Obama Strikes Out in VA: 'Battleship,' 'Horses and Bayonets,' Sequester Walk Back

| The defining moments of Monday's foreign policy debate came halfway through the evening, when President Obama struck himself out--especially in Virginia--with three pitches aimed at Mitt Romney that boomeranged. These ill advised lines will come back to haunt him over the final two weeks of the campaign: ROMNEY: Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285. We're headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. That's unacceptable to me.

That was probably the most condescending moment of a long four years of condescension from the Empty Chair, and a low point for the peevish president.

"Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, (emphasis added to second strike) because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."
>> Of course, BHO ignores that the oceans aren't getting any smaller. Further, the reduction in the size of the US Navy has not only emboldened piracy from the Horn of Africa to the South China Sea, but it has also emboldened China to assert its naval presence in Asia against Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and any other potential challengers.
In addition, those aircraft carriers BHO talks about, we have far fewer of them than we did 10 years ago, and we fly far fewer strike/fighter aircraft off of them.

Everyone knows that Obie the community activist knows nothing, zero, about the military.
He probably had to study hardest on that for last night's debate.
It showed. Once he started his various memorized recitations, he was loathe to stop because he was afraid he'd lose his place in his canned narrative.

I can understand in the heat of debate where POTUS can come across as snarky and disrespectful to the challenger. But since I like Romney better, I'll make a snarky remark to POTUS:
1. Battleships go ON the water. 2. Submarines go IN the water. 3. No naval vessel that I know of goes UNDER the water.

This moment needs to be part of an ad. It's so fully of nonsense and dripping with condescension for, not only Romney, but disdain for our Navy too.
The Democrats are loving it today, but they should wish it never happened. Maybe Karl Rove's group has the stones to do it.

At the Alfred E. Smith dinner last week, Romney opened his line of psychological warfare on Obama. Last night he aptly reminded Obama that he (Romney) had gotten deep inside that skull of arrogance and false pride. You could see the look on Obama's face that told Romney he had won.
Watch Romney "fire" Obama-Mao sweetly...and Obama knows he has been fired as he stumbles about trying to convince us he should stay "on the job" at the White House for another 4 years.
Me, I've been miserable for these past four years...I don't want to go on like this for another four...do you?

Axlerod, the son of communists, is so excited about the whole 1920's, backward, strategy that I'm sure they thought they had a winner with the horses and bayonets line. As usual, it is all just another theory like expensive gasoline will shift America to a bright, 'green' future that 'saves' the planet and provides millions of great jobs. All it requires is four more years and tens of trillions of new dollars.

I wonder what Obama was thinking when he mentioned subs and carriers. Neither one is a new development. Subs were at sea before Romney's 1917 benchmark. (Do you suppose Obama has heard about the Lusitania?) And carriers have been in the world's navies for what, seventy-five years? So what's the game-changer?
Obama was probably briefed on something, and muddled it.

President Obama kicked off the week in Connecticut with a rallying cry for new gun control measures hand-in-hand with Sandy Hook parents. This afternoon, Obama sat down in the Oval Office with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel — who, with a military, civilian, and contractor work force on edge about their jobs, is tasked with unveiling what could be a punishing presidential budget for the Pentagon tomorrow. Over at the Senate tonight, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed cloture on the motion to proceed to the gun-control package, which means

President Obama will unveil his 2014 spending plan Wednesday, 65 days late and several trillion dollars short, by Republican standards, of effectively reining in the national debt. But the more relevant fact about the White House budget may be the yawning political void into which it is about to fall on Capitol Hill. Administration officials say their plan offers a path to compromise, a centrist course that avoids the extreme spending cuts of the House Republican budget as well as the $1 trillion tax hike endorsed last month by Senate Democrats. The president’s proposal contains the same set of policies

It seems very odd that President Obama has made gun control the signature issue of his second term, so far. He can’t possibly achieve any significant legislation; a few tweaks to the background check system, maybe, but there is no chance of getting any meaningful gun control through the House. The House Democrats aren’t even trying. So it also seems strange that all eyes are on the Senate, where Harry Reid will unveil some sort of gun legislation–no one knows what, exactly–on Thursday. The party’s left-wing base is lining up behind the bill, sight unseen.

In a poll conducted by PoliceOne, a majority of law enforcement personnel said universal background checks, "assault weapons" bans, and "high capacity" magazine bans do not make police safer and will not lower violent crime. Armed citizens, on the other hand, do make a positive difference. In the poll of 15,000 law enforcement professionals, 71% of respondents said an "assault weapons" ban would have zero impact on violent crime. Of those surveyed, 95.7% said the same of a "high capacity" magazine ban, and 79.7% said the same in response to a question on universal background checks.

He asked the senators to consider how their actions are being viewed by the international community: “In sophisticated capitals and in less-sophisticated capitals, they all reported on Sandy Hook, they all reported on Aurora.” “What do you think is being said today in those capitals about us?”

Margaret Thatcher captured Americans’ hearts and minds in a way few other foreign leaders have done, and much of that was because of the symbiotic relationship she had with President Reagan — a relationship that in many ways mirrored the storied “special” friendship between the two countries. Mrs. Thatcher, who died Monday at age 87, was a tough-talking maverick who was bullish on the promise of the U.S. as a force on the international stage. Those traits appealed to Americans weary of the 1970s malaise and eager to hear reasons to believe in themselves. “She had the perfect balance between

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
