All 16 and 17 year
olds to have vote on
Scottish independence

Telegraph [UK], by Patrick Hennessy

Scotland’s First Minister unveiled the plan at his party’s annual conference in Perth. Although he struck a deal with David Cameron last week to allow all over-16s to vote, there was confusion as to how many would actually be able to cast their ballots because most 16-year-olds are not listed on the current electoral register. Mr Salmond’s move will mean complex changes to the registering process. Most Tory MPs in England do not want 16 and 17 year olds to have a vote in the referendum, scheduled for autumn 2014, because they believe it would then be impossible

Age is not the best measure of judgement.
Make the voter prove that he or she has spawned. That should increase the responsible population, especially in sections of Glasgow.

That the opinions of teenagers about important national issues(or, really, anything else) should be registered and regarded with respect is an act of deliberate self-mystification that is perhaps without parallel in human history. It is the reductio ad absurdum of the idea of democracy - and it is the manifestation of a confusion so deep as to cast a shadow on the future of the West itself.

Agree #2 - they and we have decided a foundation of sand (uneducated concepts of fairness & equality and the elevation of feelings over reason) trumps stone (personal responsibility and logic founded on reproducible observations). The first ill wind will blow both Scotland and the West in general no good. Those in waiting will know it is their time to reacquaint the world to a reality that fools thought they could ignore with immunity. The wolves are gathering for feeding time while their prey thinks they are safe behind walls (institutions) they have destroyed.

If they are old enough to vote, the kids will ask for all the other "adult" freedoms.

And I bet they have a ton of barristers willing to work on it.

Working gun made with 3D printer

The world´s first gun made with 3D printer technology has been successfully fired in the US. The controversial group which created the firearm, Defense Distributed, plans to make the blueprints available online. The group has spent a year trying to create the firearm, which was successfully tested on Saturday at a firing range south of Austin, Texas. Anti-gun campaigners have criticised the project. Europe´s law enforcement agency said it was monitoring developments. Victoria Baines, from Europol´s cybercrime centre, said that at present criminals were more likely to pursue traditional routes to obtain firearms. She added, however: "But as time goes

Charles Moore reviews Edmund Burke by Jesse Norman (William Collins). Since politics is, inevitably, a rough old trade, its theorists are often uneasy practitioners. The intellectual in politics finds it much harder than most to admit that he seeks fame, office and power: he cannot be content unless he also feels he is in the right. This greatly annoys his colleagues. The self-righteousness can be unbearable. As someone said of Gladstone: "I don’t mind it when he has the ace of clubs up his sleeve; but I wish he wouldn’t pretend that the Almighty put it there." Edmund Burke

Prince Harry has already announced he will try to ski to the South Pole later this year with four amputees raising money for the Walking With The Wounded charity, of which he is patron, and later this week he will spend two days cheering on a British team at the Warrior Games, a Paralympics-style event in the US for members of the Armed Forces. The two aerial strikes on Damascus in the past 48 hours, carried out by the Israel Air Force according to foreign media reports, are likely the result of classified intelligence indicating an imminent attempt to transfer strategic weapons from Syria to Hezbollah. With Hezbollah deploying up to half of its fighting force to Syria to help the regime of dictator Bashar Assad fight for its survival, the Lebanese Shi’ite organization will be seeking “rewards” for its actions. Hezbollah and its patron Iran may have asked Assad to make the advanced weapons available. It would seem that Assad cannot have been

Israel decided Sunday afternoon to close its airspace in the North to civilian air traffic following alleged Israeli air strikes on Syria in the past 48 hours. Israeli airline Arkia stated that "due to IDF instructions on the closure of airspace in the North until May 9, Arkia is forced to announce the cancellation of interior flights from Haifa to Eilat." The closure of Israel´s airspace in the North came after the IDF deployed two Iron Dome batteries in northern cities due to tensions with Syria following the alleged IAF air strikes. Confirmation that Israeli warplanes have carried out a series of air strikes in Syria against consignments of missiles being shipped to Hizbollah in southern Lebanon has highlighted Iran´s attempts to reinforce its regional allies in anticipation of military conflict with Israel. As I revealed last month, recent intelligence reports indicate that Iran has revived its efforts to ship weapons to the radical Hamas movement in Gaza. Following negotiations between members of the Quds force from Iran´s Revolutionary Guards, Sudanese government officials and Hamas leaders earlier this year, Iran has chartered a number of Boeing 747 cargo planes to smuggle weapons

A new poll from Emily’s List shows an overwhelming number of voters now support the idea. It’s a movement the group hopes someone in the sisterhood is about to inherit. With polls showing Hillary Clinton holding a formidable lead over all other potential candidates for president in 2016, a press conference to promote the idea of a woman president seems a little behind the news, a treasured dream catching up with a new reality, or perhaps a stalking horse for Clinton.

Damaging new revelations continue to undermine the Obama administration as Congress prepares to resume hearings examining the response to the September 11, 2012, attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead including the U.S. ambassador. There are new details that administration officials misled the public in its initial public assessments of the attack, withheld relevant information that may have been politically damaging, waged “subtle intimidation” campaigns against multiple government employees who sought to testify about the attack, and neglected evidence in its own internal investigation of the attack and its aftermath.

About 30 minutes into my job as a picker, the strawberry fairy left her first gift. On one of the beds of berries that seemed to stretch forever into the Santa Maria marine layer, Elvia Lopez had laid a little bundle of picked fruit. She and the other three dozen Mexican immigrants in the field were bent at an almost 90-degree angle, using two hands to pack strawberries into plastic containers that they pushed along on ungainly one-wheeled carts. They moved forward, relentlessly, ever bent, following a hulking machine with a conveyor belt that spirited away their fruit.
