McCain’s Last Laugh

| Woodbridge, Va. — Senator John McCain nearly leaps out of a black sport-utility vehicle and makes his way toward the door of American Legion Post 364. He grins widely and shakes a few hands. His jowly face looks ancient, but his frame is lean, and he moves quickly. “Hey there! How are ya?” he says, as he grabs the shoulders of silver-haired men in garrison caps. Four years ago, McCain lost a presidential election by 192 electoral votes, but to Vietnam veterans and other former service members, he remains a towering figure. The second McCain steps inside,

Costa's article brings a tear to this old Navy man's eyes too. This was a story well worth telling. John McCain is a genuine patriot who loves his country. His dad and grandfather would be proud of this kid who went over the wall at USNA to find girls and a beer. I pray that his efforts along with thousands of others in VA help Mitt to win the state, and the nation. Former Tin Can Sailor

I truly respect John McCain's military service. As a veteran myself, there is nothing like the camaraderie of old warriors. He fits in well with this group.
Unfortunately--as a Senator, he very often fits in well with his democrat colleagues.
But, I'm happy he is helping Romney by visiting the American Legion and VFW posts.

Sure...but when one goes back and looks at McCain's Alfred E. Smith dinner speech on YouTube with Obama-Mao four years ago, then compare that offering with Romney's of this year, tell me that this old war horse really wanted to win the presidency!
No, he just wanted to be with "his boys" in the Senate.
Now, he says he wants to be with his boys in the Legion...
He is still a prisoner...tough reality in so many ways. I respect his military service, not his political life.
Stay in the Legion, have a few beers pal.

McCain has done far more to destroy this country in his 4 decades in office than he ever did to save it while serving in the military. How long do we give a guy a pass? How much devastation before we have the guts to admit that net/net, McCain has been an abject disaster?

everytime I see his face I wonder if the money and advice he took from soros was worth the pain my country is suffering. And it is clear from watching how he campaigned to retain his senatorial seat, that there was a HUGE difference in HOW he campaigned for potus.

Had we a candidate four years ago willing to call Barrack Hussein Obama out publicly for being the ambulatory falsehood he is, we would not be here right now, trillions further in debt and trying to understand how our "leadership" abandoned our people when under fire.
That is McCain's legacy. A true hero who somehow lost his way to a disastrous extent.

Everything McCain did as a Senator wiped out his oath as an officer. He took an oath to uphold the Constitution as a Senator too, you know...and look what he's done! Campaign Finance Reform, pandering to those across the aisle, stabbing the GOP in the back as often as he could, WILLFULLY ceding ground to his opponent during the 2008 campaign.
I hate that man. I hate what he's done to our country. Whatever respect he might have had from me as a soldier was LOST while he was a Senator. I can't wait for him to retire.

I won't go so far as to say I hate McCain but I truly dislike him, his years in the Senate have been disastrous for this country. He needs to go away.
Now don't press me on my feeling for Zip...I can't seem to turn the other cheek for that evil.

John McCain had a chance in 2008 to show just how ''maveric'' he was; he could have voted against the stimulus package but he did not. He betrayed those who supported him, despite his love affair with the Democrats.
Had he been elected, I doubt we would be better off financially; once a spender, always a spender – plus we would have had the specter of Zippy waiting in the wings, ready to destroy whatever would be left.
As it stands now, we have a chance of saving our country without having to worry about Chicago interfering too much with America.

President Obama likes pretending he floats above politics. In fact, he is the most compulsively partisan president in modern times. Everything he says and does is better understood through a partisan lens. So consider the recent Washington Post article in which Scott Wilson and Philip Rucker reported Mr. Obama wants to "cement his legacy" by working "to flip the Republican-held House back to Democratic control" so he can then "push forward with a progressive agenda on gun control, immigration, climate change and the economy during his final two years in office."

