I live a block and a half from an evacuation zone on the East Side.

Our building management advised us to stay indoors. We rarely lose electric ... only once in all the 20 years I've been in this building.

I've got lots of things to occupy myself for a few days.

Philly Mayor Nutter has interrupted the football game and started out with a 2 minute campaign commercial for the Butcher of Benghazi. He is also quoting FEMA as labeling the storm a Cat 1 hurricane which is a direct contradiction of the Nat. Weather Service, typical Dem.

Here in NOVA we just don't know what will happen. They are predicting up to 10 inches of rain, and wind gusts over 60 miles an hour. We rarely lose power, but bought sandwich makings, fruit, etc. for eating without a refrigerator. The thing that worries me is we all use kindles, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fire. I have a "thing" I bought to charge my car battery, but we can also use it as electrical power. No generators in our townhouse.

My daughter lives in DC so I hope this storm turns out to be a nothing-burger as most do here in the south. I say that thankful that most storms do turn out to be just rain and wind with no or minimal flooding and other damage. It's always good to be prepared.

70 shutdown is premature. I'm in northern VA and it ~just~ started raining. There's no wind yet. Nothing will hit NY for hours or more.

The media is in overdrive on this, because it take some heat off of 0bama. Sandy is 75mph, one mph over the 74mph minimum for Stage 1. When it makes shore in one to two days, it will likely be much less.

Now, we have 0bama doing the weather report on every network with guys in military fatigues behind him. This is a pathetic effort to look like a leader. Plus, if he really has nothing better to do, maybe he can broadcast the truth about Benghazigate.

He should be required to pay for his airtime, just like Romney.

NYC just closed the subways. They are evacuating people from Ocean City, Maryland on up the coast. The storm is dumping A LOT of snow in West Virginia. Sandy is big, strong and covering a lot of territory.

The wind and rain will leave a lot of us without power and the roads impassable.

Hope all are safe and have everything you need. Just keep thinking, ''Nine more days! Nine more days!''

Reply 10 - Posted by: mossley, 10/28/2012 7:54:30 PM     (No. 8970331)

Why do people have this fixation with wind speed? Sandy isn't the fastest, but it is huge and slow. That means a wide area is going to get dumped on. The pressure is extremely low - a bad sign. Flooding from the surge is a serious threat.

It's going to hit a cold front, and that means blizzard conditions in the mountains; 10 counties in WVa are under blizzard alert and it's already snowing in parts of the state.

I'm in Maryland, and it's been raining all day. The roads are already starting to pool, and the heart of the storm is nowhere near us yet.

Prayers for all in the path of the storm, thinking of you and hoping for the best. I remember a few years ago, we were hit with a major ice storm, no power for weeks, still dealing with the damage to the trees, they were damaged so bad. The electric company this summer has been putting in new poles and lines, they think they should be done by December, everything was so damaged it takes time. Just praying and hoping that everyone stays safe on the east coast.

Got a text from a niece in Maryland. On Friday she waited in line for several hours to vote and finally had to give up. Has stocked up to ride out the storm and will try again just as soon as the polls open again.

What happens to New York City's Subway if a storm surge inundates Manhattan?

How many feet above sea level are the streets in Manhattan?

Understand I don't want that to happen, but I suspect it would take a lot more than a category 1 hurricane to cause any real damage.

If the wireless Internet connection during your holiday flight seems more reliable than it used to, you could have the humble potato to thank.
