| On July 15, 2010, President Obama appeared at a groundbreaking ceremony in Holland, Mich. to tout a $151 million stimulus grant his administration made to build the LG Chem electric car battery factory. "[W]hat this plant will prove is that we're headed in the right direction," he said. (snip) With his successful business career, Romney understands how government policies, however well-intentioned, can harm business growth and exacerbate unemployment. He will restore pragmatism, balance and fairness to a business climate that has been chilled by Obama's ideological approach to regulation.

Days after 80-year-old conservative mega-financier Bob Perry died, the Reuters news agency erroneously posted an obituary for George Soros, his liberal counterpart. “George Soros, who died XXX at age XXX, was a predatory and hugely successful financier and investor, who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions,” it said on its website Thursday. News agencies routinely prepare obituaries for living persons, and Mr. Soros is still alive at 82. Describing him as “an enigma, wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money,”

In testimony before the Senate Finance Committee Wednesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius couldn´t give specific answers to simple questions about the implementation of Obamacare. Committee chair Max Baucus -- a Democrat who helped write the bill -- told the secretary he sees a "train wreck coming." "I mean, you need data...you´ve never given me any data, you just give me concepts, frankly. And government´s not a business, but you´re going to have to have some data -- benchmarks -- to figure out what progress you are or are not making," Baucus said.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — Abu Dhabi´s new branch of the Louvre considers no artistic subject to be off limits but will not "shock for the sake of shocking", a top overseer said Tuesday. She spoke as the museum prepared to open a sample of its growing collection to public view, shedding light on the choices the city makes as it expands its international profile while testing how far to open its conservative culture. Objects including a medieval nude sculpture and Christian icons suggest the Abu Dhabi Louvre

Niamey, Niger -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the uranium-rich West African nation of Niger on Tuesday, although officials discounted that the mineral was the reason for his visit. Niger´s President Mahamadou Issoufou denied international speculation that Iran had come in search of uranium for its enrichment program, which Western powers suspect might aim to produce nuclear weapons. "We have not brought up the question of Nigerien uranium. Iran itself being a producer of minerals," Issoufou said.

Via Jim Treacher, I learn that Snopes.com has a page on whether or not the Kermit Gosnell trial exists: Claim: Dr. Kermit Gosnell is on trial on charges of having committed multiple gruesome and illegal late-term abortions. Is this true? Or just an urban myth? Click here for the exciting answer. Maybe Snopes could look into whether American journalism exists.

Quetta, Pakistan - A major earthquake centered on a border area of southeast Iran killed at least 13 people in neighboring Pakistan, destroyed hundreds of houses and shook buildings as far away as India and Gulf Arab states on Tuesday. Communications with the area, a sparsely populated desert and mountain region, were largely cut, leading to conflicting preliminary reports of casualties in Iran. An Iranian provincial governor later said there were no deaths there. The epicenter was far from any of Iran´s nuclear facilities. Pakistani officials said at least eight people were killed and 20 injured in the town of Mashkeel

Tehran, Iran -- A major earthquake described as the strongest to hit Iran in more than half a century flattened homes and offices Tuesday on both sides of the Iran-Pakistan border, killing at least 46 people in the sparsely populated region and swaying skyscrapers and buildings as far away as New Delhi. Iran´s Red Crescent said it was facing a "complicated emergency situation" in the area with villages scattered over desolate hills and valleys. Iran´s semiofficial ISNA news agency and others described the quake, measured at least magnitude 7.7, as the strongest quake in more than 50 years.

Venezuelans faced the prospect of extended political instability after the country’s electoral council proclaimed Nicolas Maduro president-elect and opposition supporters prepared to march in the streets a second day to demand a full recount of the April 14 election. The government dispatched anti-riot forces in Caracas yesterday as Maduro, who received 50.8 percent of the vote, was declared the winner. Tear gas was used to disperse protesters who didn’t accept the government refusal to recount the vote as demanded by opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski.

It is George W Bush’s particular achievement to be disliked by both sides in American politics. Democrats of course excoriate the damage done to the budget by waging two wars while cutting taxes, his conduct after Hurricane Katrina and his shoot from the hip style, not to mention that fact that he presided over the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. His own Republican party utterly rejected him during the 2012 campaign. Tea Party types saw him as a big-spender guilty of extending federal government, while few who once stood with him were prepared to defend his military achievements.

