When I was a professor/dean, I would not hire anyone with an on line degree, a U. of Phoenix degree, or a Nova degree. (Nova gives out about 10 percent of the doctorates in the U.S., and those other schools, which I consider illegitimate, give out a huge number of worthless degrees.
I watch Judge Judy, and she takes interesting cases, usually where the girl gets her financial aid, and buys the boy a cell phone, a car, etc. And just last week, a boy testified that he had 12,000 in financial aid from an on line 'school,' withdrew quickly, the on line 'school' kept 9000 dollars of his money, and sent him a check for the remaining 3000 dollars.
Judge Judy was not happy.
We have an enormous scandal associated with these schools. I hope president romney deals with it.

I think it's more a fact that people are finally realizing these diploma mills are worthless for anything except running up huge debts.

And that never happens with accredited schools?

University of Phoenix is just the tip of the iceberg. It's not about education, it's about the student loans. One school made the son take a loan for classes and the mother take another one for books.
Those loans cannot be wiped out in a bankruptcy.
I had a friend that taught at UP and they were always complaining about students being incapable of university level studies.

I have coworkers who teach at Phoenix, and without exception, they are slackers and BS artists and the last people you'd ask to do an important job.

These places are the cyber equivalent of matchbook schools. Among many other forms of chicanery they engage in is to list famous people--or at least people who are known and respected in their fields--as "faculty" members. These people have nothing to do with the school, and in most cases aren't even aware that their names are being exploited.

You can go to a good state university or college for a lot less money and get a legitimate degree--but you do have to pass the entrance requirements, which these online places don't have.

In the past year I have closely followed employment listings on Craigslist (no, not for myself). I have seen ads requiring one year of college...for a job scooping up dog poop in backyards. I have seen ads requiring two years of college...for a janitor.

People enroll in fly-by-night schools because idiots think that all jobs require college. They don't. We don't need more money going to colleges; we need to remember what college is supposed to be. Employers now seem to think people need a college education for manual labor. It is a huge waste of this country's resources.

#1 is quite correct. The only people that need degrees are the ruling elite. The rest of the rabble need only to know where to sign up for the cheese.

This should hassen the closing of the Washington Post. This was one of their higher education cash cows. Their not making money selling newspapers.

It's not just the low academic standards at the University of Phoenix--they don't even have a football team!

Hmmmm. Seems BS is the only constant of all WP businesses.

They may not have football team, but they have a hell of a football stadium in Glendale.
