| Susan Combs, Texas’s comptroller, dropped an interesting piece of news in an interview today: The state’s sales-tax collections this year will exceed $24 billion — an all-time high. Revenues have been up for 30 months in a row now. I have had many tussles with conservatives who in my view take too simplistic a view of the relationship between tax rates and economic growth, but here is a very good example of adding to revenue without raising taxes. Strong growth makes all of the fiscal math a great deal easier.

Oil production in TX had averaged just over 1 million bpd for 2004 thru 2008. The first horizontal oil well with hydraulic fracturing was in late 2008. Growth has been exponential and should pass 2 million bpd by when the numbers are reported for Sept.
With the development of oil has come pipelines, separations facilities, modification of refineries to capitalize on the light sweet crude, and port and rail facilities to move oil or minimally refine crude to full scale refineries inside and outside the country. The really big boom is coming as chemical and plastic companies build world scale plants to use the low cost raw material and energy.

Texas was founded in its independence, by lawyers. Crony capitalism, crony everything-ism existed for the first 40 yrs of statehood, and when the carpetbaggers were run out in 1876, Texas wrote an impossibly unworkable constitution, one so complex that nobody can , as of this date , claim to understand its mysteries. But crooks of all forms are removed of any apprehensions they may have. The citizens decide and that is that. The Legislature meets once every two yrs,....the constitution is so complex it keeps the lawyers busy....and we all live in the heat together, and it's a fine place to live. We still have lots of lawyers....and loser pay lawsuit laws keep things even.

Plus, #4, we have tort reform laws that have put a lid on damage awards.
Yes, oil production has a new life with fracking, but don't forget our ongoing natural gas industry. Those wells keep pumping, too. One of the wells on our ranch is more than 20 years old, still producing.

About $20 billion of that was generated from liquor sales...watching this election cycle has driven a lot of Texans to drink and now we're all "Greeks" at the frat house in the Electoral College of 2012 down here.
Not one national candidate has crossed the Red River all year, so we've been able to skip the lectures of political gasbags like Joe Biden and we just party on! And we are chillin' the bubbly for Nov. 6!

I wish just once Romney would have said in the debate that the way he would increase revenue to the government was to have MORE TAXPAYERS ... more people EARNING money and paying taxes.
Not fewer people paying MORE taxes.
Or how it would be better to have 40% of America not paying income taxes instead of 47% because those 7% of people are now making enough money to pay INCOME TAXES.

I didn't find the article "snotty", "snarky" or inviting an accusation of "shame" on Williamson. Texas has made choices. Yes, everyone might not think sales taxes are the best way, but at least EVERYONE PAYS THEM. There are states with both a state income tax and heavy sales taxes, but Texas is not one of them.

#9 - Sales taxes are the only 'fair' taxes. As Stormy says - Everyone pays - repeat, everyone. Income taxes and the reporting of one's income is heinous...and a waste of time. Schedule this, deduction that, credit if you do this but not that. Get rid of income taxes. Tax us when we spend, not when we earn.

Just to point out that there is fairness in a sales tax, Texas does not tax essential items: food, rent, medical, prescriptions and a few other items. There is a sales tax holiday during the year when you can buy clothes and school supplies that cost less than $100 (I think that is the limit) without any sales tax. So all the illegals in Texas pay some tax. And the legal citizens engaged in illegal activities also pay tax when they buy things.

Comedian and actor Patton Oswalt penned a moving post to his Facebook page Monday night in response to the Boston Marathon bombings that killed three and injured at least 150 people. Oswalt’s touching words immediately went viral. He opened his post bluntly. “Boston. F***ing horrible,” he wrote. “I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, ‘Well, I’ve had it with humanity.’” He continued, “But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.”

"The bigger the baby, the more he charged." That was abortionist Kermit Gosnell´s pricing plan. So when one woman came to him about seven or eight months pregnant, Gosnell charged her $2,500, according to the grand jury report. "Sue," as the grand jury report calls the mother, came to Gosnell´s gory abortion clinic at 9 in the morning. Gosnell´s staff induced labor. At 11 p.m., Sue finally gave birth to her son. Gosnell´s assistant Kareema Cross testified that the boy was 18 or 19 inches long, "nearly the size of her own 6 pound, 6 ounce, newborn daughter."

There were high expectations for Sen. Ted Cruz´s keynote address at CPAC 2013, and he delivered. As a young, passionate Hispanic who happens to be one of the most brilliant and accomplished constitutional experts and Supreme Court lawyers in the U.S. Senate in over half a century, Cruz poses a clear frustration for the left—and some in the Republican establishment as well. Cruz was a rock star at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Whenever anyone mentioned him in their remarks, the utterance was met with applause.

On Wednesday night, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) electrified the crowd at the Coalitions for America’s Weyrich Awards Dinner, named after founder Paul Weyrich. He led off his speech with a dismissive reference to Senator John McCain’s characterization of him as a “wacko bird.” Looking at the crowd, Cruz said, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Cruz led off with a full-on critique of the President’s public relations blitz over sequestration. “2.4 percent cuts were made from your meals,” he joked. He referenced the “emaciated face” of conservative megadonor Foster Friess.

