Our children's America

Think back. Minutes before 2 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2008, a 158-year-old investment bank obscure to most Americans -- Lehman Brothers -- became the biggest company ever to file for bankruptcy. In succeeding days, then weeks, then months, the panic-inducing phrase “global financial crisis” lunged out of mothballs to frighten, and eventually debilitate, millions of households. Credit seized. Employers retrenched. Jobs vanished. Home values plummeted. Partisans scanned the horizon for culprits, but there was no one place to aim the blame gun;

The Trib is more in the tank for obama than msnbc. They, along with their former employee Axelrod, pulled dirty tricks to assist obama in his senate campaign. They sold their souls long ago.

CHICAGO- A housing complex geared toward helping veterans at risk of becoming homeless will be built on Chicago´s South Side next year, officials announced Thursday. The Hope Manor II apartments, funded by federal, state and city grant money, will have 73 units, ranging from studio to four-bedroom apartments. Residents will have access to services such as job training, family counseling and mental health screening. The project expands on a concept started last summer, when the original Hope Manor opened on Chicago´s West Side.

Chicago Public Schools’ removal of the graphic novel Persepolis from classrooms sparked protests Friday and outcry from the autobiographical novel’s Iranian-born author. The district denied Friday it had banned the book outright from CPS schools, saying instead it only removed them from 7th grade classrooms for being “inappropriate.” CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett also ordered up training for any high school teachers who wish to continue using the illustrated story of Marjane Satrapi growing up in revolutionary Iran.

Federal securities regulators implicitly blamed former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his budget office for the fraudulent manner in which state bond investors were misled about Illinois’ sickly pension ledgers. But in making a nearly unprecedented case of securities fraud against the state, the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday laid bare a trail of responsibility for Illinois’ nearly $100 billion pension crisis that extends far beyond the impeached ex-governor’s scandalous time in office.

In the dark hours of Thursday morning, Feb. 28, I awoke to find CNN featuring a continuous shot of a helicopter. The network cut between a close-up and a distant dot. It was Benedict, flying from the Vatican City. This was extraordinary attention for an ordinary cardinal, because as Benedict told the throng awaiting him, “I am no longer pope.” I am not a scholar of Catholic history, but I believe we were witnessing the first time the papal throne was vacant. It may have been occupied by rogues, scoundrels, impostors or even a woman, but always there was someone sitting there.

Ald. James Cappleman (46th) informed the Salvation Army on Friday that it is no longer welcome to feed the poor in Uptown from its homeless outreach trucks. Cappleman gave the social service agency one month to find a new North Side location — outside his ward — before ceasing operations, said Capt. Nancy Powers, who oversees the Salvation Army’s homeless program in Chicago.

American health care is being transformed, for better or worse. “Better,” in this case, means parts of the Affordable Care Act that have polled well and been enacted, taking their place comfortably in the medical system. These include letting dependent children stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26 and a ban on insurance companies dropping children for pre-existing conditions

Rep. Luis Gutierrez had just returned from taping a segment on “The O´Reilly Factor,” forming half of an ideological odd couple with Bill O´Reilly if there ever was one. He was preparing a House floor speech declaring, “The Republican Party really met Latinos on Election Day.” And he was telling me on the phone that, when it´s all over, “Chicago is going to see a lot more of Luis Gutierrez.” It´s that kind of moment for the Chicago Democrat. For nearly two decades, the onetime Northwest Side alderman has been an oft-lonely voice in the Washington wilderness on immigration reform.

With due respect to all of you hardworking political consultants and TV station owners, there´s only one reason to hold an election. That´s to determine who will shoulder the oft-onerous task of governing. Now that the election is over, President Barack Obama holds that honor. So do Springfield Democrats, particularly House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. They wanted the job. They got the job. Now they have to produce. On the national level, one clear need is immigration reform.

