| On the day that Barry Diller and Tina Brown announced the death of Newsweek the print magazine, a memorial service for Bob Hughes took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Hughes, who died this summer at age 74, was for more than 30 years the art critic of Time, and as the garlands of obituaries attested, he came to be regarded as the finest art critic of his generation. Print publications have been shooting themselves in the foot for a long time. The lib base, welfare queens and college students don't read newspapers or news magazines. Those that do are now unemployed and cutting back on extras: magazine subscriptions and newspapers. The bad economy that caused the unemployment was due to the very lib principles that these magazines and newspapers supported. Life is funny that way.

Ann Coulter said it best a few years back: Conservatives read; Liberals don't. TIME lost most of what remained of its Luce-era authority, power and readership after it was acquired by Warner Brothers, and was turned into yet another Hollywood Left-wing slickster publication. As for Newsweek, it always languished in TIME's shadow as the "liberal alternative". When TIME completed its political 180 degree turn, there was no further need for Newsweek. Badda boom, as John Gotti said.

Good insight by the writer into why Newsweek, Time etc used to be popular:
... the kind of reader that made Hughes [and by extension, magazines like Time and Newsweek] successful has pretty much disappeared: the aspirational reader who wanted to appear smart about art and music and science...
...These readers yearned for authority, and [sought out] experts who had the gift of popularizing a difficult subject
IOW, the Big Media no longer dictate to us who the "experts" are.
Thank God for the internet -- we can now find information, from a vast array of original sources as well as interpretations, and form our own opinions.

Newsweek used to be a great magazine; it was the magazine I always bought at the news stand when I traveled. Like all liberals, they believe they can spew their vitriol against the right, and liberals actually believe there should be no consequences, no matter how untrue their stories. Well, many of us just quit buying; most of us could not stomach the one-sided lies and untruths. It is good to see Newsweek has died a timely death.

At the same time the Senate has cut a deal on gun control by, er, making the status quo slightly more muscular, the Gang of Eight has reached a deal in principle on immigration. How many federal agencies does it take to do catfish safety inspections? At least three, according to the Government Accountability Office, which on Tuesday released its 2013 report on fragmentation and duplication of federal programs. This year´s report -- there were two previous editions of the report first requested by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. -- documents an estimated $95 billion in duplicative programs that waste precious tax dollars. That brings the three-year total of potential savings documented by GAO to $295 billion. A new CNN/ORC International poll found President Obama´s overall approval rating has ticked up to 51 percent but ratings have fallen on his handling of the key issues on his agenda: immigration, guns, and the deficit.
