| "Paul Ryan Can't Lose," a 5,000-word cover story by Mark Leibovich, the New York Times magazine's chief national correspondent, conformed to the writer's history of cynical, unsympathetic profiles of Republican candidates. According to Leibovich, Newt Gingrich is "among the more divisive political figures of recent decade," always threatening to become "Nasty Newt," former vice president Al Gore is a "compelling" "pop culture icon." Offered the fat target of Vice President Joe Biden, Leibovich instead buttered him up. Yet former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney didn't escape: "Critics deride him as a Prince of Darkness

The Department of Transitional Assistance has released to lawmakers new details of the government money received by the Marathon bombing suspects and their families. As the Herald reported earlier this week, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received benefits as children, when their parents, Anzor and Zubeidat Tsarnaev, were beneficiaries. “The Tsarnaev parents were eligible to receive benefits as legal, non-citizen residents who were granted asylum status and met the basic eligibility criteria for DTA, including household income levels, presence of dependent children and other factors,” said the letter from DTA interim commissioner Stacey Monahan to David Linsky, Chairman of the

When the new $100 bills come out in October 2013, they´ll feature even more images related to Philadelphia. Local legend Ben Franklin will still grace the front, or obverse, but his image will be bigger and won´t be surrounded by an oval. The new $100 bill´s long-delayed release date is now Oct. 8, 2013. The bill will feature all sorts of familiar Philadelphia images, starting, of course, with local legend Ben Franklin. He´s why C-notes are also called Benjamins. The Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell, part of two new security features, join a new view of Independence Hall.

Tom Brokaw declined his invitation to this year´s White House Correspondents’ Dinner because of Lindsay Lohan. “Somewhere along the line, it began to freewheel out of control," the renowned anchorman told Politico about the celeb-filled soiree, "and the breaking point for me was Lindsay Lohan.” The trouble-making actress was invited as a guest of Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren at the 2012 dinner. Page Six’s Cindy Adams recalled how Lohan disappeared a few times to the bathroom for a cigarette and tipped a bathroom attendant a crumpled $100 and said, “You’re too old to be doing this.”

The landing gear from one of the hijacked planes that smashed into the World Trade Center has turned up nearly 12 years later — wedged behind the controversial “Ground Zero Mosque.” The piece of the doomed plane was found just two blocks north of the Lower Manhattan site where the Freedom Tower is rising to replace the Twin Towers. The first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, crashed into the north tower at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001. United Airlines Flight 175 slammed into the south tower exactly 17 minutes later. It was not immediately clear which plane

An interesting moment from today´s quick Oval Office press availability with President Obama: PRESIDENT OBAMA: Okay. Q Mr. President, why has the red line been crossed --PRESIDENT OBAMA: You guys all have the same question? Q Yes. Q You know that they are -- PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hold on a second, miss. One at a time. What we have right now is an intelligence assessment. And as I said, knowing that potentially chemical weapons have been used inside of Syria doesn’t tell us when they were used, how they were used. The weekend of festivities surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner got off to a rocking start Thursday, as Neuprofile and FinePoint PR teamed up with Rock the Vote for “The Spin Room” party. A sea of little black dresses and suits and ties packed the swank Heist lounge in downtown Washington at the kickoff to the annual action-packed social event weekend. As a D.J. pumped Britney Spears tunes, the crowd of D.C. movers and shakers sipped jalapeno-infused tequila and sported red, white and blue wristwatches given out as party favors. BERLIN— They were feasts of sublime asparagus — laced with fear. And for more than half a century, Margot Woelk kept her secret hidden from the world, even from her husband. Then, a few months after her 95th birthday, she revealed the truth about her wartime role: Adolf Hitler´s food taster. Woelk, then in her mid-twenties, spent two and a half years as one of 15 young women who sampled Hitler´s food to make sure it wasn´t poisoned before it was served to the Nazi leader in his "Wolf´s Lair," the heavily guarded command center

During a speech this morning at the Planned Parenthood gala, President Obama vowed he would never allow Republicans to cut taxpayer funds for the abortion provider. “If there’s one thing the past few years have shown is that Planned Parenthood isn’t going anywhere,” Obama said as the crowd cheered. “It’s not going anywhere today, It’s not going anywhere tomorrow.” Obama was wildly received by the audience when he entered the room - the first sitting president to address the nation’s largest abortion provider. “Everybody sit down,” Obama said sheepishly. “You’re making me blush.”

