| As the election approaches, it’s not only candidates who face a reckoning. Pollsters, too, confront a moment of truth. The close election could leave many calling the wrong winner. On a recent day, six national polls reported new results. Four had Mitt Romney leading; two had President Obama. The largest victory margin was 3 points (for Romney). The average margin was 2 points. The elections will be the moment the truth is revealed. I have dug into polls virtually the entire year and the independents have been agreeing on most issues with the Republicans and not with the Democrats. IMHO, the Independents that voted for Obama in 2008 are looking for an alternative. They have now had sufficient exposure to judge whether to believe what Romney says he believes or to trust Obama's description of what Romney believes.

Our local paper did an unscientific online poll of who the readers expected to win and it was Romney 55 to Obama 45 in a heavily Dem. area in NE Ohio.

Samuelson needs to wake up & smell the roses. JD Powers & others do their polling via the internet. Modern technology allows them to stop robo answers & duplicates.

I have a sister who is a very serious person. She's in her sixties and plays straight down the line, by the rules. It such a deal we all tease her about it. She is like a female Romney-doesn't swear, always nice, never leaves the straight and narrow.
But now she tells us about how she lies to pollsters, and she seems to take some pleasure in it. She just is- like all of us- sick of people on the phone trying to sell you something, or get you to do this or that, etc.
It's more that cellphones that are giving them a problem. It's who they are and what they do. She has caller ID, but she also has kids, so (unlike us who ignore everything except calls from people we know) she answers sometimes from unknown numbers. Pollsters make her go nuts. But they make most people I know go that way.
Now they think they are going to poll us on our cellphones for 20 minutes? Are they crazy? Or just dumb?
I love my Roku but my husband swears part of it is because I din't have to ever look at Frank Luntz again.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. It seems very odd that President Obama has made gun control the signature issue of his second term, so far. He can’t possibly achieve any significant legislation; a few tweaks to the background check system, maybe, but there is no chance of getting any meaningful gun control through the House. The House Democrats aren’t even trying. So it also seems strange that all eyes are on the Senate, where Harry Reid will unveil some sort of gun legislation–no one knows what, exactly–on Thursday. The party’s left-wing base is lining up behind the bill, sight unseen.

In a poll conducted by PoliceOne, a majority of law enforcement personnel said universal background checks, "assault weapons" bans, and "high capacity" magazine bans do not make police safer and will not lower violent crime. Armed citizens, on the other hand, do make a positive difference. In the poll of 15,000 law enforcement professionals, 71% of respondents said an "assault weapons" ban would have zero impact on violent crime. Of those surveyed, 95.7% said the same of a "high capacity" magazine ban, and 79.7% said the same in response to a question on universal background checks.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is actively shopping for a drone that would "stalk hunters," the organization said Monday.
