| Without water, crops cannot grow and the world cannot eat. And this year, there hasn't been enough of it. The US has seen its worst drought in more than 50 years, vast swathes of Russia have been left parched by lack of rain, India has had a dry monsoon, while rainfall in South America early in the year fell well below expectations. As a direct result, harvests of many crops have been decimated, forcing the price of some cereals back up towards levels last seen four years ago, a time when high prices sparked riots in 12 countries across the world

Forget the rain of growth; look at the reign of stupidity among those nations who ignorantly refuse to grow their own. Today's view of the survival of the fittest. Let the dead bury their dead.

Wow! They really are getting desperate aren´t they? Though I had no intention of writing again about the absurdity of the anti-Ukip stories being circulated in the media, this one is too funny not to mention. For the full story you must visit my brother Dick´s blog post. But just have a look at the picture above and ask yourself: does this photograph look like compelling evidence of the Worcester Riverside Ukip candidate´s hidden Nazi sympathies? Or does it look, maybe, like someone taking the mickey? What pleases me about all this is the response of the Ukip high command.

The soldiers were killed while travelling in a Mastiff armoured patrol vehicle, once described by Prime Minister David Cameron as offering "the best-known protection" against bombs, after it was struck by an improvised explosive device in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. It is the first time British soldiers have been killed while travelling in a Mastiff armoured vehicle, the Ministry of Defence said today. The £1m Mastiff is widely used by the British Army in Afghanistan, with around 180 in service. It is favoured by troops because it is regarded as being highly resistant to mines and

Mark Sanford picked up an endorsement Tuesday from U.S. Sen. Rand Paul. Paul, a tea party favorite and potential 2016 presidential candidate, touted the former GOP governor’s fiscal conservatism. “More than anything, Washington needs strong and consistent voices for fiscal responsibility and liberty,” Paul, R-Ky., said. “Mark has proven during his time in office that watching out for taxpayers and holding the line on spending are his top priorities. What we absolutely cannot afford is someone like his opponent, who will be yet another vote for a return to the Pelosi speakership, for disastrous programs like Obamacare

US President Barack Obama has pledged a new push to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, amid a growing hunger strike among prisoners there. At the White House, Mr Obama said the detention centre was "contrary to who we are" and harmful to US interests. He cited recent convictions of terror suspects to argue the civilian justice system was adequate for such trials. Congress has blocked efforts to close the prison, but Mr Obama said he would renew discussions with lawmakers. "It is inefficient, it hurts us in terms of our international standing, it lessens co-operation with our allies

The al-Qaeda inspired Birmingham gang may have wanted to assassinate EDL leader Tommy Robinson, who had been due to speak at the event. The plot, last summer, only failed by sheer luck because the Jihadist group turned up too late and the rally had already finished. And they were only caught by another stroke of luck because an error by one of the terrorists when taking out car insurance led to one of their vehicles being stopped by a traffic officer as they returned home. Even then, the car, loaded with homemade bombs, weapons and a letter attacking the

It was also a reminder of how fantastically stupid and inept such terrorists can be. The race for Tim Scott’s former congressional seat finally turned to issues Monday, as Republican Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch met for the first--and probably only--time. [Snip] Sanford asked if Colbert Busch thought he was not a good congressman, why did she give him $500 when he later ran for governor. He said her criticism of those votes--which he said was rooted in what part of the budget the money was coming from--was political, adding, “I get that it bothers her now.” Mostly, Sanford linked her with House Democratic leaders, dozens of whom have helped raise money

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch squared off in a spirited debate Monday night in the race for the state´s vacant 1st Congressional District seat. Sanford, a Republican, stressed his efforts to rein in spending as a member of Congress and as a two-term governor. He noted that he turned back economic stimulus funds. Colbert Busch reminded Sanford that he used taxpayer funds to "leave the country for a personal purpose" - referring to the extramarital affair with an Argentine woman he had while governor. Colbert Busch cited her business experience Monday night and

US President Barack Obama has voiced concern to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about reports that Syria has used chemical weapons. In a phone conversation, the two leaders agreed to stay in touch on the issue, tasking their foreign ministers to hold further talks. The US earlier said it had "varying degrees of confidence" that chemical weapons had been used in Syria. The government in Damascus have denounced the claims as "lies". It is Syria’s misfortune that its torment at the hands of Bashar al-Assad and his murderous cronies had to come after the West’s ordeals in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in the wake of a global financial crisis that has left accountants in charge of foreign policy. Wearied and broke, we have no appetite for another military adventure. Our impotence in the face of daily horrors from Damascus, Homs, Deraa, Aleppo and countless other places martyred in the savagery of this civil war is obvious to the world.[Snip] Now we are reduced to wringing our hands on the sidelines

It may be her second wedding anniversary, but it was business as usual for the Duchess of Cambridge as she visited a children’s hospice today. Kate, 31, was without husband Prince William during the engagement at the Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire to mark Children’s Hospice Week. According to sources, William is on shift as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot in Anglesey on the anniversary of their Westminster Abbey wedding in 2011--which is normally celebrated with a gift of cotton. However it is believed the couple enjoyed a private weekend away in Norfolk to mark the occasion.