After flooding filled the basement vault of a Northfield bank, William Hielscher arrived to inventory the contents of his mother´s safe-deposit box — one of a few hundred that had been exposed to floodwaters several days earlier. Chase bank employees led him past a security guard, behind a floor-to-ceiling plastic curtain and down some stairs into a humid, rank-smelling room. There, workers wearing disposable gloves gingerly drained dirty water from his safe-deposit box, then photographed the contents under the watchful eye of bank employees. Hielscher, a lawyer, described the ordeal as more emotional than expected as he looked at

Joe Scarborough is a gun control advocate who considers himself the sane type of conservative — a point he makes clear on a nearly daily basis. Last night, Fox News host Sean Hannity, alongside guest Brent Bozell, spent a segment criticizing Scarborough for both his gun stance and self-professed conservatism. This morning, Scarborough acknowledged the critics in a rather characteristic way. Earlier in the discussion, Scarborough followed up on the scolding he gave Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (N-ND) for her “pathetic” vote against expanded background checks. After getting off air, he recalled with an amused laugh,

LONDON- Former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill will be featured on a British banknote set to begin circulation in 2016, the Bank of England said. A portrait of Churchill, adapted from a Dec. 30, 1941, photograph taken by Yousuf Karsh, and his famous declaration "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat" will be featured on the five-pound banknote, the BBC reported Friday. Churchill will replace social reformer Elizabeth Fry on the banknote. Bank of England Gov. Sir Mervyn King announced the new banknote from Churchill´s former home of Chartwell, in Westerham, Kent.

"As long as we´ve got to fight to make sure women have access to quality, affordable health care, and as long as we´ve got to fight to protect a woman´s right to make her own choices about her own health, I want you to know that you´ve also got a president who´s going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way," said Obama. The Patrick administration clamped down the lid yesterday on Herald requests for details of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s government benefits, citing the dead terror mastermind’s right to privacy. Across the board, state agencies flatly refused to provide information about the taxpayer-funded lifestyle for the 26-year-old man and his brother and accused accomplice Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. On EBT card status or spending, state welfare spokesman Alec Loftus would only say Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter received benefits that ended in 2012. He declined further comment.

Two unnamed U.S. officials have told the Associated Press that the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard. The report contradicts the Boston police department´s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev´s capture on Friday - after commissioner Ed Davies described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured. The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat - another claim contradicted by the latest revelations. Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire

During an April 24 address to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), Attorney General Eric Holder told the crowd that “creating a pathway to earned citizenship” is a critical element of any comprehensive immigration reform plan. He said that establishing legal status for the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants is a “matter of civil and human rights.” “Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is essential,” Holder said to applause. “The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumented by creating a mechanism for

Since the Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured, there’s been quite a debate over his Miranda rights and how to treat him — given that he’s a United States citizen. An Associated Press report out this morning is sure to add fuel to the fire. As soon as he was read his Miranda rights, it says, Tsarnaev stopped talking. The report notes that Tsarnaev was read his rights 16 hours after his interrogation had began. Then, he fell silent: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office entered his

Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed. That Obama assumed Americans would want an iconic photo of him privately mourning the victims of the bombings was emblematic of a kind of hubris that has enveloped the president and his White House as the president commences his second term.

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. UConn basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the logo

Progressive publication Mother Jones has revealed yet another secretly-recorded video of a Republican saying something newsworthy. This time, it’s of GOP pollster and frequent Fox News analyst Frank Luntz remarking that Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and other right-wing talk radio hosts are “problematic” for the Republican Party’s efforts to reach out to other demographics and to fight the polarization of politics. The video was recorded on an iPhone while Luntz delivered a College Republicans-sponsored speech at the University of Pennsylvania earlier this week. Most of his speech reportedly consisted of his thoughts on how words matter — for

Are you alarmed by the counterterrorism failures increasingly evident as we learn more about the Boston terror attack? Don’t be. Former CIA director Michael Hayden has helpfully explained, “This tragedy is the new normal.” Are you surprised that a whole city was ordered to “shelter in place” as one “knockoff jihadi,” in Vice President Biden’s term, roamed the streets? Don’t be. It’s the new normal. Are you shocked by the Obama administration’s dissembling in response to terror attacks in Benghazi? Don’t be naïve. It’s the new normal. Are you worried that the president proclaims “red lines” to deter dictators

As Obamacare was winding its way through the Senate in 2009, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) slipped in an amendment requiring that members of Congress, and their staff, enroll in Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges. The idea was simple: that if Congress was going to impose Obamacare upon the country, it should have to experience what it is imposing firsthand. But now, word comes that Congress is quietly seeking to rescind that provision of the law, because members fear that staffers who face higher insurance costs will leave the Hill. The news has sparked outrage

The one clear thing that came out of last week´s chaotic activity in Boston, Massachusetts is that real reporters were missing. For that matter, they´ve been missing since last year´s attack in Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Gosnell abortion trial, gun control debates, immigration and then the Boston Marathon bombings, television news reporting has become positively painful to watch. The First Amendment to the Constitution grants freedom of the press but this was supposed to endow it with a responsibility to be the people´s watchdog. The modern Fourth Estate represented by the mainstream media has made a mockery of this privilege.
