The Vercher family, who recently lost their home of 20 years to foreclosure, posted an ad on Craigslist on Tuesday night, informing people that a yard-sale-style giveaway would take place at their home the following day. Foreclosed after 20 years. A 20 year old mortgage is going to be pretty small - much less than rent. They could easily rent a room or two and cover that mortgage. Unless...they later refinanced the house and sucked tons of equity out in the housing bubble days and now the house is worth less than they owe and they simply don't want to be on the hook. The "after 20 years" thing is designed to emotionally make people feel tehy are just good folk caught in a bad situation. The truth is probably different.
This sounds like a scam. As said - why not just lock your doors? I bet they moved the important stuff out first and are now looking for sympathy donations.

This is a scam.
The people wouldn't stop taking the stuff inside the house when they were told not to? Why didn't they lock the doors, physically stop them, and call the police? At the very least, scream for the neighbors to call the police and get the license plate numbers of the trucks and cars involved?
Let's talk about what really happened. The stuff was carted off by friends of these folks, they put up a minimum fuss (or not at all) and are trying to solicit free donations or insurance money. Later in their new place, friends bring the furniture back and get a cut of the money. Then the par-tay begins!
This thing stinks to high heavens.

BOISE, Idaho — Authorities in eastern Idaho are investigating the shooting deaths of two men and a woman whose bodies were found in a home that contained a marijuana grow operation. The deaths took place sometime between Thursday afternoon and evening by someone who had some type of relationship with the victims, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said. The bodies were discovered Friday outside Holbrook, a town of about 400 people just north of the Idaho-Utah state line. Authorities said a 2-month-old was found under the arm of one of the victims — 27-year-old Yavette Chivon Carter.
