| He does not speak on the stump or appear in television ads. Campaign audiences rarely hear his name. But aside from President Obama and Mitt Romney, no one has shaped the 2012 election more than George W. Bush — on the economy and on the foreign policy issues in the spotlight during the final presidential debate on Monday. For Mr. Romney, the battered reputation of Mr. Bush, the last Republican president, represents a burden to minimize in a tight race for the White House. The two have not appeared together this year.

Pres. Bush 43 was left alone in a forest of jackals for two years. He is smart to maintain the low profile while this Obamagasm plays itself out. Romney doesn't need to rely on a past president to prop him up,unlike his opponent.

"the greatest U.S. president of the 21st century..."
It's very early in the century, and the competition isn't very stiff for "greatest" at this point. For such an impactful "great" president, it's odd that GWB gets all the credit and no blame, often for the same acts. It would be interesting for him to run in '04 on a platform of an unfinished/unresolved war on terror that resembles nation building, and an economic crash (that we all know is all Barney Frank's fault). History will not be kind to Bush 43, nor to Obama I.

We've seen and heard plenty from former Democrat Presidents (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton) and presidential candidates (John F. Kerry, Michael Dukakis), but little from G.H. W. Bush, and nothing from G. W. Bush (whom the Democrats continue to malign maliciously). Why? Because whatever else you might say about the Bush family, they have CLASS.

Subprime mortgages causes the collapse, not tax cuts or the war in Iraq.
Bush gets some of the blame for his "ownership society" thing. But he was not an underwriter, and was unable to reign in Fannie Mae because of Bawny Frank.

George W. Bush recently criticized the Romney campaign and said he was skeptical about Romney's chances. It was reported in a NY Magazine article about spoiler Jeb Bush. This was reported in mainstream outlets. I never want to see or hear another word from anyone in that family. W. favored Hillary Clinton over McCain-no matter if he denies it now, it's on the record. Jeb Bush's greatest claim to fame is not being able to deliver the state of Florida to his own brother in 2000 at the height of his (Jeb's) alleged popularity. So, have a nice life, Bush people.

#10. Don't believe it. Log back in and show me. On another subject, the NYT took the anniversary of 9/11 this year to slam Bush for missing clues to the 2001 attacks in his daily intelligence briefings. That canard was shot down years ago. Unlike Obama, Bush actually took daily intelligence briefings. I suppose Romney could say he'd reinstate that presidential practice.

#5 nails it. Indeed history will not be kind to George the Compassionate, arguably one of the most colossally incompetent Presidents ever. He is the reason Obama is Potus and the Tea Party was formed. Stone cold reality but don't tell his fans. Virtually every one of his policy actions was an unmitigated disaster, be it his reckless spending and w/an R Congress for six years by the way, the Iraq War which is a testament to ineptitude, his bailouts of autos and banks ("I gave up my free market principles to save the free market") or his immigration fandango ("They're jes tryin to feed their families"). Romney would be well advised to avoid Bush, all of them, like the flesh eating plague.

While standing on the 1100 block of Bergen Street, a teenager approached the 77-year-old James and snatched a gold chain from his neck, his son, John Sharpe James, said. "It happened so quick - the kid came up from behind," the younger James said. "He thought somebody was joking with him." The account was confirmed by two police officials, one of whom said the former mayor was put in a choke-hold. James was not injured, his son said

In her remarkable life, Margaret Thatcher achieved what Hillary Rodham Clinton still wants (or at least what the pundits say she wants): She became the first female leader of her country, and she did it in such a determined way that her sex was almost an afterthought. In many respects, the two women are profoundly different. Thatcher, who died Monday at 87, was a self-described "conviction politician" and arch-conservative who channeled Milton Friedman and bonded fiercely with "Ronnie" Reagan, her great pal and partner on the world stage as the Cold War came to an end.

And the archbishop of Detroit, Allen Vigneron, said Sunday that Catholics who receive Communion while advocating gay marriage would "logically bring shame for a double-dealing that is not unlike perjury." The comments of Vigneron and Edward Peters, who teaches Catholic canon law at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, are part of a polarizing discussion about gay marriage

The U.S. has been denied direct access to the only publicly known suspect in custody in connection with the Benghazi terror attack, Fox News has learned, with U.S. interrogators still unable to sit in the same room as the Egypt-held prisoner to ask questions. Abu Ahmed, also known as Mohammed Jamal, is suspected of establishing Islamist training camps in Eastern Libya where militants who took part in the Sept. 11 Benghazi terrorist attack were able to train. Ahmed is not suspected of directly taking part in the attack which left four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, dead.

For the past five months, the Republican message on foreign policy message has been defined by a single word: Benghazi. Ever since the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. compound in that Libyan city, Republicans have obsessed over the episode. Mitt Romney made Benghazi a favorite talking point in the 2012 campaign home stretch. More recently, Republicans have invoked Benghazi to shoot down one would-be cabinet nominee, Susan Rice, and delay two others, Chuck Hagel and John Brennan. They have dragged a parade of administration officials, including Hillary Clinton

TIMBUKTU, Mali - One of the last things the bearded fighters did before leaving this city was to drive to the market where traders lay their carpets out in the sand. The al-Qaida extremists bypassed the brightly-colored, high-end synthetic floor coverings and stopped their pickup truck in front of a man selling more modest mats woven from desert grass, priced at $1.40 apiece. There they bought two bales of 25 mats each, and asked him to bundle them on top of the car, along with a stack of sticks.

A Planned Parenthood spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that the agency plans to close two more of its 21 Iowa clinics. The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
