| Tom Brokaw had his Jimmy Carter moment on Tuesday. The veteran journalist appeared on MSNBC's The Cycle to call for Americans to accept a permanent lowering of their standard of living. Speaking of the next generation, Brokaw blithely insisted that "they probably won't have as much disposable income." He added, "They won't live in homes that are McMansions. We gotta get real." The former Nightly News anchor, estimated to be worth about $70 million, didn't seem to find this a bad thing: "It doesn't mean we can't have everything that we need." Brokaw lobbied for Americans to "get proportion."

Comments: And if you google "Tom Brokaw Montana ranch" you find that he has at least 2000 acre ranch in Montana.

Lefties love the idea of poverty and lower standards of living, as long as these standards are for everyone else, not them.
This has been going on for a long time. I remember back when I started working decades ago how Jane Fonda was blabbering about the "joy" of living on a hundred bucks a week. She waxed poetic from her own comfy quarters in pricey Santa Monica, where she lived with her hubby and kids. I can't imagine any of them wanted for anything material. I can't imagine a c-note would have gone very far in their family budget either, even in the late 1970s.

Brokaw is an elitist hypocrite. He's an open border guy which fits in predictably with his hypocrisy, as there is no doubt that any hunter or fisherman who stumbled into Brokaw's Montana property without permission would learn the meaning of borders probably at the point of a gun barrel. Speaking of guns, I'm sure Brokaw favors gun control for the little people.but not for him, of course.

President Obama´s decision last year to allow young people living in the U.S. illegally to stay and work marked the biggest shift in immigration policy in decades, hailed as a landmark step toward the American dream for a generation of immigrants. But months later, many immigrants are having vastly different reactions to the change depending on where they live, and they aren´t flocking to the program at the levels the government originally expected. A handful of Republican-led states are blocking basic benefits for those in the program, denying beneficiaries identification cards, driver´s licenses,

Work is starting on a project to stabilize the banks of the Santa Cruz River from Ajo Way to Silverlake Road. The river and surrounding parklands are home to regal horned lizards and other uncommon kinds of reptiles and toads. On Easter Sunday, Google is honoring the birthday of the late labor organizer Cesar Chavez by placing a Chavez portrait within the middle “o” of the Google logo that appears on the homepage of the popular search engine. While Google frequently decorates its logo to celebrate various holidays and special events, it is unclear why the company chose specifically to honor Chavez’s birthday, instead of Easter Sunday. Chavez co-founded the organization now known as the United Farm Workers union (UFW). He became an iconic figure in the labor movement, with his stature only increasing since his death

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
