State Fair of Texas icon Big Tex goes up in flames

| A fire destroyed Big Tex this morning at the State Fair of Texas. The blaze was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds in Dallas. “It’s a very sad day for all fair-goers,” fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding said. “We did lose the clothes, his hat and head,” she said. Allen Ferrell, who was visiting the fair with a church group from North Richland Hills, said the fire was short-lived. “Big Tex was done in about 10 minutes,” he said. Gooding said smoke was first seen coming from Big Tex’s neck, and she suspects the fire was electrical in nature.
|
Comments: So many memories went up in those flames. How many Texas L-Dotters made arrangements to "meet under Big Tex" and how many of us Fairgoers have heard that booming voice over the years.

Sooner terrorists struck last Saturday and Mack Brown is still in hiding. It's sad but at least they saved the frame and can rebuild.

Rest easy Texans. Here in Las Vegas, large signs and other iconic things routinely get new lives, so it most certainly will happen for Big Tex as well. The 21st century version will be more high-tech and a delight to all.

BOSTON – The uncle of the two men suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings says they had lived together in Cambridge for about a decade. WBZ-TV spoke with the suspects’ uncle, Ruslan Tsarni. Tsarni says Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev immigrated to the United States around 2000 or 2001, and have lived at the same Cambridge address since that time. According to Tsarni, Dzhokar completed high school in Cambridge and was attending college somewhere outside of Boston. Tsarni, who says he hasn’t been in touch with the brothers since around 2009, tells WBZ-TV he believes that the brothers’ parents

WEST -- They are farmers, car salesmen, business owners and city employees. But when flames broke out at the West Fertilizer Co. on Wednesday night, West volunteer firefighters and others left those jobs behind and rushed toward the danger blazing on the north end of town. Those at ground zero of the thundering explosion never came home. Grief and worry were etched on the faces of the men, women and children who gathered Thursday at the West Fire Station, desperately seeking information on the whereabouts of their loved ones. While officials have backed off their estimate

Not long ago, a local TV station promoted itself as the "Spirit of Texas." Commercials showed Texans of all ages and colors. They danced together, shared thrills and celebrated life´s joys. It looked just like West. Of all Texas´ iconic small towns, I don´t know another that is such a crossroad for Texans. We meet on the polka dance floor at the annual Westfest, or for kolaches at Gerik´s or the Czech Stop. Smack dab between Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and College Station, West draws guests and energy from all three, but remains loyal to century-old traditions of Moravian immigrants who came seeking freedom.

Former Justice of the Peace Eric Lyle Williams was charged Thursday with capital murder in what authorities have described as a revenge plot to kill the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife and a top assistant. Authorities say Williams, 46, gunned down Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse as he walked to the courthouse on Jan. 31, and killed District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, in their home over Easter weekend. And an arrest warrant affidavit says he was behind an email sent to the authorities confessing to the slayings and threatening future attacks. “The death penalty is a viable option,”

Miraculously the border between Mexico and Arizona has suddenly been declared substantially free of illegal crossers. Having announced last year that more illegal entrants had been caught and deported, the Department of Homeland Security recently has noted that the illegal immigration that previously had been such a problem for Arizona was now far reduced. Without questioning the actual statistics — which certainly could be done — the real issue is the political implication of these claims for the currently contemplated immigrant legalization programs. Supporters of the several proposals under consideration tend to agree that serious indications that border security

As I noted earlier, yesterday’s Senate votes on the Manchin-Toomey amendment as well as other provisions ended the chances that any gun control legislation will pass Congress this year. While Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and California Senator Dianne Feinstein have vowed to keep pushing for assault weapon bans and other proposals that have zero chance of passage, from this point forward the debate will be conducted solely with an eye toward public opinion and next year’s midterm election, not any specific legislation. That means that while some may dismiss yesterday’s bitter post-vote comments

The Gang of Eight’s “comprehensive” immigration-reform bill contains a number of superficially attractive security mandates: It would require the federal government to have 100 percent “situational awareness” of the border, to catch 90 percent of illegal border-crossers in high-traffic areas, to establish a tracking system to address the problem of those who enter the country illegally but overstay their visas, etc. So attractive are those goals that we have supported them in the past, on the many occasions upon which the government has promised to achieve them. Disappointingly, Washington keeps failing to deliver on its promises.

