| KING CITY, Calif. -- California's central valley was jiggled by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake Sunday, days after the anniversary of the big Bay Area quake of 1987, seismologists said. Sunday's shaker occurred shortly before midnight PDT and was centered outside King City, about 160 miles south-southeast of Sacramento, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no reports of damage or injury in the rural area. The USGS said the quake occurred along California's famed San Andreas Fault, which triggered the famed 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the Loma Prieta quake in Oct. 17, 1989, which killed 64 people

5.3 isn't that bad by California standards.

I haven't checked the proposed route for Obie and Jer's high speed rail, but I seem to recall its going through the Central Valley.
We don't need it, we can't afford it, and this would be a lousy place to put it.

Members of an al Qaeda-linked group in Syria executed a 15-year-old boy in front of his parents after kidnapping and torturing him for making disrespectful statements about Islam´s Prophet Muhammad, a human rights group in the region claimed. Mohammad Qataa was seized Saturday in Aleppo by gunmen with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — formerly known as the Nusra Front — after he was overheard saying during an argument with another, “Even if the Prophet Muhammad comes down [from heaven], I will not become a believer,” according to Reuters. The captors displayed the bloody and beaten boy

Facebook Inc. (FB) co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, will give Newark Mayor Cory Booker some help in his U.S. Senate bid, which the New Jersey Democrat plans to formally announce today. Booker, 44, will enter the special-election race to replace Senator Frank Lautenberg, a five-term Democrat who died at age 89 on June 3. The mayor plans events in Newark and Willingboro Township, according to Kevin Griffis, a spokesman. Zuckerberg, who hasn’t declared a party affiliation, held his first political fundraiser on Feb. 14, when he welcomed New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

WASHINGTON — Emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases are growing at such a rate that the world will probably exceed a safe limit in average global temperatures by the end of the century and veer into a higher temperature zone that would profoundly damage economic growth and most other aspects of life, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency. Emissions of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide, need to stay below certain levels so that they do not push average global temperatures higher than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), scientists and policymakers have warned.

New York City´s health department released a report Monday showing that diabetes-related deaths in the five boroughs reached a record high of 5,695 in 2011. The findings come roughly three months after Mayor Michael Bloomberg´s administration suffered a setback to its efforts to ban the sale of sugary sodas bigger than 16 ounces in movie theaters and restaurants. The mayor´s administration argued that the restrictions would help reduce obesity and other health issues, but the proposal faced a fierce blowback from restaurant owners and exhibitors who accused Bloomberg of operating a "nanny state" and jeopardizing their businesses.

Democrats continue to try to dismiss the evidence that Obamacare will dramatically increase the cost of insurance for people who buy it on their own. But on Thursday, the Ohio Department of Insurance announced that, based on the rates submitted by insurers to date, the average individual-market health insurance premium in 2014 will come in around $420, “representing an increase of 88 percent” relative to 2013. “We have warned of these increases,” said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor in a statement. “Consumers will have fewer choices and pay much higher premiums for their health insurance starting in 2014.”

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — George Kasimos has almost finished repairing flood damage to his waterfront home, but his Superstorm Sandy nightmare is far from over. Like thousands of others in the hardest-hit coastal stretches of New Jersey and New York, his life is in limbo as he waits to see if tough new coastal rebuilding rules make it just too expensive for him to stay. That’s because the federal government’s newly released advisory flood maps have put his Toms River home in the most vulnerable area — the “velocity zone.” If that sticks, he’d have to jack his house up

More than a dozen male employees working for the Roslagsbanan train services in the Swedish capital have been wearing skirts in order to keep cool. One of the drivers, Martin Åkersten, explained that temperatures can hit 95F (35C) in the train cab during the summer. Uniform regulations by the train company Arriva state that skirts or long trousers are acceptable. At a meeting last year, drivers were told that shorts were not allowed. They have given their blessing to the men wearing skirts however. "To say anything else would be discrimination," Thomas Hedenius, the communications head

FRESNO, Calif. — On a warm spring day, farmworker Cristina Melendez was bedridden and unable to make her way back into the asparagus fields of central California for the kind of backbreaking work she´s done since childhood. The 36-year-old mother of seven was desperate. Her bank account had been at zero for months, the refrigerator was nearly empty, and she didn´t have enough to cover the rent. Lacking health insurance, Melendez couldn´t see a doctor or afford medication, so her illness dragged on — and another day came and went without work or pay. A native of Mexico

WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. Internet companies that want to resist government demands to hand over customer data for intelligence investigations have few legal options, due to the classified nature of such probes and a court review process shrouded in secrecy. Google Inc, Facebook Inc and Microsoft Corp are among the big U.S. technology companies that were outed this week as key sources of data for the National Security Agency (NSA), under a surveillance program referred to inside the spy agency as Prism. While the companies have uniformly denied knowledge of Prism

