Projected impact: 18 miles from MacDill Air Force Base. The Strategic Air Command on Oct. 28, 1962, was on the highest alert in history: DEFCON 2, one step short of imminent war. The president and Pentagon feared a surprise attack, and that's exactly what the missile rocketing toward Tampa appeared to be. But none of the command's bombers or missiles was launched. Fifty years have passed since the Cuban Missile Crisis, which was the coldest point on the Cold War--so cold, in fact, that nuclear war which is the hottest of wars--was one miscalculation away.
This article pays special attention to the multitudes of responsible people on the ground in October 1962 who massed aircraft and nuclear armements so they could be delivered, if necessary, to their targets in Cuba and the USSR.

My father was sitting on a tarmac in a plane with engines running, waiting for the order to go mid-air refuel nuclear armed bombers -- several flights of which had no recall codes.
It was a very near thing... and not something to forget.

Ah hem. "...risked being shot." I think it was the air force and their logistical ground support who risked "shout."
In 1966 the United States had an arsenal of some 31,000 nuclear and thermonuclear warheads. The USSR had 41,000 as of 1986. Did you know that Obama wants to cut our stock (currently slightly below 10,000) to 300? Pakistan has over 100 atomic bombs.

I would like to think that any lib who gets near a nuclear weapon even today encounters a high risk of getting shot. Was never directly responsible for it but near enough to conclude that nuclear weapons security is one thing we still take very seriously.

#1 Wow! Just wow! That was a frightening time for Americans, those long days Russian ships steamed toward Cuba to break the blockade. It's fascinating now to read about our always excellent military and what they were doing in the background. Your dad was in the thick of it. Thank him for me. I was away at college at the time and we were all very, very worried: mass and rosary every morning, crowded in front of the 6 o'clock news every night, many calls home for reassurance. You are right. We came right up to the edge.