The unfailing reverence on the American right for Ronald Reagan is understandable. He was the only exemplar of modern conservatism to win the White House, and unlike liberal icons such as Roosevelt or Johnson or Obama, he presided over an economic boom and became beloved by voters not normally drawn to his party. No wonder that Reagan, long before his death in 2004, attained mythical status in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. But that myth has become a burden for the modern GOP. It has bound Reagan’s followers on the right to policies and positions that were

Michelle Obama did not walk the E!-streamed red carpet before tonight´s White House Correspondents´ Dinner — she was already at home, of course — so our first glimpse of her black Monique Lhuillier gown came later, once dinner started. And damn does she look good. This is a sexier look on her than usual, with a sheer lace panel over her decolletage and a molded bustier-style top. She very wisely chose a dress that photographs well while she´s sitting down, Schiaparelli-style, with elaborate beading along her collarbone and fitted cap sleeves that flatter her arms. Unlike you, federal government officials are immune from charges of fraud. The executive branch, vested with all of the government’s prosecutorial authority and discretion, is not going to investigate its own operatives for carrying out its own mendacious policies.That is the story of last week’s Boston Marathon bombing and the frantic efforts of the bombers, the brothers Tsarnaev, to evade capture, shoot it out with police (two of whom they killed), and — we’re now told — detonate more bombs in Times Square. The Times Square non-attack is quite interesting.

President Obama´s weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. Our top priority as a nation must be growing the economy, creating good jobs, and rebuilding opportunity for the middle class. But two months ago, Congress allowed a series of automatic budget cuts to fall across the federal government that would do the opposite. In Washington-speak, these cuts were called the “sequester.” It was a bad idea then. And as the country saw this week, it’s a bad idea now. Because of these reckless cuts, there are parents whose kids just got kicked out of Head Start programs scrambling for a solution.

President Barack Obama on Saturday called on the US Congress to end the "reckless" and "dumb" budget cuts known as the sequester, and to adopt a plan of "smarter" cuts to fuel economic growth. Obama´s weekly address comes after Congress on Friday overwhelming approved a bill putting furloughed air traffic controllers back on the job, thus undoing one of the most high-profile effects of the so-called sequestration, the $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that took effect March 1 and hit federal spending across the board. Washington - America´s blacks voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time, reflecting a deeply polarized presidential election in which blacks strongly supported Barack Obama while many whites stayed home. Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly, according to an analysis conducted for The Associated Press. WASHINGTON — Russian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the Boston bombing suspects vaguely discussed jihad with his mother, officials said Saturday, days after the U.S. government finally received details about the call. In another conversation, the mother of now-dead bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, officials said. The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family. Washington - President Barack Obama warned Syria on Friday that its use of chemical weapons would be a "game changer" for the United States but made clear he was in no rush to intervene in the civil war there on the basis of evidence he said was still preliminary. Speaking a day after the disclosure of U.S. intelligence that Syria had likely used chemical weapons against its own people, Obama talked tough while calling for patience as he sought to fend off pressure for a swift response against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Democrats proposed sequestration as part of a package to secure an increase in the debt ceiling, but they never expected it to go into effect. When it did, they felt double-crossed, apparently because they thought Republicans owed it to them to fold like a cheap suit, as usual. When the Republicans figured out that sticking with the sequester was a pretty good outcome–it represented a modest, but real, restraint on federal spending, which is what Republicans always say they want–the Democrats went to Plan B. It’s a strategy they have often used before: cut back

Florida GOP senator Marco Rubio seems well-meaning enough. I know we both share, as second-generation conservative Americans, a common passion for this great land of opportunity. But when it comes to comprehending the real agenda of the open-borders zealots he’s allied himself with, Rubio doesn’t have a clue. And his abject ignorance threatens all of us who cherish American sovereignty and exceptionalism. On Fox News’ The Sean Hannity Show Tuesday night, Rubio defended his Gang of Eight “immigration reform” bill and insisted that we could and should have a system in place that vets