House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., signaled today that he will schedule a lengthier process for the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform proposal than the Senate intends provide. “Since the Senate bill is so large and the issue so complex, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on this legislation soon to consider its merits and flaws,” Goodlatte said in a statement today. “One way to do this is for the House to examine these issues in a step-by-step process. The House Judiciary Committee continues to hold hearings on immigration and is receiving input

London Mills, Illinois is being evacuated after flooding turned from bad to worse on Thursday. No, we´re not talking about a few blocks of the town. Police are ordering the entire town out their homes. London Mills is not a big town — it´s actually more of a village with a population of 390 — but the prospect of the entire community being swept away by floodwaters is just another extraordinary disaster in an extraordinarily disastrous week. The weather situation in Illinois isn´t isolated to London Mills. Heavy rains across the state have been causing problems all day as streams

A distasteful aspect of President Obama’s personality reared its head Wednesday, providing insight into why bipartisan success so often eludes him. Surrounded by family members of the Newtown victims, Obama charged that his foes had “willfully lied” to block “common-sense gun reform.” In truth, the Manchin-Toomey amendment didn’t pass because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, fearful that a GOP amendment relaxing concealed-carry laws might pass, insisted that all amendments would need 60 votes. The background check Obama railed about mustered but 54. Earlier this year, the president argued that Newtown survivors and other victims

After extracting only the most minimal tax hike from Republicans, crying wolf and losing on the sequester and then getting smacked down on anti-gun legislation you, can understand how Democrats may be a little down in the dumps. Well, here are some more worries for them to ponder: 1. Complaining about and name-calling the “shameful” senators who opposed the background checks on guns depresses turnout and fundraising, leading to losses in red state races critical for Democrats to hold the Senate in 2014. 2. Obamacare really is a “train wreck,” causing its delay (another downer for the left)

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

President Obama angrily blamed the defeat Wednesday of his centerpiece gun-control proposal on lies spread by the National Rifle Association, calling it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.” “The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Mr. Obama said in the White House rose garden about 90 minutes after the vote. “It came down to politics.” As he spoke, Mr. Obama was surrounded by family members of victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Also with him was former Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona, wounded in an assassination attempt.

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

Mark Kelly, the astronaut husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on Thursday upbraided senators who voted against gun legislation by saying they voted “out of fear.” ”If that vote had been a secret ballot, I bet you it would have passed with 80 votes,” Kelly told reporters. He was referencing the compromise authored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to expand background checks for gun buyers. It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

After all the controversy – it was too much, and too expensive; it would be marred by protests – this morning’s funeral for Lady Thatcher in London was a splendid and memorable affair, which did her memory, and her country, proud. It was a moving, dignified and pitch-perfect occasion: unmistakably British, and a fitting send-off for the country’s greatest post-war prime minister. Washington — President Barack Obama says the Senate’s opposition to a bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers marks a “shameful day” in Washington. He says a minority of senators decided “it wasn’t worth it” to protect the nation’s children. Obama spoke in the Rose Garden shortly after the Senate vote rejecting a bipartisan effort to expand federal background checks to more firearms buyers. (Snip) The president pinned the blame for the measures failure, though five Democrats also opposed the plan. He also said the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied” about background check bill.

Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday’s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon. The anxiety stemming from the attack and the stream of inaccurate news about it is further freighted, moreover, by the FBI’s confirmation that two letters addressed to top political officials — President Obama and Senator Richard Wicker (R., MS) — tested positive for ricin, a deadly poison. As noted below, a man identified as Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo, Mississippi, has reportedly been arrested in connection with the mailings. Early this afternoon, massive confusion

WASHINGTON -- A senior Democratic senator who helped write President Barack Obama´s health care law stunned administration officials Wednesday, saying openly he thinks it´s headed for a "train wreck" because of bumbling implementation. "I just see a huge train wreck coming down," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., told Obama´s health care chief during a routine budget hearing that suddenly turned tense. Baucus is the first top Democrat to publicly voice fears about the rollout of the new health care law, designed to bring coverage to some 30 million uninsured Americans through a mix
