| PHILADELPHIA— A survey of about 1,100 Americans finds that more than 4-in-10 respondents admit they don’t have more than $500 in readily accessible savings. The survey is a kind of departure for CreditDonkey.com, a website that compares credit card deals. Not respondents all were poor. Some had big houses, big mortgages or 401(k)s, but still no more than five Benjamins to rub together right now. Jill Michal, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, reacts to the lack of liquid assets.

Appalling. Pay yourself first. Live within your means.
For me, that goes with: Have extra ammo and emergency food.

I have lots of savings. I was married to a man who spent everything and then some. It scarred me. I can't stand to be in debt.

Which means they have no savings at all.
Subtract those under 20 who traditionally save very little and single illegal immigrants who send every spare dollar home to help others. Thus adjusted, maybe only 20% are totally broke adults.
And Obama's administration will announce it is 2% just before the election, why quibble about a decimal point.

For more years then I care to remember, I have told my children, and others that the key to financial freedom is two sentences which total seven words----refer to poster #1!
Additionally, I highly recommend a book titled "The millionaire next door", (authored by two men whose names elude me)
While it bog's down in parts with details, it is a superb guide to simple common sense, and financial piece of mind!

I couldn't determine from this article if they counted 401k's as a liquid asset. I normally have a few thousand bank savings on hand, but rely on my 401k as a backup. My plan allows me to borrow up to 50K and loans are processed within a week. For me that's a liquid asset. Lots of comments after the article blaming the administration and the economy for thier lack of savings, but if your not taking advantage of a company matched 401k, your pretty dumb.

I HAD savings but I ran through them all during my 1+ year of unemployment. I had to live on something and unemployment wasn't enough to cover my bills. Now I have to rebuild my nest egg at 48 and hope I have enough. And that's hoping I keep my job.

If I ever got down to that level of liquid assets, I would not be able to sleep. And, being sleepless, I would go out and find a job at an all night burger joint and earn extra dough to put into savings. But, thanks be to God, I learned frugality at an early age. And, I was raised on a ranch, so I know how to feed myself.

Shocking really, I was taught like those above, live within your means and save, save save!!! since I married I have not worked outside the home much just a few years here and there. I have no retirement or SS so I saved money myself each month for my own retirement. I have money saved and don't have to rely on pensions that might not be there and SS which probably won't be there either. So many called me stupid for not working for the benefits, yea I don't look so stupid now!!!

The best compliment our very liberal kids gave us was that we taught them the value of money. When my son wanted a Nintendo in the 80's, we made him pay for it himself from allowance and birthday money. Our daughter chose a college that gave merit scholarships, not just need based scholarships. She graduated with no debt.
Now if we can just fix the liberal part...

The reason that most of them don't have more savings is that they never learned to prioritize their spending nor live a little under their means so they could save.
I have no sympathy for those who seem to have enough money for all the goodies like cell phones, cable TV, Xbox sets, drugs & alcohol, manicures & salon hairdos, fancy duds, expensive cars and vacations, but not enough to pay their rent, buy food, afford health insurance, take care of monthly credit card bills, etc.
Their priorities are backward and that's not my problem. I resent having my taxes go to such spendthrifts and neer-do-wells.

Following Tuesday´s special election victory, Democrat Robin Kelly will start a new job in Congress as the least senior member of a House dominated by Republicans. That political reality is not lost on Kelly, who said her first task is to restore district offices and concentrate on constituent services as she replaces disgraced former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in the South Side and south suburban 2nd Congressional District. "Yes, we´ve seen some tough times and some setbacks. I know for some of you, your faith in your leaders is a little shaken,"

Actually, she is backing off. Here’s the thing about her now-famous MSNBC promo: Either she’s saying something radical or she’s saying something so banal that it’s barely even worth saying. The radical interpretation is that she thinks parents should have less say over how their children are raised and that “communities” should have a larger role. The very, very banal interpretation is that she thinks communities should do more to improve children’s lives and that thinking of them as “our children” might help forge that mentality. The money line in the promo that pointed to the radical interpretation

Richard Pollack at the Washington Examiner reports on a painless way to handle sequester costs -- cut out the unnecessary duplicative federal programs: Duplicative drug abuse and treatment services are strewn over 76 federal programs. Housing services are spread across 20 different agencies. Renewable energy projects go through 23 federal agencies and 130 sub-agencies. Even federal catfish inspections are done by three different agencies. These are only a few of 162 examples identified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog agency, of fragmented, duplicative federal programs and services.

President Obama’s meeting with a dozen Senate Republicans on Wednesday will be at the White House. It’s the second meeting Obama has had with Senate Republicans — and one with different optics that his first meeting, which took place at the opulent Jefferson Hotel. The White House said Obama picked up the dinner tab and paid for it with his own money. Earlier on Tuesday, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus suggested the second dinner not be at an expensive restaurant. “Instead of eating out as the president and senators did last month, I suggest they eat in,”

The exceedingly messy lawsuit between Arthur “Terry” Newmyer and Sidwell Friends School is headed for trial—and the circle of high-profile Washingtonians wrapped up in the case is expanding. At a hearing last week, DC Superior Court judge Michael Rankin set a trial date of November 18, 2013. Newmyer first filed suit against Sidwell and its former psychologist in May 2011. He claims the psychologist had an affair with his wife while treating his daughter, then five, and that Sidwell took “flagrant and outrageous actions” that allowed the “open sexual relationship.” For Sidwell—an elite private school in DC

WASHINGTON- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says he wants U.S. military law changed so senior commanders can´t overturn courts-martial verdicts in major crimes such as rape. Hagel said the Pentagon´s top lawyers would prepare legislation for Congress that would strip commanders´ power to toss out convictions, "except for certain minor offenses that would not ordinarily warrant trial by court-martial." Convicted defendants still would be able to appeal their cases. But in a move berated by advocacy groups for military sexual-assault victims, Hagel also said he would recommend commanders retain the power to alter courts-martial sentences,

If presidential politics ever involved time travel, President Obama might be in a little trouble. If an election between Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama were held today, 58% would vote for Reagan over Obama, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans age 18 and older conducted by Kelton Research for the National Geographic Channel. Though when the field is narrowed to people ages 18-34 -- those either too young to have known Reagan as president or too young to remember much -- the gap shrinks to 51% in favor of Reagan.

With all due respect to Mother Jones´s conversation-leaker-in-chief David Corn, the recordings published today of a conversation between Sen. Mitch McConnell and some consultants disparaging Ashley Judd is not news. It´s the sausage being made. We´ve got full background here, but the toplines are this: Corn got hold of a conversation apparently recorded during a presentation by consultants to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell´s reelection campaign. The consultants were opposition researchers, hired by the campaign to ferret out damaging information about actress Ashley Judd, who at one point considered running against McConnell.

As he continues guiding the Senate toward eventual consideration of proposals to curb gun violence, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) invoked his father’s suicide Tuesday as he once again pleaded with Republicans not to block legislation under consideration. During his morning remarks on the Senate floor, Reid recalled receiving a 12-gauge shotgun ordered from a Sears catalog for his 12th birthday and made reference to incidents of gun violence in his home state of Nevada, including the 2010 shooting at a Las Vegas federal building. He also noted that as a young state legislator, he sponsored a bill

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Information detailing what happened before, during and Headline corrected.