Pope Francis on Sunday said clergy and Christians must not betray the word of God with their actions or they undermine the credibility of the Catholic Church. Francis, elected a month ago, inherited a Church struggling to restore credibility after a series of scandals, including the sexual abuse of children by priests. The pope spoke at the Papal Basilica of St. Paul´s Outside the Walls, where he celebrated Mass. He also greeted pilgrims and local Church members earlier in St. Peter´s square. "Inconsistency on the part of pastors and the faithful between what they say and what they do,

Rome -- Pope Francis told priests on Sunday to practice what they preach, saying the church´s credibility was on the line. During a Mass to formally take possession of one of the Vatican basilicas in Rome, Francis said ordinary Catholics need to "see in our actions what they hear from our lips." Francis has made himself an example of a more humble and frugal church by refusing many of the trappings of the papacy, living in the Vatican hotel rather than the Apostolic Palace and wearing a simple white cassock of the papacy rather than fancy vestments and capes

Margaret Thatcher is getting her revenge on the Nancy men who mocked her in life, and who continue to throw rocks at her in death. Her reputation as “the Iron Lady” who towered over a plastic age is secure, and she’s getting a funeral that her girlhood idol Winston Churchill got before her. Big Ben, the famous clock that towers over Parliament, chiming the quarter-hour since 1859, will fall silent during the obsequies just as it did for Sir Winston nearly five decades ago. This has put Thatcher critics in a froth of toxic bile,

Federal law enforcement officials are actively investigating the possibility that the Boston bombers were known to the government’s terror-trackers, MailOnline understands. Any inquiry into the marathon bombing will look into whether agents could have taken action – but didn’t – to prevent the Tsarnaev brothers from obtaining the explosives that killed 3 and wounded 173 others. CBS News reported Friday evening that two years ago, the FBI interviewed the elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in Thursday night´s dramatic shootout. The feds reportedly spoke to him at the request of an unspecified foreign government, but couldn´t

So once again, no good deed goes unpunished. Uncle Sam lets another bunch of leeching future terrorists into the country who have absolutely no business being here, gives them “asylum,” making them immediately eligible for welfare, and this is the thanks we get? They turn into mass murderers. We bring in thousands of Muslims from a primitive society that has been battling Christians for centuries, and put them into a peaceful Christian society — what could possible go wrong? This is what I was thinking about yesterday, with much of the city under what amounted to martial law.

He carried the right message to the people of the Boston area and beyond when he told them Thursday ´we will finish this race.´ He also has a strong shot at gaining an immigration reform victory with the package drawn up by

Sen. Marco Rubio (R.-Fla.), one of eight senators who have crafted legislation that would put illegal aliens on a path to U.S. citizenship, explained in a Senate floor speech yesterday that one of the reasons he wants to do this is that he believes illegal aliens are currently driving on U.S. roads without drivers licenses and auto insurance and his bill would encourage them to get licenses and buy insurance. Rubio explained that under his bill ilegal aliens who "have committed serious crimes" will be deported. However, the proposal will apparently not deem as a serious crime the habit

We are still speculating about virtually everything right now, but I feel as though I need to explain why I find the quick and easy conversation about Muslims being radicalized in America to be so illogical and laced with bigotry. Of course, there is a global violent jihadist movement, loosely organized, that wants to recruit young men to influence policies at home and abroad and perhaps usher in the global caliphate. That ideology motivates some Muslims to kill innocent people. But you´re allowed to be a radical Muslim in America.

The Council on American Islamic Relations again offered sympathy to victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Friday, but added a plea for Americans not to generalize and conclude that Muslim teachings influenced the suspect in any way. "Our focus is primarily on the victims," said Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago chapter at a press conference Friday afternoon. "We don´t want to be drawn into defending ourselves." Citing acts of violence in Boston and New York, Rehab blamed Islamophobic forces for inciting hate crimes.

“In this age of instant reporting and tweets and blogs, there´s a temptation to latch on to any bit of information, sometimes to jump to conclusions,” said President Obama, in the late evening of April 19, after Dzokhar Tsarnaev was captured alive in Watertown, Mass. (Snip)In an exceptionally well-reported story in the Daily Beast Friday, we read this: "One U.S. intelligence official who was regularly briefed on the investigation told Newsweek that he and his colleagues all but ruled out al Qaeda central or one of its affiliates giving direct and specific instructions for the attack."

Waco - Baylor star Brittney Griner has revealed she’s a lesbian. The Bears center, who was picked No. 1 overall in the recent WNBA Draft (to the Phoenix Mercury) and is considered by many to be an all-time great in women’s college basketball, casually explained her sexual orientation to Sports Illustrated. Griner was asked by SI’s Maggie Gray on the difference between men’s and women’s sports when it comes to acceptance of sexual orientation; why the WNBA has been able to often embrace many lesbians within their sport, while male sports in America still waits on its first publicly gay player.

In 1962, at the Carlyle Hotel in New York, a man “peeled off his clothing and began prancing around his hotel suite.” His bodyguards were cautiously amused, until the man “left the suite and began roaming through the corridor of the Carlyle.” The man in question was delusional, paranoid and suffering a “psychotic break” from the effects of an overdose of methamphetamine. He was also the president of the United States. The reason for John F. Kennedy’s bizarre behavior was that, according to an explosive new book, the president was — unbeknownst to him, at first — a meth addict.
