. It would be the first institution of the informal forum started in 2009 amid the economic meltdown to chart a new and more equitable world economic order.

SANFORD -- For the first time, we are hearing from the teenager believed to be the last person to talk to Trayvon Martin moments before his deadly confrontation with George Zimmerman. The teen, known only as "Witness 8," is considered to be the prosecution´s key witness, but Zimmerman´s attorneys said she lied during a deposition by the Martin family´s attorney, Benjamin Crump. A new motion filed Monday said the state knew Witness 8, said to be a girlfriend of Trayvon Martin´s from Miami, had been lying, but never came out with it.

SANFORD - Attorneys for George Zimmerman have filed a new defense witness list, and it includes more than 130 people. Among them: Trayvon Martin´s mother and father, their attorney Benjamin Crump, former Sanford police Chief Bill Lee Jr. and former State Attorney Norm Wolfinger. It also includes Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte and several other members of Trayvon´s family, including his step-brother and the Oviedo cousin with whom he´d spent the night the evening before he was fatally shot. Attorneys seldom call all the witnesses they list, still the list placed in the official court file Monday is extraordinary

An unemployed illegal immigrant who has spent the last few years playing video games reportedly used records of his playing time to apply for and receive President Obama’s “deferred action” status. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Jose Muñoz was an out-of-work 25-year-old Mexican immigrant who graduated with honors from his Sheboygan, Wisconsin high school in 2005. Since that time, Muñoz — who was brought to the United States at the age of one — has been out of school and out of work, instead spending time helping his family with household chores and countless hours playing sports

All three were staff at the Officer Candidate School, where they trained new Marine officers. A bill advancing through the Texas Legislature could drastically decrease the number of legal abortion facilities in the state. Supporters of Senate Bill 537, which would increase regulations for abortion facilities, say it will improve women’s safety. But abortion rights advocates say that the bill is a thinly veiled effort to close 37 of the state’s 42 abortion facilities, and that it would reduce women’s access to legal abortion. “I understand the suspicion, but this really is about improving health care for women getting abortions,” said the bill’s author, State Senator Bob Deuell, a Republican

The Denver Post reported that the man is 28-year-old Evan Spencer Ebel. A federal law enforcement official confirmed that identity to The Associated Press.(Snip)Ebel was driving a Cadillac in Texas that matched the description of the vehicle seen leaving the home of prisons chief Clements around the time he was shot Tuesday night.

Chicago--Chicago school officials said Thursday that they plan to close dozens of schools in a bid to improve education and tackle a $1 billion deficit. The move would shutter 61 school buildings, including 53 underused schools and one program. The cut represents roughly 10% of all elementary school facilities in Chicago Public Schools, the country´s third-largest school district. "Every child in every neighborhood in Chicago deserves access to a high-quality education that prepares them to succeed in life, but for too long children in certain parts of Chicago have been cheated out of the resources they

In Philadelphia, at a human abattoir on Lancaster Avenue, is where it ends, not where it starts. It starts with the perversion of language. It starts when the icons of a dissipated culture reduce a baby to a “fetus.” From there, Yeats’s blood-dimmed tide rolls rapidly in. Before long, a baby is not a person but a punishment, as President Barack Obama framed the matter in his familiar off-the-cuff iciness. Of course, to describe newborn children in their boundless possibilities and wonder would be to acknowledge, foremost, their humanity. That is why, instead, abortion enthusiasts must grope for words

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act, said on Tuesday that the healthcare law, set to go into full effect in less than eight months, is “probably the most complex piece of legislation ever passed by the United States Congress” and “is just beyond comprehension.” Rockefeller said he is concerned that early missteps with implementing the healthcare overhaul may cascade into confusion and chaos. The law, said Rockefeller, is “so complicated and if it isn’t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse.” Rockefeller’s consternation echoes comments made earlier this

They say they were just doing what the boss trained them to do. But eight former employees of a run-down West Philadelphia abortion clinic now face prison time for the work they did for Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Three have pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. And Gosnell, 72, is on trial in the deaths of a patient and seven babies allegedly born alive. In testimony at the capital murder trial this past month, an unlicensed doctor and untrained aides described long, chaotic days at the clinic. They said they performed grueling, often gruesome work for little more than minimum wage,

With President Obama, there’s always a catch. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

In the opening sequence Rod Serling informs us: "A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines -- because they displeased him -- and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages -- just by using his mind. . . . and the people there have to smile. A few hours after Margaret Thatcher´s death on Monday, the snarling deadbeats of the British underclass were gleefully rampaging through the streets of Brixton in South London, scaling the marquee of the local fleapit and hanging a banner announcing, "THE B@&$! Mrs. Thatcher would have enjoyed all this. Her former speechwriter John O´Sullivan recalls how, some years after leaving office, she
