| Republican nominee Mitt Romney jumped back out to a 5-point lead over President Barack Obama in Gallup's daily tracking poll of likely voters Friday, and now leads the president 51-46. Obama and Romney are now tied, 48-48, among registered voters, and the president's approval rating dipped to just 48 percent, below the "safe" level for an incumbent's re-election. The results indicate the halting of what had been a pronounced Obama bounce over the past seven days of polling. Obama had climbed back from a 7-point deficit a week ago to just 3 points over the past two days.

I'd like to think that Americans with a reasonable value system are finding the recent remarks and advertisements by Obama to be repugnant. That is not attracting the independents, so Obama must be playing it all on getting out his far left base.

Shortly after finishing the Boston Marathon this week David Green, 49, was walking to meet friends when two bombs exploded in front of him as he faced east on the corner of Fairfield and Boylston Streets. He snapped a photograph with his iPhone at 2:50:15 p.m. before rushing to help those wounded. He posted it to Facebook with an account of his experiences. On Thursday, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation released images of the two suspects in the blast, Mr. Green’s friends began to notice a figure in the bottom left corner of his picture that closely

Investigators have now cleared the two men whose pictures were circulated last night in an email among law enforcement officials, sources told The Post today. Authorities determined neither had any information or role in Monday’s attacks at the Boston Marathon. The pictures, which were distributed yesterday evening in an attempt to identify them, show the two men standing with a backpack and duffel bag near the finish line, where a pair of bombs killed three and maimed 176. Meanwhile, sources said today that the feds have an image from a store video camera of a person of interest.

Federal agents on Wednesday arrested a suspect in the mailing of letters to President Barack Obama and a U.S. senator that initially tested positive for the poison ricin. The suspect was identified as Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo, Miss., federal officials told NBC News. Both letters carried an identical closing statement, according to an FBI bulletin obtained by NBC News on Wednesday. According to the FBI bulletin, both letters, postmarked April 8, 2013 out of Memphis, Tenn., included an identical phrase, "to see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance."

Washington — President Barack Obama says the Senate’s opposition to a bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers marks a “shameful day” in Washington. He says a minority of senators decided “it wasn’t worth it” to protect the nation’s children. Obama spoke in the Rose Garden shortly after the Senate vote rejecting a bipartisan effort to expand federal background checks to more firearms buyers. (Snip) The president pinned the blame for the measures failure, though five Democrats also opposed the plan. He also said the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied” about background check bill.

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

If Tiger Woods feels in need of understanding company as his Masters bid erupts into controversy, then he will surely find it in new girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn. The 28-year-old blonde has supported him throughout the tournament and is a supreme athlete in her own right. She is the greatest female downhill skier of her generation and has been credited with making Woods happy again after the collapse of his marriage to Elin Nordegren. ‘We’d known their secret for some time on the ski circuit,’ said Chemmy Alcott, Britain’s most successful woman skier and a long-time friend of Vonn.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

WASHINGTON — New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer admonished colleagues not to “try to conflate” the immigration reform bill that the Senate is considering with the bombings at the Boston Marathon, the perpetrators of which have been identified as immigrants. “I’d like to ask that all of us not jump to conclusions regarding the events in Boston or try to conflate those events with this legislation,” Schumer said Friday at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the immigration bill. As the hearing was happening, the Boston metropolitan area was on lockdown, as police attempted to

They appear to be from Turkey, possibly Chechens from Turkey. That seems to be the nationality here. We´re told they were not students, in their early twenties. One 20, one 21. We don´t have their names yet. While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

Mark Kelly, the astronaut husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on Thursday upbraided senators who voted against gun legislation by saying they voted “out of fear.” ”If that vote had been a secret ballot, I bet you it would have passed with 80 votes,” Kelly told reporters. He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

After all the controversy – it was too much, and too expensive; it would be marred by protests – this morning’s funeral for Lady Thatcher in London was a splendid and memorable affair, which did her memory, and her country, proud. It was a moving, dignified and pitch-perfect occasion: unmistakably British, and a fitting send-off for the country’s greatest post-war prime minister. Big Ben fell silent – for the first time since the funeral of wartime leader Winston Churchill – and tens of thousands of admirers lined the streets to applaud Lady Thatcher’s coffin

Waco - Baylor star Brittney Griner has revealed she’s a lesbian. The Bears center, who was picked No. 1 overall in the recent WNBA Draft (to the Phoenix Mercury) and is considered by many to be an all-time great in women’s college basketball, casually explained her sexual orientation to Sports Illustrated. Griner was asked by SI’s Maggie Gray on the difference between men’s and women’s sports when it comes to acceptance of sexual orientation; why the WNBA has been able to often embrace many lesbians within their sport, while male sports in America still waits on its first publicly gay player.

Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday’s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon. The anxiety stemming from the attack and the stream of inaccurate news about it is further freighted, moreover, by the FBI’s confirmation that two letters addressed to top political officials — President Obama and Senator Richard Wicker (R., MS) — tested positive for ricin, a deadly poison. As noted below, a man identified as Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo, Mississippi, has reportedly been arrested in connection with the mailings. Early this afternoon, massive confusion
