| British officials have rejected US requests to use UK military bases for the growth of forces in the Gulf - as fears continue to grow over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, it was reported last night. The Americans are also said to have asked to use British bases in Cyprus--and fly from US bases on the British territories of Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. But British ministers have referenced legal advice from the Attorney General, insisting Iran--which is still denying any plans for nuclear weapon development--does not pose ‘a clear and present threat’.

I posted a Telegraph exclusive on this subject last night but there's more information in this piece. I do believe the British have recognized a somewhat blatant election ploy and are not taking the bait. There are many reasons why the British government does not trust the current occupier of the White House, not the least of which is secret British missile code information given by Obama to the Russians. Another reason would be Obama's support for Argentina on the Falklands.

I do hope that one of the first things President Romney does is to advise the Brits that he would be honored to have the bust of Sir Winston in the Oval Office. That might begin the healing of the wounds that Obama has inflicted on this longstanding, traditional relationship.

At various times for various reasons over the past decade the UK, Germany, Turkey, Italy and others have snubbed the US Military (air rights, refueling rights, etc.). We have and pay for 400 military installations in Europe pumping billions into their economies--close most of 'em. Romney's right, more ships, a more airlift capacity, more "lily pads, and more installations based in the US (coincidently along our border).

COLUMBIA—South Carolina’s unemployment agency will lay off 100 employees in June as part of a statewide reorganization that directs anyone seeking jobless benefits to use its upgraded online system, the agency’s interim director announced. John Finan said the Department of Employment and Workforce will eliminate one-on-one help with unemployment claims on June 10, and the number of local offices offering job training and other re-employment services will shrink. Exactly how many of those 56 offices remain open past June will depend on decisions made by the state’s 12 workforce investment boards, he said.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.
