Atheist group gives Obama an unenthusiastic nod over Romney

| There's been a lot of talk about where faith-based groups stand on the issues and the candidates in the presidential campaign, but not so much about the faithless. Now the Secular Coalition for America, an advocacy group for atheists, has issued a report card on the candidates that knocks both major party candidates for injecting religion into politics, but expresses a clear preference for President Obama over Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Romney gets a grade of F overall for stated positions that advocate a lowering of the wall between church and state

Comments: Atheists should be celebrating. If these misinformed malcontents live to be 100, they will NEVER see another U.S. president who shares their deophobic "beliefs" more than the slug occupying the White House right now.

“This score card shows that our current politicians still have a long way to go in protecting the secular values that America was founded on,” said Edwina Rogers, executive director of the Secular Coalition. This quote is TOTALLY wrong. Our forefathers were strongly religious men and based everything on their beliefs.

President Obama warned Monday that the United States could lose years in the race for scientific innovation because of Republicans´ fixation on cutting spending, including investments in scientific research. "Right now, we´re on the brink of amazing breakthroughs that have the chance, the potential to change life for the better, which is why we can’t afford to gut these investments in science and technology," he said. "Unfortunately, that’s what we´re facing right now because of the across-the-board cuts that Congress put in place -- the sequester as it´s known in Washington-speak -- it´s hitting our scientific research.

Protest groups across the country are gearing up for May Day protests on Wednesday. In New York, Occupy Wall Street has posted a schedule for the day, kicking off with young workers marching from Bryant Park in solidarity with the Transport Workers Union. Occupy says it plans to visit the offices of union busters and companies with whom the TWU members have contract disputes. At around noon, protesters will then go on an "immigrant worker justice tour," in order to highlight the daily struggles facing immigrants and workers in New York City.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) won´t run for president in 2016 if former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton runs, sources have told the New York Post. A "Cuomo administration insider with direct knowledge of the situation" told the Post that Cuomo believes if Clinton runs, she´ll receive strong support, leaving him no path to the Democratic nomination. “The governor has told people in recent weeks that there’s not a chance for him to run if Hillary gets in the race because she’ll easily wrap up the Democratic nomination," the insider said.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has its roots in the October 27, 1993 conference at a Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia that was attended by 25 supporters and members of Hamas. The 1993 conference had as its purpose the subversion of the Oslo Accords. Israel had to be destroyed, not accommodated. Among those in attendance was Nihad Awad. The FBI monitored and recorded the meeting. The evidence derived from the meeting played a key role in the (successful) prosecution of the Holy Land

Hundreds of employees from stores such as McDonald´s Corp., Macy´s Inc. and Victoria´s Secret walked off the job today in Chicago for higher wages, three weeks after a similar strike by fast-food workers in New York. The employees marched in the Chicago Loop and near the Magnificent Mile shopping area, calling for $15-an-hour pay, 82 percent more than the state´s minimum wage, and the right to form a union without intimidation. The one-day strike was arranged by the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago, a group of retail and food workers, according to a statement yesterday.

Today Shepard Fairey will be distributing copies of his latest work to protesters in Washington D.C. who are marching on the offices for the lobbyists for the National Rifle Association (NRA). A bullet point on Page 18 of President Barack Obama’s 2014 budget sounds ominous: “Prohibit Individuals from Accumulating Over $3 Million in Tax-Preferred Retirement Accounts.” That it appears in a section titled “Strengthening the Middle Class” is odd since such a proposal would seem to undermine the goal. Why, at a time when the government is looking to reform entitlement programs because it can’t keep the promises it has made to future generations, does Obama want to reduce the incentive to save? It makes no sense. Suddenly, the political agenda becomes obvious.

The latest victims of the sequester? The Boston bombing suspect’s lawyers. The Massachusetts public defender’s office, like other federal public defender offices around the country, was already facing furloughs because of the sequester. And that was before the Massachusetts office took on the biggest case in the country: the defense of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspect who has been charged in connection with the Boston Marathon attacks. Three weeks ago, Miriam Conrad, who heads the office, told the Boston Globe her staff was facing 16 and a half furlough days because of the automatic sequester cuts –

DALLAS — President Obama has left little mystery about how he views his predecessor. “The failed policies of George W. Bush” wiped away a budget surplus and “squandered the legacy” of bipartisan foreign policy. Mr. Bush put two wars “on a credit card,” led the country away “from our values” and “crashed the economy.” But Mr. Obama will surely say none of that when he helps dedicate the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday. Addressing a crowd of Bush supporters and administration veterans, the 44th president will no doubt extoll the virtues of the 43rd president

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Senate is calling for drug testing of welfare recipients with a history of using illegal drugs. The Republican leader of the Senate, Del Marsh of Anniston, moved to pass a drug testing bill immediately after the Senate convened at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Most of the Republican senators and all of the Democrats had not yet entered the chamber. Marsh asked to have the bill passed using the roll call from a previously passed bill. No one objected, and the bill automatically passed 22-10. Democrats opposed to the bill rushed to the chamber to complain

The State Department on Monday defended its decision not to have lower-level employees testify before Congress about last year´s attack in Benghazi, Libya. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is pushing ahead with his investigation of the terrorist assault, and has asked for legal protections for lower-level employees who might be called to testify. The State Department pushed back on Monday and said the independent probe into the attack "should be enough" for lawmakers. “We think that we´ve done an independent investigation, that it´s been transparent, thorough, credible, and detailed, and that we´ve shared those

It is a shopworn technique of hard-line conservatives to declare themselves men and women of principle in contrast to those other Republicans — the ones, you know, who pass legislation and try to represent their constituents. It is both self-serving (presuming principles are of no matter to opponents) and lazy in that it is always easy to say no, ridicule compromise and remain pristine rather than trying to improve legislation or introduce an alternative. I’m sorry to say Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) is too often falling into the reflexive habit of voting no

Over five years after Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses and demolished the notion that white voters wouldn’t support a black presidential candidate, progress for other African-American politicians remains elusive. Even as the country elected and re-elected Obama, making it seem increasingly unremarkable to have a black family in the White House, African-Americans are scarce and bordering on extinct in the U.S. Senate and governorships. The president is indeed exceptional - but in the wrong sense of the phrase as it applies to other black politicians. Consider what has taken place, or not taken place,

The Tsarnaev family, including the suspected terrorists and their parents, benefited from more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded assistance — a bonanza ranging from cash and food stamps to Section 8 housing from 2002 to 2012, the Herald has learned. “The breadth of the benefits the family was receiving was stunning,” said a person with knowledge of documents handed over to a legislative committee today. The state has handed over more than 500 documents to the 11-member House Post Audit and Oversight Committee, which today met for the first time and plans to call in officials from the Department of Transitional

Several House Democrats are calling on Congress to recognize that climate change is hurting women more than men, and could even drive poor women to "transactional sex" for survival. The resolution, from Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and a dozen other Democrats, says the results of climate change include drought and reduced agricultural output. It says these changes can be particularly harmful for women. "[F]ood insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,"

On his radio show today, Beck reflected on time he spent at Auschwitz and how the police going door to door to search for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect reminded him of how the Nazis searched for Jews during the Holocaust. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released its latest cosmetic and resconstructive surgery statistics on Monday. Many of the trends were familiar. In all, the group reported, Americans underwent 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries, including face-lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty; 13 million minimally invasive procedures (think Botox injections) and 5.6 million reconstructive procedures (including tumor removal and scar revision). People in the U.S. spent $11 billion on the cosmetic procedures alone. Once again, for the seventh year in a row, breast augmentation was the most popular form of cosmetic surgery, with 286,000 operations performed.
