| Republicans remember the battle cry of the Bill Clinton campaign all so well. “It’s the economy, stupid.” That prophetic statement trumpeted why Bush I -- George Herbert -- ended up a one-term president in 1992 despite having an 89 percent approval rating midway during his term. Now, 20 years later, we see the same thing happening again. This time, however, it is the Democrats on the receiving end. Of the many issues that separate incumbent President Barack Obama from Republican challenger Mitt Romney, none stick out more than the economy.

Just to refute one thing, it wasn't the economy that defeated Bush Sr; it was Ross Perot receiving all those conservative votes that lost the election. Check out Clinton's percentage. He wouldn't have got many of Perot's votes, but Bush would have had more than enough with them to win.
Sometimes I wonder if many of the people are even aware of what went on at that time.

#5 Thanks. Set the record straight. Bush I was not very smart politically, however. He was too hail fellow well met and frat boyish. He still thinks Bill Clinton is his best bud. How can grown men still think any Dem can be a friend to any Repub. Snakes do not have friends.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Jonathan Winters when I saw Larry’s obit this evening. Baby boomers and their parents became acquainted with Winters through his appearances on The Tonight Show first with Jack Paar and then Johnny Carson or in movies like It’s a Mad, Mad World and The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth.