Shaw appeared in court in Nashville when Child Support Services sued on behalf of the mothers for tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid child support over the years. "I was young and ambitious and I love women," Shaw, 33, told WTVF-TV. He said that when he was young he wanted 50 kids, but he´s ready to get "fixed" now. Shaw said he´s proud of all his children

"They could pay off the Triads," says Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower interviewed by the Guardian in his Hong Kong hideout. Meaning: the CIA could use a proxy to kill him for revealing that Barack Obama has presided over an unimaginable – to the ordinary citizen – expansion of the Federal government´s powers of surveillance over anyone. Libertarians and conspiracy theorists of both Left and Right will never forget this moment. Already we have Glenn Beck hailing Snowden on Twitter: Courage finally. Real. Steady. Thoughtful. Transparent. Willing to accept the consequences. Inspire w/Malice toward none.#edwardsnowden Snowden will be a Right-wing

In a Spanish-language interview Sunday with the network Univision, Sen. Marco Rubio, the leading Republican on the Gang of Eight comprehensive immigration reform group, made his strongest statement yet that legalization of the nation’s 11 million currently illegal immigrants must happen before any new border security or internal enforcement measures are in place, and will in no way be conditional on any security requirements. “Let’s be clear,” Rubio said. “Nobody is talking about preventing the legalization. The legalization is going to happen. That means the following will happen: First comes the legalization.

he Obama administration has taken a first step toward opening a criminal investigation into the purported leaking of classified documents related to the federal government tracking Americans´ phone calls and emails, a source familiar with the high-level discussions told Fox News on Saturday. The source said a “criminal report has been filed,” which begins the process. The FBI and Justice Department would likely be involved in such a probe, which is expected to focus on British and U.S. newspapers including The Guardian.

That didn’t take long. The official who leaked top-secret information about the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs to fight terrorism has now come forward in the pages of the Guardian to revel in his role “as one of America’s most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning.” Edward Snowden is described as a 29-year-old high school dropout who worked (ironically) on computer security for the CIA before becoming a highly paid contractor at Booz Allen, making a reported $200,000 a year working for the National Security Agency in Hawaii. The Guardian story presents him as a martyr

(CHICAGO) There is a lot of reaction on WLS this morning to the identification of the man who leaked information last week, about the U.S. Government’s secret surveillance program, which allows the National Security Agency to monitor the phone calls and emails of Americans. Former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft on WLS that he thinks admitted leaker Edward Snowden, is guilty of treason: "Number one, this man is a liar. He took an oath to keep the secrets that were shared with him so he could do his job.

Mickey Kaus has produced an excellent, easy-to-use “pocket guide” to the reasons why the Schumer-Rubio immigration reform bill (S.744) is fraudulent. Kaus catalogues the provisions of the bill that promise tough future enforcement, etc. but don’t do what they pretend to do: “Multiple triggers” — Legalization is immediate. DHS just has to write border “plan.” The most any “triggers” can possibly do is delay green cards and citizenship. “90% effectiveness” — If not reached, triggers only toothless commission “Pay back taxes” — Only if already “assessed” by IRS (unlikely). Newly legalized may instead get refunds. “Learn English” — Only need to sign up

The New England Patriots will sign Tim Tebow, league sources told ESPN. The Patriots are signing Tebow, who is expected to participate in the team´s mandatory minicamp Tuesday, as a quarterback, according to sources. The move reunites Tebow with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the Broncos' head coach when Denver traded into the first round to draft the Heisman Trophy winner in 2010. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick often has spoken with admiration for Tebow's versatility, intelligence and character. Belichick covets what he has described as tough, smart, versatile football players.

For several months, the Benghazi scandal lay dormant, apparently forgiven and forgotten. Then, inexplicably, it reared its ugly head when Congressmen Ron Johnson and Jason Chaffetz smelled Obama´s blood in the water. After feigning affliction with the flu, and then ostensibly tumbling down a carpeted stairwell resulting in an unconfirmed concussion, then-Secretary of State Clinton was finally forced to testify before Congress. Clinton´s desperate attempt to put the Benghazi scandal to rest with her now-infamous impassioned declaration -- "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

As the IRS scandal continues to take shape and the massive overreach of one of the most powerful agencies in Big Government becomes even more apparent, it becomes frightening to think this same agency will soon be heavily involved in your personal healthcare situation. What happens next with the man responsible for leaking a trove of National Security Agency documents to the Guardian rests in the hands of two countries who could decide to send him back to the U.S. with express shipping, or to keep him as a global bargaining chip. Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old American defense contractor, revealed himself as the man responsible for the Guardian´s string of NSA leaks Sunday afternoon.
