Bob Beckel: If Gallup numbers are correct, ‘It’s over’

| Thursday’s Gallup tracking poll giving Republican nominee Mitt Romney a seven-point lead over President Barack Obama sent shock waves throughout the political world. It also may have dampened the outlook of a few Democrats just weeks before the presidential election. On Fox News Channel’s “The Five” on Thursday, Bob Beckel, the show’s lone liberal, said the election is over if the poll is accurate. “If I were looking at the numbers and managing the campaign, I would be upset,” Beckel said. “I’m not sure panic. But if the numbers are correct, it’s over. It is over.

Comments: Includes video. Even Beckel is seeing the handwriting on the wall, albeit through a haze of adult beverages.

I agree with #4. Most of us thought Gallup was wrong in the recent past, there's no reason to be complacent now. I'll be happy if Romney takes 60% of the vote, and I urge my fellow Ldotters to work as though we're down by 7.

Ok. Agree that overconfidence should be avoided. However, it's a stretch to suggest BB is sucking us in. This is exactly what Rove has been saying for 10 days. If candidate is at or above 50 in Gallup they've never lost. So, BB is echoing the cold hard facts. Romney will win. The Won has no clothes.

As we saw last Tuesday, the president has the press on his side.
He also has the cool people. He has Tinseltown. He has registered felons. He has the whole decrepit league of mushheaded, addled youth. He has the professoriate, in spades.
You can bet he has oodles of support from the inhabitants of America's finest cemeteries, if his party's historical proclivities are anything to go by.
He has made piles of promises. He has promised insurance to every 26-year old mooch-basket still residing in a parent's basement. He has promised free birth control to the fairer sex. If ten-year olds could vote, he would promise them free ice-cream sandwiches (although some pint-sizers have more integrity than Dem pols, and would refuse).
This election is not over. It was not over when every spazoid, well-coiffed professional yakker on the networks said Mitt Romney was a walking, talking electoral fruitcake. It is not over now.
Repeat after me: "This election is not over." That may feel awkward. But it's the truth. So the question is: When the election IS over, what side will you have been on? Can the Good Guys count on your support?

What a stupid campaign Obama waged. Maybe the only strategy he had, but nevertheless, stupid...
Create a Gordon Gecko Romney, an out of touch man, a destroyer of companies and lives, an insensitive man, a bad man. A man for the one percent, etc., etc., etc.
LOL, All Romney ever had to do was to show up and not have a tail, which would have won him a narrow victory. But Romney did more than show up. With Romney's character, his record, his experience, his intelligence, his humanity, the victory may not be so narrow. I see a substantial popular vote victory. All that is left to see is how many states Obama managed to finagle with his enormous GOTV effort and cleverness. No time to let up, thought, because, one is now reminded of Hillary finally finding her voice in 2008, beating the pants off of Obama, state after state, all for naught, since Obama and his crew had already gamed out and executed a victory.

I can't believe an obvious liar who couldn't normally get FBI clearance to do anything, has been a President who decreed upteen numbers of unconstitutional laws without a majority for four long years, so I won't believe he is gone from executive power until he is flying away. Even then his stain will linger for decades as better people try and undo the damage. DO NOT count your chickens before they hatch.

For a change Big Bob is right. No president has ever come back from a 7 pt Gallup deficet with only 18 days to go. Pres Bush had a 5 point lead at this point and still won by 2 points which suggests that Mitt will win by 4 which means he carries OH,MI and NH. Obama's hope may be to emulate Grover Cleveland and get elected after being out of office for 4 years. He may also end up as Hillary's VP running mate in 2016.

Loved Romney's jokes at the Al Smith Dinner. Awesome! Obama was as bad as at his first debate. Not funny at all.

Just remember that it isn't over when the last vote is cast...it's over when the counting is forced to stop.
Will they "find" several boxes full of 0bama votes in peoples car trunks because Romney pulls ahead?? (Just like Al Franken)
Will they have targeted lawsuits in specific jurisdictions where they think they can "find" "uncounted" Democratic "votes", not by legally recounting a whole state, but by unconstitutionally changing the rules after the election is over?? (Just like Al Gore...who still claims Bush "stole" his election)
Will the create new ways to cheat, add to their count and discredit their opponent's count, disavow the military's right to vote, or even cancel the election that looks like they will lose??

