Why are there no demonstrations in Paris against the violence in Syria? A friend who knows the French anti-war movement went on to supply an answer: because the French left is deeply divided between those who support the popular revolt and many others who see in the Syrian regime the last anti-imperialist Arab regime. This confusion is not limited to France. The same can be said about the anti-war movements in Britain or Australia (where in Sydney, as Syria's air-force and artillery was pounding the poor neighbourhoods of Aleppo, demonstrators demanded: "hands off Syria!"). This internal divide has little to do with what is happening in Syria or the region itself, and more to do with the left's own deep crisis of vision and theoretical clarity.

The Left is not anti-war but anti-West. Most of all it is anti-U.S. Leftism is the political equivalent of an autoimmune disease in which the body starts to attack itself. It is a disturbance in the minds of people who are in decline as a consequence of too much ease and comfort and who have too much time on their hands. Restless boredom and ennui lead to righteous indignation to rationalize the thirst for stimulation, novelty, uproar and anarchy. It is no accident that Leftism flourishes in universities and among the so-called intellectual and chattering classes, whose existential discontents serve to sublimate, refine and rationalize the greed, envy and malice of others as well as themselves. Leftists are not interested in war except when it can be represented to reflect badly on the West. The superficial cosmopolitanism of the Left is misleading, for Leftism is an intensely parochial ideology that is exclusively concerned with attacking the West. Everything and everybody else is merely a means to this end.

THE Korean Peninsula is closer to military conflict than at any time since 1994. Beyond his wild rhetoric threatening nuclear war, the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un, has taken two of the most extreme actions open to him. He has decided to re-start his five megawatt nuclear reactor at Yongbyon. And he has banned South Koreans from entering the joint industrial zone in Kaesong which is responsible for much of the hard currency Pyongyang gets.Meanwhile, he is provoking tough reactions in Washington and Seoul. The New York Times recently reported that China apparently has agreed to take over the operations of a $200 million port it built for Pakistan in Gwadar, on the Indian Ocean close to the Iranian border and close to the entrance to the Persian Gulf. We´ll see if this actually happens. If it does, it will be geopolitically significant. To a greater degree than other Indian Ocean ports that China has either built, helped finance or upgraded, Gwadar is plagued by considerable security problems, as I found out during a visit there in 2008. It is in a remote region of Pakistan affected by Baloch separatism. And Baloch leaders I interviewed specifically threatened the building of a Chinese pipeline from Gwadar.

In a fanciful interpretation of the constitution, however, the Supreme Court decided otherwise. Governance in the United States is at a standoff. The crisis over the federal budget has led many people around the world to wonder if Americans haven´t lost their minds. Ultimately, as Winston Churchill infamously observed, they may be counted on to do the right thing after exhausting all other options. But this hardly is sound policy with every new vote in Congress. Maybe the latest crisis is symptomatic of a deeper and even more serious problem. The future of the United States - and the American experiment - seems bleak. The optimism for which Americans are known comes less readily.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends.