MARION COUNTY, Tenn.—Brad Carver, a Georgia lobbyist, is thirsting for a small patch of land just north of the line now dividing Georgia from Tennessee. Two centuries ago, surveyors from Georgia and Tennessee marched through the region´s mountains and hollows to mark the official border between the two states. They were supposed to follow the 35th parallel, according to an agreement approved in 1802 by Congress. Instead, they wandered about a mile south, marking a border that puts the Georgia state line here, just a minute´s stroll from the edge of the broad Tennessee River.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” So begins Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities. On Monday in Florida, I witnessed a Tale of Two Ricks: Rick Scott, the former hospital executive who rode to the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee on the Tea Party wave, and Rick Perry, the veteran governor of Texas who was Tea Party before the Tea Party existed. For Perry, a product and comfortable inhabitant of a political monoculture, it’s still the best of times. For Scott, who leads a state that has been trending Democratic,

House conservatives are growing restless. With bipartisan deals emerging on guns and immigration, Tea Party lawmakers in the lower chamber are warning their leaders to slow down. Longtime immigration reform critic Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) was alarmed when saw the bullet point “immigration” on the agenda for Wednesday’s GOP conference meeting. “Up on our agenda came immigration … [leadership is] going to bring immigration, according to the agenda, sometime to the floor. How do we know we’re going to do immigration when we haven’t talked about it yet? How come don’t I know this, because I’m on the [Judiciary] committee?

Is it ever okay to bug an opponent’s political headquarters? Even those who are too young to remember what happened when officials connected with Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign unleashed an incompetent band of dirty tricksters on the offices of the Democratic National Committee in Washington’s Watergate complex, one would think the answer to that question is an emphatic no. While the Watergate scandal may have been more about the cover up than the crime, the line crossed by Nixon’s henchmen has always appeared to be a bright line that no one—not even liberals

The house at 3215 MLK Jr. Ave. is the site of Congress Heights Community Training & Development Corp., but it also serves as a haven for small businesses many of which appear to be based outside the District that have received $3.5 million from the D.C. government in the past three years alone. Four senators may have signed on to a gun background check deal Wednesday, but only two showed up for the news conference — in part because Pennsylvania GOP Sen. Patrick J. Toomey’s public support for the bill hinged on not having to stand next to Democratic Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York. The background check bill, which would close the gun show loophole and expand checks to online sales, is officially co-sponsored by Schumer; Toomey; Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va.; and Mark S. Kirk, R-Ill. But only Toomey and Manchin appeared before the cameras.

The Gang of Eight — four Democratic and four Republican U.S. senators — have been meeting behind closed doors since January to produce “comprehensive immigration reform.” That will mean a multi-thousand-page bill that no one reads. You know the saying “fool me twice.” Americans got bamboozled in 2010, when the 2,572 page Obama health law was rushed through Congress unread. The surprises buried in that law are causing havoc. Let’s not repeat the mistake of “comprehensive” reform. Congress needs to fix immigration one step at a time, passing individual bills in plain English on border security, hiring, access to benefits

WASHINGTON—Senate Democrats are expected to defeat on Thursday a Republican effort to block gun-control legislation, paving the way for the full chamber to take up the issue for the first time since the December shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. A bipartisan group of negotiators working on expanding background checks for gun buyers also appeared poised to announce a deal at a joint news conference Wednesday. An aide close to the talks said Tuesday night that they were working out legislative language. Democrats appeared to have the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster and bring the gun bill

Denver-based CNN journalist Jim Spellman says the total lack of media coverage of the legal travails faced by Fox News reporter Jana Winter for protecting her sources clearly demonstrates an anti-Fox News bias in the press. Spellman claimed in a tweet that if Winter, who faces a subpoena and potential contempt of court charges for protecting her sources, worked for the New York Times instead of Fox News, the case would be garnering far greater exposure. “Observation: If @janawinter, who may go to jail to protect sources, worked for @nytimes instead of @FoxNews the case would be huge,” Spellman tweeted Sunday night.

In the U.K., private ownership of firearms is virtually banned. Professional criminals can still get guns, of course, but for your typical thug, knives are the weapon of choice. Thus there has been a steady outpouring of concern over burgeoning “knife crime” in recent years. The Sun undertook a bit of investigative journalism to find out how easy it is to obtain knives illegally, and was shocked at the result: LETHAL swords, machetes and knives are being sold illegally to children — with no questions asked. Obama will release his budget this week, and we already know that he´s going to try to stake out a treacherous "middleground" as he attempts to cast himself as a bold centrist, willing to stand apart from leftist Democrats. He´ll do so by, reportedly, introducing a Chained CPI, which is a way of cutting Social Security by using a different inflation measure that won´t rise as much. Liberals are already livid. Congressman Jerry Nadler — who is part of the Democratic party´s Progressive Caucus — slammed the reports in a comment made on Friday: I am quite concerned by reports

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
