When an early camera caught a
future president watching a dead one

Investor's Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

It's difficult much of the time to think of presidents in history as having a life on either side of being president. They exist in history books and in fables, especially when they are for a time larger than life, even in death. Abraham Lincoln would be like that. And for us anyway, so is Theodore Roosevelt, who was born yesterday, 154 years ago. [Snip] Now comes a fascinating photograph that links the life of one great president and the death of another.

I've long believed that photography and particularly movies and talkies, were most important developments. With proper care future generations will have them to study.

Today's digital images are transient. How many pictures are discarded or lost on defective hard drives? It's the casual family pictures that get pulled out of trunks and shoe boxes that amaze family members.

Don't forget that a mentally challenged brother to two old ladies in the play Arsenic and Old Lace believes he is Teddy Roosevelt digging locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar, which serves as a place to bury the bodies of the men the two sweet old ladies poison. Great play and loved brother "Teddy Roosevelt".

Not sure Teddy Roosevelt should be on Mt. Rushmore; although thanks to Teddy, we have a National Parks system. I think Ronald Reagan should be there, but I doubt if any new ones will be carved there again.

I believe they say there is not enough solid rock left for another one there. If you have not been to Mt Rushmore by all means try to go. My sister and I stayed in Rapid City 9 days and want to go back. There is so much history and scenery in the area and be sure to drive to Nebraska for lunch!!

Obama stunner on George W. Bush:

Michelle and I are honored to be with you to mark this historic occasion. This is a Texas-sized party. And that’s worthy of what we’re here to do today: honor the life and legacy of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush. When all the living former Presidents are together, it’s also a special day for our democracy. We’ve been called “the world’s most exclusive club.” But the truth is, our club is more like a support group. The last time we all got together was just before I took office. And I needed that.

Much of the country´s political attention tomorrow will be focused on Dallas where President George W. Bush´s interactive presidential library opens, attracting all four of the nation´s living former presidents plus Barack Obama, the incumbent for the remaining 1,367 days of his final term. Less attention focused on Obama´s political fundraiser in Dallas tonight and his plans for Thursday evening. By then, he´ll be back in Washington to headline the annual evening of self-congratulation for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. At an awkward time, given the Kermit Gosnell trial.

Fifty-one months of an Obama presidency seem like an eternity of speeches, photo ops, fundraisers, soaring debt, stagnant job growth, blame games and did we mention speeches? In historical context, however, it´s the snap of a finger. Which makes it somewhat surprising that already Americans are rehabilitating President George W. Bush´s image in their own minds. This despite Bush´s virtual disappearance from the political scene since Jan. 20, 2009, save for a brief promotion tour for his book, "Decision Points." You´re about to hear a whole lot more about Bush, at least briefly.

America has a special responsibility to safeguard our environment. The first Earth Day marked a renewal of America´s global leadership in conservation. [Snip] These successes continue to bring health and prosperity to communities nationwide. As environmental challenges evolve with a changing world, my Administration is committed to meeting them.

Britain staged the funeral of former British Prime Minister and staunch American ally Margaret Thatcher the other day. They skipped the RAF flyover at the request of Thatcher, a conservative thrift even in death. We wrote here about that impressive day, including its regrettably classless dismissal by America´s highest-ranking South Sider. It´s as if Obama already knows and resents how much more she accomplished as a leader from the front than he can ever dream of achieving from his chosen position behind. But today we want to ruminate on the language that day.

On Monday, an act of terror wounded dozens and killed three innocent people at the Boston Marathon. But in the days since, the world has witnessed one sure and steadfast truth: Americans refuse to be terrorized. Ultimately, that’s what we’ll remember from this week. That’s what will remain. Stories of heroism and kindness; resolve and resilience; generosity and love. The brave first responders — police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and National Guard — who ran toward danger to help their fellow citizens.

Hi, I’m Tim Scott, Senator from South Carolina. This week, on Patriot’s Day, a day that celebrates the beginning of our country’s journey toward freedom, a horrific tragedy occurred. The Boston Marathon bombing has left us all with a heavy heart and we pray for the victims and their families. However, while the perpetrators of this act of terror hoped that they could shake the confidence of a city, they have instead only strengthened the resolve of our nation.

Given the self-fulfilling, self-importance of the national media, anything of lasting political, social or economic importance by definition must happen in or be somehow tied to Washington, D.C. This media myopia helps explain the "surprising" news stories that regularly seem to burst on the national scene when, in fact, they´ve been percolating a while in states and cities around the country. [Snip] It is admittedly no easy task to professionally monitor what´s happening locally in 50 far-flung states, especially given the contraction of resources at traditional media news-gatherers.

It would have been interesting to be a waiter at the Jefferson Hotel last evening as Democrat President Obama dined with a dozen Senate Democrats after so angrily and thoroughly denouncing said chamber and said Democrats a few hours earlier. It was a mortifying day for the Chicago machine Democrat, unaccustomed as he is to fellow party members defying their titular head. Five Democrats joined 41 Republicans against 54 other Dems to defeat expanded gun purchase background checks in a vote requiring 60 to pass. Such checks were once considered a virtual gimme for the Oval Office shotgun buff.

In one of those ceremonial pageants the Brits invented, Margaret Hilda Thatcher´s funeral unfolded this morning on the old streets of London to the sounds of the classical music she loved and Bible verses in St. Paul´s Cathedral. So great was the global appreciation for the Iron Lady who led Great Britain from 1979-90, that 2,000 dignitaries attended, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. This was the monarch´s first funeral of a former prime minister in nearly a half-century. [Snip] Alas, in a sad slap at its closest European ally, the American president sent no one from his administration.

The bloody scene looked more like Kabul or Baghdad Monday afternoon. But it was downtown Boston on a bright, shiny holiday at the finish line for the Boston Marathon. There, two trash can bombs went off, injuring scores and killing three, including an eight-year-old boy. The awful spectacle was doubly shocking to Americans because, Fort Hood aside, homeland terrorism has been largely thwarted since 9/11. To maximize the impact of their deadly cowardice, terrorists plan their deeds not for, say Mile 18 of a marathon.

The unfailing reverence on the American right for Ronald Reagan is understandable. He was the only exemplar of modern conservatism to win the White House, and unlike liberal icons such as Roosevelt or Johnson or Obama, he presided over an economic boom and became beloved by voters not normally drawn to his party. No wonder that Reagan, long before his death in 2004, attained mythical status in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. But that myth has become a burden for the modern GOP. It has bound Reagan’s followers on the right to policies and positions that were

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. Unlike you, federal government officials are immune from charges of fraud. The executive branch, vested with all of the government’s prosecutorial authority and discretion, is not going to investigate its own operatives for carrying out its own mendacious policies. That is the story of last week’s Boston Marathon bombing and the frantic efforts of the bombers, the brothers Tsarnaev, to evade capture, shoot it out with police (two of whom they killed), and — we’re now told — detonate more bombs in Times Square. The Times Square non-attack is quite interesting.

President Obama´s weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. Our top priority as a nation must be growing the economy, creating good jobs, and rebuilding opportunity for the middle class. But two months ago, Congress allowed a series of automatic budget cuts to fall across the federal government that would do the opposite. In Washington-speak, these cuts were called the “sequester.” It was a bad idea then. And as the country saw this week, it’s a bad idea now. Because of these reckless cuts, there are parents whose kids just got kicked out of Head Start programs scrambling for a solution.