U.S. Catholics who dreamed of an American pope got their wish — in a way — on Wednesday. A South American. Here is a pope who has contended with all the issues of the modern West — gay marriage, abortion, contraception, women´s rights,

When a staffer texted Senator Mike Lee that his friend and colleague Rand Paul was mounting a talking filibuster to demand greater transparency on the administration’s drone policy, Lee did not hesitate. “I alerted my staff that I would need to be going to the floor,” he says in an interview. Lee was the first of Paul’s Republican colleagues to formally join the filibuster, providing some relief by delivering a speech in support. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas would soon follow, bearing news of the tremendous outpouring of public support on social media

Imagine you´re a waitress, out with friends on a night off, when you lose your wallet. Cash, credit cards, driver´s license—all gone. Your bank later informs you that checks are being issued in your name. It´s a pain, but you carry on. Two weeks later, you´re at work when four people walk in and sit in your section. They start ordering drinks. You ask to see their IDs. A woman in the group hands a driver´s license to you. You look down, and it´s yours.

A very courageous fifth-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools has written a scathing critique of the almost comical misery she and her students endured when they participated in a massive February 28 event kicking off Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign. The First Lady’s campaign is an effort to improve (and in some cases, bring back) physical education in American schools. White House officials called the event “a groundbreaking, earth-shattering, awesomely-inspiring day.” Lisa Putnam and her fifth grades most certainly did not experience the event the same way, however.

To read most conservative websites you´d have to believe that Hollywood is the holy mecca of liberal hypocrisy, a swarming hive of limousine liberals, and the indulgence capital of the world. And I do happen to believe the truth of that, an assessment arrived at decades ago and acted upon by my absolute absence in movie theaters for those same decades. For conservatives, going to the movies long ago became a form of self-flagellation where one pays exorbitant prices for admission and confections

They offered up a hero’s welcome for Wood, a decorated World War II veteran. President Obama must have been stunned at the "audacity" of Dr. Benjamin Carson in challenging his core assumptions right to his face in front of thousands of people at the National Prayer Breakfast. Obama is not used to being challenged, especially in public, even if indirectly and without being specifically named. From the look on his face, it was obvious Obama was none too pleased with Carson´s message or with his "presumptuousness" in presenting it in that forum, while he had to sit still and -- remain silent.

The unfailing reverence on the American right for Ronald Reagan is understandable. He was the only exemplar of modern conservatism to win the White House, and unlike liberal icons such as Roosevelt or Johnson or Obama, he presided over an economic boom and became beloved by voters not normally drawn to his party. No wonder that Reagan, long before his death in 2004, attained mythical status in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. But that myth has become a burden for the modern GOP. It has bound Reagan’s followers on the right to policies and positions that were

Michelle Obama did not walk the E!-streamed red carpet before tonight´s White House Correspondents´ Dinner — she was already at home, of course — so our first glimpse of her black Monique Lhuillier gown came later, once dinner started. And damn does she look good. This is a sexier look on her than usual, with a sheer lace panel over her decolletage and a molded bustier-style top. She very wisely chose a dress that photographs well while she´s sitting down, Schiaparelli-style, with elaborate beading along her collarbone and fitted cap sleeves that flatter her arms. Washington - America´s blacks voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time, reflecting a deeply polarized presidential election in which blacks strongly supported Barack Obama while many whites stayed home. Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly, according to an analysis conducted for The Associated Press. Census data and exit polling show that whites and blacks will remain

Unlike you, federal government officials are immune from charges of fraud. The executive branch, vested with all of the government’s prosecutorial authority and discretion, is not going to investigate its own operatives for carrying out its own mendacious policies. That is the story of last week’s Boston Marathon bombing and the frantic efforts of the bombers, the brothers Tsarnaev, to evade capture, shoot it out with police (two of whom they killed), and — we’re now told — detonate more bombs in Times Square. The Times Square non-attack is quite interesting.

President Obama´s weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. Our top priority as a nation must be growing the economy, creating good jobs, and rebuilding opportunity for the middle class. But two months ago, Congress allowed a series of automatic budget cuts to fall across the federal government that would do the opposite. In Washington-speak, these cuts were called the “sequester.” It was a bad idea then. And as the country saw this week, it’s a bad idea now. Because of these reckless cuts, there are parents whose kids just got kicked out of Head Start programs scrambling for a solution.

WASHINGTON — Russian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the Boston bombing suspects vaguely discussed jihad with his mother, officials said Saturday, days after the U.S. government finally received details about the call. In another conversation, the mother of now-dead bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, officials said. The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family. The surviving suspect accused of the Boston Marathon bombings tweeted in the aftermath of the terrorist attack, joking about the fate of victims of the explosions. Dzhokhar ´Jahar´ Tsarnaev, 19, took to the social media website and engaged in banter with a friend making light of the deadly explosions that killed three and injured more than 260. In one of his many tweets, the college sophomore wrote, ´Lol those people are cooked´ likely in reference to a since deleted conversation about the events unfolding in Boston.
