Police: Winnsboro woman
set fire to herself

Shreveport Times [LA], by Michael Doughty*

Original Article

Posted By:PChristopher, 10/24/2012 6:23:10 AM

In the aftermath of a horrific incident in which a 20-year-old Winnsboro woman was severely burned, nearly 130 residents of the tight-knit community attended a candlelight vigil Tuesday night to offer prayers and support to Sharmeka Moffitt and her family. The vigil took place hours after investigators said Moffitt lied to police when she claimed three unidentified assailants in white hoodies set her on fire.

Remember this one from a couple of days ago? What I can't fathom is why the president of the local NAACP says they still stand behind her. You just can't fix stupid, I guess.

I don't think stupid has anything to do with it. Sharpton still stands behind Twanna Brawley. Still maintains that her web of lies was not a hoax, even though it's been proven over and over again.

Stupid doesn't enter into it. It's money. Shaprtonn is still dining out on Brawley. The NAACP will spin this web of lies into a money raiser. Bet on it. Before it's over, the cops will be the bad guys. Bet on it.

Two very bazaar things in this case. First, a real serious attempt to harm oneself (setting oneself on fire isn't as controllable as saying one was almost hung or beat up, etc.). Two, the family thanked the police and apologized. One now wonders if mental health issues that were chronic and well known are part of this. Or she was inspired by Richard Pryor, I don't know.

I remember the thread from a couple of days ago or maybe it was yesterday. No matter. I remember thinking that most of the LDotters were cautiously crying foul. In other words, we didn't buy the story.

Hope the LDotters have as much prescience when it comes to November 6.

FTA: ''We hurt for the victim''.

There was no ''victim''; this was self-immolation by a black woman who described her attackers as three men wearing white hoods or hats: she blamed white men.

Yes, I remember this story. What is so comforting about this for me, at least, is that the family's statement was 100% in support of law enforcement and their handling of the case.

This young woman obviously has psychological problems, of which it appears that the family is well aware.

I hope they ultimately get her the help she needs. And, I'll add this...I'd rather her take her craziness out on herself than scores of innocent people as happened in that movie theater in Aurora, CO.

The names of the six-member jury panel that acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin have been made public for the first time, after a new court order, records show. Circuit Judge Debra Nelson, who had previously ordered the jurors´ identifying information be kept confidential, granted access to the names in a ruling March 21. Zimmerman´s defense asked the judge in June to keep the names secret until six months after the verdict. (Snip) Attempts to reach the jurors by phone and in-person Thursday were unsuccessful.

Senators blocked President Obama’s nominee to lead the Justice Department’s civil rights division Wednesday in a bipartisan filibuster, with opponents saying his history defending a convicted cop-killer in the Supreme Court made him a poor choice. The defeat of Debo P. Adegbile, who as an attorney for the NAACP backed appeals by former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, is a major blow to Mr. Obama. Democrats changed the rules last year to overcome filibusters with just 50 votes, but Majority Leader Harry Reid couldn’t even muster all of his own troops Wednesday.

President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)