And there's a variance every time they do a recount. Don't forget the Washington State governor's race where they recounted until Gregoire won, and then stopped.

Whether Mitt Romney becomes the 45th president or not, Politico's Jonathan Martin insists that the Republican Party is on the verge of a looming crisis. Sticking with the same overgeneralized racist narrative, it is basically a 'fact' at this point that the GOP's conservative ideology and a lack of diversity will ultimately lead to its downfall. Conversely, the Democratic Party is poised to dominate in future elections. Nevermind that we heard this before in 2006 and 2008, with Clinton acolyte James Carville forecasted 40 years in the wilderness for the GOP. No, Martin insists that demography is destiny,

President Obama’s big rally tonight turned out to be just like his first, opening salvo of the 2012 campaign: a half-empty arena in Ohio. According toRealClearPolitics’ Scott Conroy, there were “empty seats scattered around the upper-level of Nationwide Arena … Four years ago, after all, Obama was easily filling venues larger than that …” The event even featured Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z, and Obama still couldn’t fill it out. As it turns out, the empty seats didn’t look exactly “scattered.” They looked like substantial portions of the upper bowl of the arena, according to photos tweeted by those in attendance:

Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday struggled to draw 1,000 people at two campaign events in Colorado, one of the most important swing states this election. Republicans in Colorado have said they have not seen this much enthusiasm for the top of a Republican ticket in a decade, which is a contrast from Democrats, who are seeing a diminished level of enthusiasm from 2008. At an event in Englewood, Colorado, Biden's crowd "fell just short of a thousand people"--while an event with Romney drew 18,000--and another Biden event drew 1,200 in Pueblo, Colorado.

Today, speaking in Concord, New Hampshire, trying to look bipartisan, Barack Obama made this incredible statement: “As long as I’m president, I’ll work with anybody.” He can’t be serious. For a start, let’s take a look at immigration reform. In June of this year, Sen. John McCain, who has always championed bipartisanship, said bitterly: “This idea that this president or his people reached out to me is patently false. To somehow allege that I didn’t somehow respond to their overtures, that’s patently false. That’s their narrative, and I understand their narrative, but it’s not substantiated by the facts.”

The Illinois Republican party claims early and absentee voting has precipitously fallen since the 2008 presidential election. According to the numbers, at this point in 2008, there were 260,376 early voters and 304,290 absentee voters. Now, the party maintains, there are 195,064 early voters and 46,232 absentee voters. That's a loss of 57 percent of voters, since the last election. This, the Illinois Republican party says, is a terrible sign for Democrats. "Chicago is the heart and soul of the Democratic Party," says Illinois Republican party chair Pat Brady. "You can't get much more solid blue than Chicago

On this weekend’s broadcast of “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on ABC, Will revealed his prediction and added a bonus surprise by saying traditional Democratic state Minnesota would go for Romney as well. “I’m projecting Minnesota to go for Romney,” Will said. “It’s the only state that’s voted democratic in nine consecutive elections, but this year, there’s marriage amendment on the ballot that will bring out the evangelicals and I think could make the difference.”

David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, dismissed on Sunday the notion that Mitt Romney is making Pennsylvania competitive as the GOP presidential nominee heads there later in the day. "They understand that they're in deep trouble," Axelrod said on "Fox News Sunday." "They've tried to expand the map because they know in states like Ohio… they're behind and they're not catching up at this point." Axelrod argued that Romney's trips to Florida and Virginia are signs that they haven't locked up states where the Republican should be performing well.

Romney takes 46 percent of the vote to Obama's 45 percent in the poll, which was conducted by the GOP firm NMB Research and shared with POLITICO. The Republican presidential nominee is up 13 points among independents, ahead of Obama 49 percent to 36 percent. They survey breaks with recent public data, which has shown Obama maintaining a single-digit edge over Romney, but gives Republicans reason to hope

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Chelsea Clinton has raised her profile in the last few days, which sparked the inevitable question about the former first daughter´s future: Will she ever be like Mom and Dad and run for office? Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered.