A striking set of figures was just released today by the independent Government Accountability Institute in Washington, analysing “how much time President Obama has spent in economic meetings of any kind, Presidential Daily Briefs (PDBs) and personal recreation (vacations and golf outings).” The Institute’s study covers the first 1,532 days of President Obama’s time in office, up until March 31, 2013. (hat tip: Drudge Report) Here are the main findings of the Government Accountability Institute’s report: • President Obama has spent 3.6 % of his total work time in economic meetings or briefings of any kind (assuming

The State Department on Monday defended its decision not to have lower-level employees testify before Congress about last year´s attack in Benghazi, Libya. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is pushing ahead with his investigation of the terrorist assault, and has asked for legal protections for lower-level employees who might be called to testify. The State Department pushed back on Monday and said the independent probe into the attack "should be enough" for lawmakers. “We think that we´ve done an independent investigation, that it´s been transparent, thorough, credible, and detailed, and that we´ve shared those

The Obama administration has insisted from the start that there was no help available for the Americans under assault in Benghazi on September 11. The first in three exclusive reports alleging that that claim is false aired on tonight’s Special Report. Because the special operator in the video above is fearful of reprisal, his identity was concealed. The man, who watched the events unfold and has debriefed those who were part of the response, told Fox News’ Adam Housley that the C110 special forces group “was doing a training exercise not in the region of Northern

It is a shopworn technique of hard-line conservatives to declare themselves men and women of principle in contrast to those other Republicans — the ones, you know, who pass legislation and try to represent their constituents. It is both self-serving (presuming principles are of no matter to opponents) and lazy in that it is always easy to say no, ridicule compromise and remain pristine rather than trying to improve legislation or introduce an alternative. I’m sorry to say Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) is too often falling into the reflexive habit of voting no

Defense lawyer Jack McMahon delivered his closing argument on behalf of abortionist Kermit Gosnell on Monday, accusing prosecutors of “manipulating” the case to engage in an essentially “racist” prosecution of the man charged with four counts of first-degree murder, killing babies born alive during abortions by snipping their spinal cords with surgical scissors. “Never have I seen the presumption of innocence so trampled on, stomped on,” said McMahon in court today, adding that the Philadelphia district attorney’s office “tried to manipulate everybody” and was pursuing an “elitist, racist prosecution.” “Dr. Gosnell is not the only one doing

The Tsarnaev family, including the suspected terrorists and their parents, benefited from more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded assistance — a bonanza ranging from cash and food stamps to Section 8 housing from 2002 to 2012, the Herald has learned. “The breadth of the benefits the family was receiving was stunning,” said a person with knowledge of documents handed over to a legislative committee today. The state has handed over more than 500 documents to the 11-member House Post Audit and Oversight Committee, which today met for the first time and plans to call in officials from the Department of Transitional

Several House Democrats are calling on Congress to recognize that climate change is hurting women more than men, and could even drive poor women to "transactional sex" for survival. The resolution, from Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and a dozen other Democrats, says the results of climate change include drought and reduced agricultural output. It says these changes can be particularly harmful for women. "[F]ood insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,"

“You can live in your little dream world.” That’s Glenn Beck‘s advice for anyone who didn’t see the similarities between the lockdown in Boston earlier this month and Nazi Germany. On his radio show today, Beck reflected on time he spent at Auschwitz and how the police going door to door to search for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect reminded him of how the Nazis searched for Jews during the Holocaust. The “frightening looking” photo that inspired Beck’s rant was originally posted on (where else?) Alex

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released its latest cosmetic and resconstructive surgery statistics on Monday. Many of the trends were familiar. In all, the group reported, Americans underwent 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries, including face-lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty; 13 million minimally invasive procedures (think Botox injections) and 5.6 million reconstructive procedures (including tumor removal and scar revision). People in the U.S. spent $11 billion on the cosmetic procedures alone. Once again, for the seventh year in a row, breast augmentation was the most popular form of cosmetic surgery, with 286,000 operations performed.
